AITB for suggesting to co-worker "There won't be a national lockdown, even if the website shows it"?
2023.03.26 10:16 Deep-Vykerinarian952 AITB for suggesting to co-worker "There won't be a national lockdown, even if the website shows it"?
My co-worker Robert, 48, told me (26M) that he's heard there will be a full-scale national lockdown covering all 50 states on April 17th 2023 and it will last for 6 weeks, ending 27 May 2023.
He then showed me a page at
www.ca.gov/covid-lockdown-april-2023 (now gone) and it said:
The U.S. will be entering a full national lockdown with a stay-at-home order from 17 April 2023 which will last for 6 weeks. During this time:
- You can only leave your home for shopping, medical appointments or buying medicine or fuel for your vehicle.
- You cannot leave your home state unless there is a legitimate reason.
- You MUST work from home unless you work in a job which is essential in nature or medical-related or it is not possible to do so and even then physical distancing must be observed.
- You cannot leave the U.S. for vacation purposes - a fine of $5,000 will be incurred if you leave the U.S. for this and return.
- You MUST wear a face covering/face mask when in shops or in doctors' surgeries.
- 6ft physical distancing must be observed at all times.
- All schools must close and learning take place remotely.
- All restaurants must close and food can only be served as take-out food.
- All gyms, swimming pools, entertainment facilities and cinemas must close for the duration of the lockdown.
- All non-essential retail must close for the duration of the lockdown.
- You must not meet up with anyone outside of your household or family for social purposes unless caring for a sick person.
- You cannot meet up with someone outside your household for the purposes of sexual relations.
- Funerals can take place, but only with 6 people outdoors and required people for the purposes of a funeral.
- All religious facilities must close for the duration of the lockdown.
- Police officers have the power to issue fines for breaches of these regulations.
- Fines of $1,500 for a first offence breaching these regulations will be issued for any breaches of these coronavirus regulations, with a maximum fine of $5,000 and 18 months in prison for a third offence.
- These new regulations apply to all 50 states.
- This only applies to all 50 states. In the U.S territories of U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam and the CNMI, they will have a variation of these.
He then showed me mirrored copies of this on Facebook and Instagram.
But if there really WAS such news about this, wouldn't it be all over national news and this site, as I CAN'T find anything on Google about it?
Robert ISN'T NORMALLY the type to believe in conspiracy theories, but do you think this sounds a bit conspiracy theory-ish?
AITB for suggesting to him there won't be a lockdown until there's actual evidence to prove it?

Randy Spelling, and Jed Allen's sons Mitch & Rick Brown are guest hosts.
Jed Allen is also discussed.
- Randy Spelling didn't grow up wanting to act. People would pinch his cheeks and say "you're cute, are you going to be an actor?" He would say "no, I want to be a reducer."
Then one day, he saw his father and sister get mobbed, when he was 15. People were excited just to hug them or shake their hands.
He saw how powerful that was, and decided he wanted that.
- Tori knew she wanted to act since she was 5.
- There's a deleted scene where Ryan hits on Donna, and says "you're hot".
- It depends on the context, but Randy liked working with Tori, in this instance.
- Ian Ziering ad-libbed "Too much blood in his alcohol stream" (instead of "too much alcohol in his blood stream"), because Steve had been drinking too, so he wanted to convey that behavior in his speech.
- Randy Spelling would get very nervous and sweaty seconds before filming started. He'd start to wonder whether other crew members, like the sound people, thought he got the job because of nepotism. His heart would beat very fast.
- There's a re-enactment of fan Caitlyn, chugging a shot and playing quarters.
- Randy Spelling confirms that Aaron didn't fly, because of a promise Aaron made to his mother. So he'd take the train. Or they would use a motor home.
- There was a time where they rented the caboose of an Amtrak, to go from L.A. to New York, before boarding the Queen Elizabeth 2.
- They say the touching scene near the end between Steve and Randy was really good, and that Randy doesn't have to worry about "being a Spelling", because that was incredible work.
- Randy Spelling had good memories of Jed Allen. He said Jed commanded a lot of attention, and had good posture.
- Rick Allen says that Rush Sanders is a lot like Jed Allen, with that commanding presence.
- Ryan Thomas Brown (Muntz) also stops by. He has a restaurant in the northwest.
- He says Jed was a perfect father figure.
- Larry's friend Peter Brinckeroff stops by. He says his two favorite memories of Jed are:
- He never does a take the same way twice, otherwise he gets bored.
- He had a Mercedes car that wasn't originally a convertible, but he made into a convertible.

2023.03.26 09:04 FlamingoMN It's been 1 month
You've been gone exactly a month today. Time means nothing because, on the one hand, it seems like you JUST died, but in the other, it seems as though you've been gone forever. A lot has happened in this month, though. We had your funeral. I picked out the grave marker. Your obituary was in the paper. I had to take your name off our accounts and put them in my name. We changed back to DST, so it's lighter longer now. It's officially spring. I've been cleaning your room, giving away your medical stuff, and giving your family the things you wanted them to have. I'm still pretty numb. I miss you every day. I still have a hard time believing you're not here. I don't know how to cook for 1 person. Max still misses you. I never wanted a tattoo before, but I now have an idea for 3 that honor you. I still read your texts and listen to your voicemails. I still don't know what I'm supposed to do now. I don't feel as safe as I did when you were here. I hate meeting new people who didn't know you and are now just meeting the widow version of me. I was better with you than I am without you. Most of the snow is gone, and I hate that you're missing this. I hear the chickadees singing their spring songs, and the red wing blackbirds sang for the first time today. The home opener is less than 2 weeks away, and I hate we missed baseball last year because we got covid and never tried for tickets the rest of the summer. I'm never going to watch the Twins with you again. đ I got through 1 month. I can't believe it. You're everywhere and nowhere. You are so loved and so missed. I hope you're fully free and fully you and fully loved wherever you are. I miss you so much.

