People always say "go vote" but then when we see the ballot we often don't know who most of those people are or what they do.
The Fort Worth Freedom Review is a local podcast about local elections and issues and we have been covering the local candidates and races for the past 4 months. We have compiled a spreadsheet of all the candidates with info about them, links to articles as well as the district maps. We want every voter to be informed on who you're voting for.
You can also find our podcast on our broadcast page or on spotify & apple podcasts as well as most other podcast apps.
Go vote for Mayor, City Council, FWISD Board, TCC Board, and Tarrant Regional Water District Board. These offices and their policies impact the lives of Fort Worthians far more than what happens in Washington ever will.

2020.07.19 04:43 AintEverLucky Checking in on Texas schools, Start of Fall 2020 edition -- when will 100+ large ISDs start the new school year, virtual vs in-person, etc

Howdy one and all. As I post this, Sunday July 19th, we're mere weeks from when Independent School Districts across Texas plan to start the 2020-21 school year. Similar to April when Spring 2020 started winding down, I figured it may help some folks if we had one consolidated thread to collect start-of-school news.
I'm starting with the districts in and around these areas -- Austin / Central Texas; Corpus Christi / Coastal Bend; Dallas / Ft. Worth; El Paso; Houston; Lubbock; Rio Grande Valley; San Antonio; and Waco/Killeen area. If or when Redditors pass along information about other large ISDs that I may have overlooked, feel free to mention them in the comments (with links if possible! thank you) and I'll update the top-note with those additions.
A few things to remember in terms of statewide guidelines from the TEA:
With these guidelines in mind, for each district I plan to list the start date listed on their website, as well as whether they plan to start the year with virtual learning only, and if so, for how long. (If I don't mention a virtual-only period, assume that the district will offer virtual and in-person instruction from the start.)
Austin area districts --
Corpus Christi / South Texas districts --
Dallas / Ft. Worth area districts -- please note that while there are heaps & heaps of districts around DFW, I'm sticking with those with enrollment topping 10,000 per this map.
El Paso area districts
Houston area districts -- as with DFW, I know there are umpteen different districts, and just to keep this semi-manageable, I'm going to look at the districts depicted in this map . If anyone wants to add links to districts in the outlying counties, that sounds OK to me.
Lubbock area districts -- going off this Lubbock County map
  • Abernathy ISD
  • Frenship ISD
  • Idalou ISD
  • Lorenzo ISD
  • Lubbock ISD
  • Lubbock-Cooper ISD
  • Lubbock ISD
  • Roosevelt ISD
  • Shallowwater ISD
  • Slaton ISD
  • Southland ISD
Rio Grande Valley districts including Laredo -- going from the TEA map for Education Service Center 1 and its territory stretches from Cameron County clear over to Webb
San Antonio area districts
Waco / Temple / Killeen area districts -- for now I'm going to stick with the bigger districts, i.e. those that contain one 6A high school, This page tied to the ESC for TEA Region 12 lists links to every ISD in the region.

2020.03.29 09:45 AintEverLucky checking in on Texas school districts -- here are 79 districts planning to remain closed past April 3rd

EDIT TO ADD on April 17th -- Gov. Abbott just ordered all TX schools (public, private & colleges) to remain closed "for the foreseeable future" i.e. for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year
Previous EDIT TO ADD on March 31st -- Gov. Abbott just ordered all TX schools to remain closed until May 4th
Original text on March 29th -- Hey folks. I know Gov. Abbott's Executive Order decreed that all schools throughout Texas should close through April 3rd, which is this next Friday. I'm also aware that some districts have made their own decisions to extend further.
I figured it may help some folks if we had an updated thread to collect this news. So I Googled the districts in and around the state's main urban areas -- Houston, Dallas / Ft. Worth, San Antonio, Austin and El Paso.
Again this is ONLY districts that have extended past the Governor's order of April 3rd, even if it's one extra school day. So if you don't see a large ISD in the list below, I probably left it off because it's sticking with April 3rd. But if you know of any beyond April 3rd that I've overlooked, feel free to mention them in the comments (with links if possible! thank you) and I'll update the top-note with those additions.
Thanks to tips from these folks & more, now (at 4:30 pm on March 29th) we're at 100+ districts! Shout-outs to u/Elderkind1 , u/Sparkledavisjr , u/lilacxsage , u/eternalgoatslayer , u/-Pick3lR1ck- and u/mirtheil and u/loveslit.
also per u/SodaCanBob: "Harmony (a charter district that is state-wide) is closed "until further notice"
Austin area districts -- note that Travis County has a "Stay at Home" order effective thru April 13th
Corpus Christi / South Texas districts -- hat tip to u/NO_internetpresence and also, more information about districts in the Greater Coastal Bend area here
Dallas / Ft. Worth area districts -- please note that while there are heaps & heaps of districts around DFW, I'm sticking with those with enrollment topping 10,000 per this map . If you want to add any of the smaller districts in the comments, be my guest. And please know that these following large districts currently plan to reopen on April 6th -- Allen, Arlington, Carrollton-Farmers Branch, Frisco, McKinney, Mesquite, Plano and Wylie.
El Paso area districts
Houston area districts -- as with DFW, I know there are umpteen different districts, and just to keep this semi-manageable, I'm going to look at the districts depicted in this map . If anyone wants to add links to districts in the outlying counties, that sounds OK to me.
San Antonio area districts
Waco / Temple / Killeen area districts -- hat tip to u/Wacokidmongo (lol, Blazing Saddles) for notifying me about this sweet list of Central Texas districts which, for now, says almost all of them currently plan to reopen on April 6th.

2017.02.28 15:51 hunter15991 Upcoming Major Municipal Elections - Contact Guide

Hey there, /esist! Glad to see enthusiasm as it pertains to the victory in Delaware, as well as US House races in early April. Calling for these state races - especially swing ones like GA-6 - is very very important.
But in addition to the state special elections (and the nationally important gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia), there are many municipal election taking place throughout the year. These ultimately are the people who influence your day to day lives the most - your city council and mayor manage public services, while your school board plays a vital role in determining local children's curriculum and overall education experience.
If you're more of a canvassing person vs. calling phones, or if you simply want to get involved locally, check the list to see if you live in a city with a scheduled election. I've included a contact link for the local Dem. party, the location of the seats up for grabs in that city if available, and election date.
If none of the candidates running in your area seem good, contact your local party and see if it's not too late to file your own candidacy - the 2016 election has shown that lack of experience isn't a be-all-end-all.
To save space, I will list elections ongoing in any of the top 100 cities by population, just like Ballotpedia does.