2023.03.26 08:53 jobrody Present and future of Hartford?
I live overseas, but we're looking to potentially return to New England. My parents both grew up in West Hartford and I remember driving through downtown as a kid in the 80s to visit my grandparents wondering "what happened here?" My impression was Hartford got clobbered by suburbanization and never experienced the renewal that Boston and New York had. Is it still like this? Is there hope that work-from-home refugees from high COL areas might revitalize it? My apologies if I come across as overly negative or critical - I'm going on 30 year-old impressions.

2023.03.26 06:56 kandehwilliams91 My 32-MLB Plan (With Nashville and Portland Teams)
EXPANSION TEAMS:
REALIGNMENT:
AMERICAN LEAGUE AL EAST | AL NORTH | AL SOUTH | AL WEST |
Baltimore Orioles | Chicago White Sox | Colorado Rockies | Los Angeles Angels |
Boston Red Sox | Cleveland Guardians | Houston Astros | Oakland Athletics |
New York Yankees | Detroit Tigers | Kansas City Royals | Portland Pioneers |
Toronto Blue Jays | Minnesota Twins | Texas Rangers | Seattle Mariners |
AL East Breakdown: Not much changes. The 4 closest teams in the AL East remain intact. Keeps the Red Sox-Yankees historical rivalry.
AL North Breakdown: Again, not much changes. The 4 closest teams from the AL Central remain intact.
AL South Breakdown: A newly formed division. The 2 Texas teams are finally removed from the AL West. Joining them are the Kansas City Royals and the Colorado Rockies who switch leagues. Royals-Rockies could potentially become a good rivalry if both teams get good, could mirror the Broncos-Chiefs rivalry in the NFL.
AL West Breakdown: The 3 Pacific time zone teams (Angels, Athletics and Mariners) remain intact. Joining them would be the Portland Pioneers expansion team. The new Portland team could provide the Mariners an instant rivalry. If the Athletics move to Las Vegas, it would have no effect on this realignment.
NATIONAL LEAGUE NL EAST | NL NORTH | NL SOUTH | NL WEST |
New York Mets | Chicago Cubs | Atlanta Braves | Arizona Diamondbacks |
Philadelphia Phillies | Cincinnati Reds | Miami Marlins | Los Angeles Dodgers |
Pittsburgh Pirates | Milwaukee Brewers | Nashville Stars | San Diego Padres |
Washington Nationals | St. Louis Cardinals | Tampa Bay Rays | San Francisco Giants |
NL East Breakdown: The 3 northeast corridor teams (Mets, Phillies and Nationals) remain intact. Joining them are the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Phillies and Pirates would get to rekindle their in-state rivalry.
NL North Breakdown: Not much changes. The 4 closest teams from the NL Central remain intact. Keeps the Cubs-Cardinals historical rivalry.
NL South Breakdown: A newly formed division. The 2 southernmost teams from the original NL East (Braves and Marlins), along with the Tampa Bay Rays who switch leagues and the Nashville Stars expansion team would also join this division. The new Nashville team could form an instant rivalry with the Braves. Also, the Rays and Marlins could have an in-state rivalry similar to Astros-Rangers, being placed in the same division.
NL West Breakdown: Not much changes. The 4 closest teams in the NL West remain intact. Keeps the Dodgers-Giants historical rivalry.
NEW REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE:
13 games each vs. all 3 division opponents = 39 games (6 Home & 7 Away vs. each of 2 teams and 7 Home & 6 Away vs. 1 team) or
(7 Home & 6 Away vs. each of 2 teams and 6 Home & 7 Away vs. 1 team)
Rotate extra home game between teams annually.
6 games each vs. all 12 non-division opponents within league = 72 games (3 Home & 3 Away vs. each team)
6 games vs. interleague "natural rival" (listed below) = 6 games (3 Home & 3 Away)
3 games each vs. remaining 15 interleague opponents = 45 games (3 Home vs. each of 8 teams and 3 Away vs. each of 7 teams) or
(3 Home vs. each of 7 teams and 3 Away vs. each of 8 teams)
Rotate venue of each matchup annually.
Teams that get an extra home division game would get an extra away interleague series and vice versa.
39 games + 72 games + 6 games + 45 games = 162-Game Regular Season
INTERLEAGUE "NATURAL RIVALRY" PAIRINGS: AL TEAM | NL TEAM |
New York Yankees | New York Mets |
Chicago White Sox | Chicago Cubs |
Los Angeles Angels | Los Angeles Dodgers |
Baltimore Orioles | Washington Nationals |
Oakland Athletics | San Francisco Giants |
Cleveland Guardians | Cincinnati Reds |
Kansas City Royals | St. Louis Cardinals |
Minnesota Twins | Milwaukee Brewers |
Boston Red Sox | Philadelphia Phillies |
Detroit Tigers | Pittsburgh Pirates |
Toronto Blue Jays | Atlanta Braves |
Houston Astros | Miami Marlins |
Texas Rangers | Tampa Bay Rays |
Colorado Rockies | Nashville Stars |
Seattle Mariners | San Diego Padres |
Portland Pioneers | Arizona Diamondbacks |
If the Athletics relocate to Las Vegas it would instead be:
Arizona Diamondbacks-Las Vegas Athletics
Seattle Mariners-San Francisco Giants
Portland Pioneers-San Diego Padres
Everything else would remain the same.
POSTSEASON: There would be 14 teams total qualifying (7 teams per league).
In each league, the 4 division winners plus 3 wild-cards (best regular season records amongst non-division winners) would qualify for the postseason.
The 4 division winners would be seeded #1-#4 by regular season record.
The 3 wild-cards would be seeded #5-#7 by regular season record.
American League Wild-Card Series (ALWCS) & National League Wild-Card Series (NLWCS): Would be (#2 Seed vs. #7 Seed), (#3 Seed vs. #6 Seed) and (#4 Seed vs. #5 Seed).
The #1 seed would have a bye for this round.
Best-of-3 series.
All games in series would be hosted by the #2, #3 and #4 seeds (division winners) regardless of regular season records and played on 3 consecutive days (Monday-Wednesday) right after the end of the regular season. The #5, #6 and #7 seeds (wild-cards) would get no home games for this round.
American League Division Series (ALDS) & National League Division Series (NLDS): Would be (#1 Seed vs. LWCS winner with worst regular season record) and (the 2 remaining LWCS winners vs. each other).
Best-of-5 series (2-2-1 format).
Higher seed would get home-field advantage regardless of regular season records. All of the teams involved in this round would play Game 1 of their respective series on the Friday after the LWCS (the Thursday after the LWCS would be used as a travel day). The remaining games in these series for this round would be staggered accordingly.
American League Championship Series (ALCS) & National League Championship Series (NLCS): LDS winners would square off for league pennants.
Best-of-7 series (2-3-2 format).
Higher seed would get home-field advantage regardless of regular season records.
World Series (WS): AL pennant winner and NL pennant winner would square off for the World Series Championship.
Best-of-7 series (2-3-2 format).
Better regular season record would get home-field advantage.

2023.03.26 06:31 askme2023 The Disappearance of 9 Year Old Taj Narbonne
After reviewing the Asha Degree case, you may find that youâve hit a brick wall. Itâs refreshing to explore other similar cases to gain perspective and create more discussions.
9 year old Taj Narbonne was a fourth-grade student at Fall Brook Elementary School and is described as an intelligent, well-mannered and soft-spoken child who was mature for his age. At the time of his disappearance Taj resided with his mother, Annette Dean, and his stepfather, Clarence Dean, at an apartment in Leominster, Massachusetts in 1981. He disappeared from his bed in the middle of the night, taking his slippers with him but no other clothes. He has never been heard from again.
Taj had recently returned home from visiting with his grandparents. The night before he disappeared, Clarence arrived at home around 11:30 p.m. He and Annette had a beer together and went to bed at about midnight. She woke up at 1:30 a.m. and realized she was alone in the bed, and got up to look for Clarence. She accidentally knocked over some bottles and then told Clarence he'd better go to Taj's room in case he was frightened by the noise. Annette then returned to bed. When she woke up the next morning, Taj was nowhere to be found.
On March 31, 1981, Annette called her mother, Eunice Narbonne, at approximately 8:00 a.m. to report that she could not find Taj. She stated his slippers were also missing, but the clothes she'd laid out for him to wear were still there, and she found a handwritten note reading: âI'm going away because I don't want to live here anymore. I don't have to listen to anybody anymore." A search of the area produced no clues as to his whereabouts. Tajâs grandmother have said they do not believe their grandson left home voluntarily because he was terrified of the dark and was not wearing socks or shoes at the time he vanished. The temperature that morning hovered around freezing.
Annette initially believed that her son left of his own accord to get away from his stepfather, Clarence. However, Taj was never located and at nine, it is unlikely that he had the capabilities to disappear without a trace. Tajâs grandmother stated that Taj called her the evening of his disappearance and asked her to come and get him, saying he was afraid. She told him to go to sleep.
Tajâs mother, Annette, who was nine months pregnant at the time, told authorities that Taj was terrified of Clarence and did not want to live with him, and he often lived apart from his family as a result. Taj's grandparents stated Clarence detested Taj, and suggested racial issues were to blame; since Clarence is African-American.
Taj himself had told his teacher and his best friend that he was being abused at home. He also saw the school guidance counselor on a regular basis to talk about his problems. Annette was frightened of Clarence's temper and planned to leave him and take Taj and her other child, age one, with her. She delayed her departure, however, due to her pregnancy.
Police procedures involving missing children were much different in 1981. It was about a week after Taj's disappearance when it was publicized. His family placed advertisements in several newspapers and hired a private investigator to assist with the search, but none of the leads went anywhere.
In 1982, Clarence was sentenced to six years in prison for kidnapping and stabbing his estranged wife. He and Annette divorced in 1983. She went into hiding with her children for a time after Clarence was released from prison.
Clarence suffers from mental illness and is now a resident in Bridgewater State Hospital. Annette has since remarried and moved to New York; she now goes by the name Annette Long.
Authorities searched a barn in Leominster in June 1989, over eight years after Taj disappeared. The barn was less than one mile from his family's residence. Investigators stated that they searched for his remains, but no evidence was located.
Tajâs case remains unsolved and continues to be classified as a non-family abduction.

2023.03.26 06:19 XxBlack2MasquexX Funny story involving Michael Myers and a haunted house
So I work at a haunted attraction in upstate New York called the Field of Horror, and last season we had one single Michael Myers roaming actor that would walk our midway. The guy was we wearing a Halloween kills mask I believe and he would carry a Bluetooth speaker and play the then song as he would scare. He was damn good apparently and was able to miniver the crowd in such a way that he was seemingly everywhere at once. The owners were so impressed that it started some kind of inside joke between them and my boss.so the week before the last weekend of the run,my boss posts in our cast Facebook group, asking for if anyone has jumpsuits and MM masks to bring them to the haunt. During the corse of the last night all the tallest actors, parking attendants, and the original Michael along with everyone who brought their own costumes from home, quietly yet quickly replaced all our normal timing monsters with a small army of Michaels! They apparently swarmed and then fallowed the owners conga line style thru each of the houses , I only saw them briefly as Iâm a house scare actor so my interactions are limited to whoever stumbles into my room, but it was one hell of sight as a gaggle of Michael Myers of all shapes and sizes are just tailgating the owners. Now at my haunt we have a house of the night award, and each night all the houses (and the roamers) are able to get the chance to take the award home for the night. That night the Michael Myerses won the award, and unfortunately we never were filled in On the details of the inside joke

2023.03.26 05:25 red-0405 27 [M4F] GENUINE CONNECTION WITH SOMEONE WHO CRAVES FOR GROWTH TOO
Once upon a time, there was a tall, nerd, and not-much attractive guy
pero pwede na who woke up one morning, looked at the sky, and thought, "Well, this sucks." He knew there was only one solution - to turn to the all-knowing oracle of modern dating: T̶i̶n̶d̶e̶r̶ Reddit lol.
With his trusty cup of coffee in hand, he set out to find someone who shared his thirst for knowledge, someone who could keep up with his nerdy quirks, and someone who he could eventually take on 'friendly' dates (whatever that means). He wasn't in a rush to jump into anything too serious too soon, but he knew that someday, he wanted to find someone he could build a meaningful and caring relationship with.
So if you're a fellow lover of coffee, learning, and all things nerdy, this tall drink of water might just be the partner in crime you've been looking for. Dating at times feel like a job hunt doesn't it? So I thought itâd be fun to write it in a mock format just like a resume! LOL
About me
An old soul as older people I spoke with would say, into business and investments, frustrated law student, can drive a fucking 10 wheeler truck, no ex issues or sabit, can provide a certificate of no relationship (kahit wala naman nun haha).
- I'm 5'10", medium built if that matters, resides in quezon city
- I'm an INTJ, Aries, if youâre into MBTI and believes in horoscope.
- Loves to read self-help books as I love to learn and motivate myself along the way.
- I'm the kind of person who doesn't follow the herd blindly, even if it means standing alone in a field of conformity. My principles are like a compass, always pointing me in the right direction, even if it's not the most popular route. In short, I'm not afraid to swim against the current, as long as it's in line with my beliefs.
- You could say that my communication style is like a triple-layered cake: serious, meaningful, and sprinkled with a healthy dose of humor. Sure, I may come off as awkward at times, but that's just my way of keeping things interesting. After all, who wants a bland and flavorless conversation when you can have a deliciously complex one? So, if you're looking for someone who can engage in a thoughtful discussion, crack a few jokes, and still leave you with something to ponder, then look no further.
- I'm what you might call a clean freak with a creative streak. As someone who's a bit OC (okay, maybe more than a bit), I can't stand to see a messy or cluttered home. But don't worry, I'm not the type to wait around for someone else to do the dirty work. I take pride in noticing when something needs to be done and taking care of it without being asked - it's like a satisfying little victory every time. And when it comes to interior design and home decor, I'm practically a pro. I'm always on the hunt for the latest and greatest tools and gadgets to keep things looking fresh and stylish. So if you're looking for someone to spruce up your space and keep things sparkling clean, I'm your go-to guy.
- I'm not in the business of putting people down - unless we're talking about the volume on the stereo (badum-tss!). But seriously, I believe in treating others with kindness and respect, even when it's not the easiest thing to do. After all, life is hard enough without having to deal with someone else's negativity. So let's lift each other up instead of tearing each other down, shall we?
- I set feasible goals and actively pursue them.
Here's a list of my favorites:
Movies/Series | Music | Places | Activities | Books |
Godfather | Radiohead | Paris (not yet) | Cycling | The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday |
Sherlock | Eraserheads | Coffee Shops | Painting | How to Win Friends & Influence People |
Castaway | Chicago | Cebu | Roadtrips | Meditations by Marcus Aurelius |
Forrest Gump | Ebe Dancel | Japan | Diving | Start with Why by Simon Sinek |
Homeland | Urbandub | Rome (not yet) | Piano | Atomic Habits by James Clear |
Before Sunset | Frederic Chopin | Canada | Travelling | How to think like a Roman Emperor |
The Office | Eminem | New York (not yet) | Cooking | Letters from Stoic |
Big Bang Theory | Dr. Dre | Maldives (not yet) | Film & Photography | 48 Laws of Power |
Breaking Bad | Elton John | Marrakesh (not yet) | Badminton | The Intelligent Investor |
Pros:
- Responsible (Good credit score, no debts, no criminal records, and self-reliant)
- Curious type of person, who's ready to listen and craves to learn a lot of things
- Doesn't do drugs and is not a heavy drinkealcoholic.
- Respects your views and accept healthy criticism.
- Actually appreciating the things you'll do for me, and showing it. If you cooked a big dinner, saying thank you is nice. Doing the dishes and cleaning the kitchen is even nicer, and in my opinion, should be the norm. The cook doesn't clean. If someone does something for me, I'll show them that their effort was appreciated instead of just accepting their generosity and then running off back to whatever I'm doing.
- Accepts responsibility for one's own actions and does not try to blame everything or everyone else.
- Doesnât play online and computer games
My preference:
- Someone who has a strong passion for accurate and comprehensive learning, maintains a normal BMI, and is beautiful and easy on the eyes - I believe that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes (no offense intended towards plus-size women!).
- High standards for what she wants and is not afraid to communicate it.
- Craves knowledge too. Love and isn't afraid to try new things
- Passionate and proud about something they've been working on/have done/are planning to do
- Confident about what they want but isn't in-your-face about it.
Let's take a break from stressing over the mundane and focus on the important stuff - like what will make us happy for the rest of our lives! Share your thoughts on how we can achieve that and let's get this happiness train moving! Oh, and if you're curious letâs exchange photos first!

2023.03.26 05:08 Future_Ad_3485 Valley of the Unknown Part Twenty: A Trip Through a Nightmare
Violet:
Inky water enveloped me, the serenity of my own water calming my nerves. Shrill shrieks shattered the peace, clawed hands ripping me down. Air, I needed air. Kicking at them, the water drained away. The remains of our former hometown surrounded me, the crispy remains still smoking. Empty footfalls echoed around me, a solitary figure stepped out of the shadows. A giant ax hung over his shoulder, his wooden face cocked to the left. The black iron ax head glistened in the pale moonlight, the worn wooden handle groaning in protest. Strings hung off of his arms, my face paling. Turning to run, strings wrapped around my wrists and ankles. Clammy sweat drenched my skin, a shaky scream bursting from my lips.
âSo this is your nightmare.â A deep male voice thundered, cold fingers ripping my head back. âHow typical of you. Losing control sends you to another place. Look at the mess you created.â Shoving my head down, he forced me to survey the damage. Tears welled up in my eyes, the guilt gnawing at me. A cold presence raised the hair on the back of my neck, fangs sinking into the tender flesh of my throat. Ripping out a chunk, no weapons were anywhere to be found. Silent tears stained my cheeks, a long tongue licking the wound. Chains ripped him off of me, Moonaya cut the strings. Collapsing into a heap, the blood stained my ivory satin nightgown. Clutching my neck, copper poisoned my taste buds. Wrapping gauze around my neck, her shadowy arms hung over my shoulders.
âYou need to defeat him in the real world. Forgive for what I am about to do.â She whispered cautiously, shoving me out of the dream.
Landing on my face, the bleeding to a slow stop. The wound refused to heal, my fingers curling around my scythe. Moonaya was going to die for this, a groan leaving my lips as I struggled to my bare feet. Fear widened my eyes, my body trembling at the sight of the burnt remains of my former hometown. Something felt off, empty footfalls echoed behind me. Spinning on my heels, a cloaked figure charged at me with the ax from my dream. A foul stench mixed with the burnt wood, our weapons clashing violently. Locked in our position, his hood fell back. My breath hitched, a yellowed skull with empty sockets glared back at me. This was a reaper, the chill coming off of his body created a sea of ice. Panic gripped my mind, my weapon beginning to shake in my arm.
âNo, no, no.â I panicked audibly, knowing that I couldnât defeat death. âMy time isnât up.â The skull cocked to the right, my chains tossing him into a pile of rubble. Sprinting away, storm clouds brewed over my head. Snow drifted aimlessly, the reaper barely even trying. The ice stung the bottom of my feet, the reaper popping up in front of me. This couldn't be happening. At least things couldn't get worse, right?
âYou were supposed to die in the fire with your brother. Hell, your husband was supposed to be the one to start it. You changed fate and now you must pay the price.â He thundered darkly, his ax swinging towards my face. Dodging the attack, despair haunted me. My children needed me. My brother needed me. Jack needed me.
âHe is a corrupt reaper. He has been haunting the area and it is up to you to snuff him out. You can kill him with your weapon.â Moonaya whispered in my ear, the scythe doubling in size. âDonât let him touch you or you will die. Good luck.â Wanting to kill her even more, her shadowy figure disappeared. Spinning my scythe over my head, his ax came down at my head. Blocking it with the handle, chains curled around the handle. Swinging him over my head, he landed in another pile of rubble. No more running, I yelled at myself. Standing my ground, he popped up in front of me. Time stopped, his hand inches from my shoulders. Dr. Death knocked me to the ice, the reaperâs hand touching his shoulder. A tortured wail burst from my lips, his body decaying to black ash. My eyebrow twitched irritably, a darkness washing over me. An inky blackness darkened my eyes, my hair floating behind me. A wave of water flooded the town, the inky black water flowing over the top of my feet. Tears of rage flooded from my eyes, black blood mixing with them. Raising my scythe, chains shot from the sky. The reaper never stood a chance, the water beginning to boil. Chains wrapped around the reaper, ribbons of water smashed into his body. Splashing through the water, energy built around the tip of my scythe.
âRot in Hell, you rotten bastard!â I shouted through a wall of tears, the tip of my scythe smashing into his skull. A calm came before the storm, a wave of energy blasted me back. Crashing into the burnt remains of the funeral home, a metal pipe stuck out of my shoulder. Powering down, my body felt like it had been hit by a train. Broken sobs wracked my body, the endless sea of tears soaked my lap. All of this was my fault, my teeth gritting as I ripped the pipe from my shoulder. The wounds sealed shut, the rumble crumbled underneath my feet as I struggled to stand. Stepping over the wall, tears blurred my vision. Wiping the tears away, the water receded into the ground. Stumbling over to the spot where Dr. Death once stood, a single crystal feather remained. Scooping it up, the corner of my lips quivered. Clutching it close to my chest, teardrops cascaded over the top of my hand. As annoying as he was, he didnât deserve that. A sea of white lilies bloomed around my feet, a raven shaped oak sprouting at my feet. Unsure of what to feel, the growth groaned to a halt. An envelope fluttered into my trembling palm, my name scrawled across the back. Chaos erupted around me, hunters surrounding me. Awkward silence passed between us, my scythe hanging limply by my side. Launching into the air, my feet leapt from branch to branch. Home, I needed to get home. Branches creaked behind me, ten hunters were on my tail. Swinging my scythe once, a blast of wind knocked them back. A myriad of emotions threw off my concentration, black iron arrows whizzed past my head. Swinging down to the next branch, a body slammed into me. Branches scratched my face with every second of me falling to the ground, a net encapsulating my body. Pressing my palm against the rope, scarlet flames devoured them. Smashing into the ground, the weakened dirt gave way. Flicking my wrist, trees dropped over the hole. The last light flickered out, torches roared to life. My eyes scanned the jagged walls, a sudden pain jolted my ankle. An angry swollen ankle greeted me, scuttling echoed down the tunnel. Sliding down the wall, Dr. Deathâs soul stone rested in my quaking palm. Taking a deep breath, a giant centipede scurried my way. Lifting up my palm, a blast of air shattered him to pieces. Focus on the task at hand, dummy. Using the wall, my ankle protested with every attempt to stand up. Falling back down, every cell in my body wanted to call for Dr. Death. Pulling my knees to my chest, the intense fear was becoming too much. Help, I needed help. Brushing past the emotional pain, a long groan escaped my lips as I struggled to my feet. Using the wall, hours passed of me getting lost and ending up in the same spot. Screaming into the ceiling, the frustration laced my voice.
âFuck all of this!â I cursed with clenched fists, clammy sweat drenched my skin. âI am so hungry. Which way should I go now?â Gathering my wits, there had to be another way out. Leaning against the wall, another centipede crawled in my direction. Blasting it with another ball of air, the exoskeleton clattered to the floor. An idea came to mind, my eyes falling on the remaining tracks. Loose dirt crunched underneath my bare feet, the twisting tunnels led me to a nest full of the centipedes. The morning sun bathed their muddy brown exoskeletons, hissing bouncing off of the walls. Millions of beady eyes gazed upon my small form, a nervous grin twitched on my lips. Pincers exploded from their mouths, green venom burned a hole in the rock. Jumping back, Dr. Deathâs soul stone slipped from my hands. Tears welled up in my eyes, the stone sliding into the hole. Tears poured from my eyes as the last of him went up in smoke. This wasnât the time to cry, an escape coming into play. Leaping over the hole, my trembling fingers placed the letter in my teeth. Climbing up the smooth exoskeleton, my hands reached for the top of the hole. A slender hand yanked me up, my relief turning to dread. An armored hunter pressed a muzzle to my forehead, my eyes rolling. Swinging my good leg into their jaw, the crack of their neck sickened me. A cloud of dirt obscured my escape, a motorcycle glistened in the distance. Stealing their coat, the crinkled letter barely fit into the pocket in the jacket. Shoving the hunterâs boots on, the silver of their keys glinted in the orange rays of the sun. Throwing the helmet over my head, the keys slid into the ignition with ease. A wave of relief washed over me the moment the engine rumbled to life. Peeling onto the road, the chilly morning air lashed at my bare legs. My scythe shrank down to a bracelet, childlike wonder brightening my eyes at the new spell. A dozen black SUVs appeared in my mirror, bullets whizzed by my head. The tires squealed with the abrupt turn down the nearest dirt road. My vision blurred, my powers were dwindling. Inky blood poured from my eyes and nose, fresh tears mixing with the sludge. A log popped up out of nowhere, my body flying over the handle upon impact. Flying into a tree, the crack of my leg breaking scared the animals away. Rolling down a hill, rocks and branches bruised my skin. A steady stream of curse words flooded from my lips, a cliff inches from me. Barks of dogs sent chills up my skin, my fingers gripped the edge. The hunterâs were fast approaching, my heart sinking at the two hundred foot drop. Taking a deep breath, I let go. Closing my eyes, all I could feel was the chilly morning air lash at my skin. Grabbing the nearest branch, my arm quaked with every swing down to the next one. Lowering myself onto the ground, an earth shattering scream echoed in the air. Why couldnât I heal! Using the trees to hike home, the trees soon became familiar. Glancing back, a long sigh flowed from my lips at the sight of no hunters. Resting against a giant rock, shaking hands ripping off the helmet. My reflection horrified me, bruises and cuts covered my skin. Reaching into the pocket, the letter quaked like a leaf in early winter. Ripping it open, tears stained the page.
Miss Violet,
If you get this letter I am dead. I would give you my soul stone but it should have fallen down the hole. I valued my time with your sarcastic ass, and will miss you forever. You are like a daughter I never deserved. Donât live in the past. At least that is what you told me. I expect you to follow your advice. I am gifting you with my blade, and its magical abilities. Combine it with your staff and you will inherit my powers. Be responsible with them. One last thing. I am going to say the only thing that I couldnât bring myself to say. I love you with all of my feathers.
Sincerely,
Dr. Death.
Folding it up neatly, my lips brushed against the letter. Tucking it back into my pocket, Alex poked his head over the rock, my real smile brightening my face. Jackâs voice rang out in the distance, Alex jumping down. Embracing me warmly, his long hair brushed against my cheek. His hugs were always the best, the fond memories of our childhood stealing away some of the depression.
âSheâs over here, Jack!â He shouted with his million dollar grin, refusing to let me go. âYou look like a broken doll.â Chuckling lightly to myself, my hand ruffled the top of his head. Cupping his face, his brow cocked in a curious response.
âAnd yet here I was excited to see my annoying little brother.â I teased lightly, Jack smashing into me. âMy leg is broken and it wonât heal. Could you be a bit more careful!â A crippling depression weighed down on me, Dr. Deathâs medical bag swung in his other hand. Seeing it shattered my heart, my eyes widening with the memory of him decaying to dust. Shoving everyone off of me, a kick from my good leg sent the bag into my lap. Ripping it open, the metal on my scythe bracelet heated up. Chewing it off with my fang, something told me that I should close the bag. Tossing it into the air, an explosion shattered the leather bag. A new scythe floated down to my lap, ivory bone had replaced the handle. The ivory contrasted the rubies, my finger tracing the onyx blade. A burning sensation haunted my right eye, black sludge staining my cheek. All of his memories flooded my brain, his murders terrifying me.
The blood painted my face, my breathing grew shorter. The twisted halls of H.H. Holmesâ hotel taunted either side of me, his dark tendencies short circuiting my mind. More stabbing accompanied by the horrific screams of his victims taunted me, a cold hand ripping me into a cold jail cell. Rod iron bars surrounded me, the reaper from before floated in front of him. The yellowed skull gazed down at him, his soul stone spinning in his palm. Words were exchanged between them, one touch of his ax shifting the scene once more to the moment we met. A lean on my shoulder snapped me from the scene, an eager Dr. Death ruffling my hair.
âI hated you at first and you may have been a bit abusive.â He commented jovially, my heart shattering at the sight of him. âBeyond it all, your bravery won me over. If I had a daughter, she needed to be like you. You are the kindest person I know.â Sobs wracked my body, my head resting on his chest. Wishing he could come back with me, my heart knew that he couldn't. Our banter would often cure the silence of the world, the world suddenly growing quiet.
âI got you killed.â I wept brokenly, his hand patting the top of my head awkwardly. âI canât control my dreams. They keep sending me to the places I donât want to go. What the hell am I supposed to do?â Holding me by my shoulders, his sly grin told me that he was okay.
âYou didnât. I made the choice not you. I get to go to Heaven for my sacrifice. It is almost like my debts were paid off.â He bragged gleefully, spinning me around. âI did a lot of bad things if we are being honest here. You can turn into a raven now if you want. How cool is that! You can snap your fingers and pop up anywhere.â Wiping away my tears, a fit of laughter burst from my lips.
âI could have used that earlier. I had to get lost in tunnels for hours and fight giant centipedes. Then I had to steal a motorcycle, and broke my leg in the process.â I joked tenderly, his gloved hand wiping away my tears. âAm I ever going to be okay?â Flashing me his wicked grin, his hands cupped mine. Scarlet colored my cheeks, a worn pocket watch spun on his finger. Dropping it into my palm, an odd expression dawned on his face as I pressed it to my chest.
âKeep your head up and have fun, Miss Violet!â He wept softly, actual tears dripping onto my palm. âIt was nice working with you. You must wake up now.â Snapping his fingers, it all began to fade away.
Wails jerked me back to life, the bruises on my skin no longer showed. Glancing over at the mirror in our bedroom, half of my hair had lightened to a steely gray. Touching my right eye, the shimmering silver threw me off. Snapping my fingers, the room seemed larger. Black feathers came into view, a raven stared back at me. My mismatched eyes blinked rapidly, the tips of my wings rubbing the tip of my ash gray beak. A knock interrupted my trance, Jack popping his head in. His face fell on my raven form, a puff of feathers changed me back. Wanting to test another thing, my fingers snapped. Ending up behind him, my finger tapped his shoulder. Yes, it worked. I could save my friends now. Clasping my hands before I could snap them once more, his arm curled around the small of my waist.
âYou need to tell me how Dr. Death died.â He growled through gritted teeth, dropping his pocket watch into my palm. âThere is no way you are okay. He was your best friend at the end of the day.â Tears swam in my eyes, his words were the truth. Bowing my head in shame, teardrops soaked the top of my ghostly pale feet. None of this seemed fair yet when was it ever. Biting my lick, my healed leg still protested dully.
âHow could you say that!â I shouted venomously, refusing to look at him. âHe sacrificed himself for me. I didnât even see him coming. I am so sorry but my dreams keep taking me to places I donât want to go. I am so scared.â Resting my head on his chest, his lips brushed against the top of my head. Throwing a sweatshirt dress over my head, his slender hands grabbed my shoulders. Concern flashed in his eyes, a weak smile dimmed his features.
âI figured that.â He returned solemnly, cupping my face. âI am here to let you know that you scared me when you showed up with a broken leg and bruises. Now drink up, you look paler than usual.â Guiding my fangs to the nape of his neck, his tender flesh popping with my bite. Gulping his blood down, the hunger faded away to nothing. Sighing deeply, I shoved past him to our twins. Scooping them up, their big eyes relaxed my frayed nerves. Alex skidded in with a pile of DVDâs. Not having to say a word, my bare feet pounded after him. Time to bury my sorrow into a fictional show, the army of reapers stealing my attention. One hand pointed to me, clammy sweat drenching my skin. This couldnât be good.

2023.03.26 04:56 thinkingstranger March 25, 2023
https://heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/march-25-2023 On March 25, 1911, Frances Perkins was visiting with a friend who lived near Washington Square in New York City when they heard fire engines and screams. They rushed out to the street to see what the trouble was. A fire had broken out in a garment factory on the upper floors of a building on Washington Square, and the blaze ripped through the lint in the air. The only way out was down the elevator, which had been abandoned at the base of its shaft, or through an exit to the roof. But the factory owner had locked the roof exit that day because, he later testified, he was worried some of his workers might steal some of the blouses they were making.
âThe people had just begun to jump when we got there,â Perkins later recalled. âThey had been holding until that time, standing in the windowsills, being crowded by others behind them, the fire pressing closer and closer, the smoke closer and closer. Finally the men were trying to get out this thing that the firemen carry with them, a net to catch people if they do jump, the[y] were trying to get that out and they couldnât wait any longer. They began to jump. TheâŠweight of the bodies was so great, at the speed at which they were traveling that they broke through the net. Every one of them was killed, everybody who jumped was killed. It was a horrifying spectacle.â
By the time the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire was out, 147 young people were dead, either from their fall from the factory windows or from smoke inhalation.
Perkins had few illusions about industrial America: she had worked in a settlement house in an impoverished immigrant neighborhood in Chicago and was the head of the New York office of the National Consumers League, urging consumers to use their buying power to demand better conditions and wages for workers. But even she was shocked by the scene she witnessed on March 25.
By the next day, New Yorkers were gathering to talk about what had happened on their watch. âI can't begin to tell you how disturbed the people were everywhere,â Perkins said. âIt was as though we had all done something wrong. It shouldn't have been. We were sorryâŠ. We didn't want it that way. We hadnât intended to have 147 girls and boys killed in a factory. It was a terrible thing for the people of the City of New York and the State of New York to face.â
The Democratic majority leader in the New York legislature, Al Smithâwho would a few years later go on to four terms as New York governor and become the Democratic presidential nominee in 1928âwent to visit the families of the dead to express his sympathy and his grief. âIt was a human, decent, natural thing to do,â Perkins said, âand it was a sight he never forgot. It burned it into his mind. He also got to the morgue, I remember, at just the time when the survivors were being allowed to sort out the dead and see who was theirs and who could be recognized. He went along with a number of others to the morgue to support and help, you know, the old father or the sorrowing sister, do her terrible picking out.â
âThis was the kind of shock that we all had,â Perkins remembered.
The next Sunday, concerned New Yorkers met at the Metropolitan Opera House with the conviction that âsomething must be done. We've got to turn this into some kind of victory, some kind of constructive actionâŠ.â One man contributed $25,000 to fund citizensâ action to âmake sure that this kind of thing can never happen again.â
The gathering appointed a committee, which asked the legislature to create a bipartisan commission to figure out how to improve fire safety in factories. For four years, Frances Perkins was their chief investigator.
She later explained that although their mission was to stop factory fires, âwe went on and kept expanding the function of the commission 'till it came to be the report on sanitary conditions and to provide for their removal and to report all kinds of unsafe conditions and then to report all kinds of human conditions that were unfavorable to the employees, including long hours, including low wages, including the labor of children, including the overwork of women, including homework put out by the factories to be taken home by the women. It included almost everything you could think of that had been in agitation for years. We were authorized to investigate and report and recommend action on all these subjects.â
And they did. Al Smith was the speaker of the house when they published their report, and soon would become governor. Much of what the commission recommended became law.
Perkins later mused that perhaps the new legislation to protect workers had in some way paid the debt society owed to the young people who died in the Triangle Shirtwaist fire. âThe extent to which this legislation in New York marked a change in American political attitudes and policies toward social responsibility can scarcely be overrated,â she said. âIt was, I am convinced, a turning point.â
But she was not done. In 1919, over the fervent objections of men, Governor Smith appointed Perkins to the New York State Industrial Commission to help weed out the corruption that was weakening the new laws. She continued to be one of his closest advisers on labor issues. In 1929, when Franklin Delano Roosevelt replaced Smith as New York governor, he appointed Perkins to oversee the stateâs labor department as the Depression worsened. When President Herbert Hoover claimed that unemployment was ending, Perkins made national news when she repeatedly called him out with figures proving the opposite and said his âmisleading statementsâ were âcruel and irresponsible.â She began to work with leaders from other states to figure out how to protect workers and promote employment by working together.
In 1933, after the people had rejected Hooverâs plan to let the Depression burn itself out, President-elect Roosevelt asked Perkins to serve as Secretary of Labor in his administration. She accepted only on the condition that he back her goals: unemployment insurance, health insurance, old-age insurance, a 40-hour work week, a minimum wage, and abolition of child labor. She later recalled: âI remember he looked so startled, and he said, âWell, do you think it can be done?ââ
She promised to find out.
Once in office, Perkins was a driving force behind the administrationâs massive investment in public works projects to get people back to work. She urged the government to spend $3.3 billion on schools, roads, housing, and post offices. Those projects employed more than a million people in 1934.
In 1935, FDR signed the Social Security Act, providing ordinary Americans with unemployment insurance; aid to homeless, dependent, and neglected children; funds to promote maternal and child welfare; and public health services.
In 1938, Congress passed the Fair Labor Standards Act, which established a minimum wage and maximum hours. It banned child labor.
Frances Perkins, and all those who worked with her, transformed the horror of the Triangle Shirtwaist fire into the heart of our nationâs basic social safety net.
âThere is always a large horizonâŠ. There is much to be done,â Perkins said. âIt is up to you to contribute some small part to a program of human betterment for all time.â
