2023.06.04 19:51 Dry-West- Drinking everyday is just.....the saddest thing in the entire world

It starts out so 'fun' and so innocent. Drinking at parties and telling silly stories the next morning. Going to the bar until 2 am with your friends every few weekends. Cold camping beers in the sun. Always coupled with a hangover and a bit of self-loathing, but still something you just do once in awhile and that is mostly just a good time.
Over the years, it morphs into a sad and pathetic existence void of all meaning. Your only drive in life is to drink. You truly think of nothing else. Life is literally about when you can buy/consume your next drink. For me, it morphed into drinking alone in my car in a secluded parking lot on a beautiful, sunny Saturday morning at 10 am. Seeing people out running races, biking, going on walks with their dogs and partners, going swimming in lakes, playing soccer in the fields, having a coffee at a cafe in the sun.....watching in misery from a distance at people living their lives, something I so desperately want to do. Of course these people aren't all entirely happy and have their own problems, but to me they are free and they don't live in the chains of alcohol addiction. I want to wake up and know that I'm free. I've never been more sad (and determined to quit) than I was yesterday morning.

2023.06.04 19:42 UpsetCancel9748 I think I made a mistake with how I dealt with my puppy biting me

My family has an 18 week year old border collie. Recently for the last two or three days when he was biting me I would try to blow into his face a bit to get him to stop. At the time I thought it was harmless and useful cause I figured it didn’t require me to raise my voice, and it was non physical. It usually got him to stop pretty quickly and he still seemed perfectly happy so I thought things were fine. But recently I looked it up and found out it may have been bad to do. Could someone else tell me if I did something wrong and what else I can do. I don’t mean to make him feel bad or anxious it’s just difficult cause he causes me to bleed sometimes and ruins my clothes with how aggressive he is. I’ve tried walk away strategies before but he would just chase me anyway and bite at me when my back was turned. Also he won’t be too harmed by this will he. I’ve been trying to be better cause I was really neglectful and bad with my families previous dogs, and I can’t mess up with him too.

WHY?? Why would you take something so happy and print this message of “all good things end, time to throw me out” on the inside??
You take this happy thing in this happy moment and make it sad and miserable and that it’s your fault. All those happy memories of playing with it? You were just creating destruction. You were hurting something. It goes from a stupid piece of cloth that has no feeling because it’s a piece of cloth, to an animate thing that was pretending to be happy while being destroyed to make you and your dog happy, and now you all pay the consequences of your destructive behavior.
“It’s just a dog toy.” Then why did they feel the need to print that on the inside of it? A reminder that any happiness you feel will never last and everything and everyone you love will ultimately leave you, and it’s always going to be your fault because interacting with anything will cause some kind of hurt at some point???

2023.06.04 19:27 Competitive-Fox-6050 Small wins over the week

I've had my dog for almost two years now and I was honestly losing hope when it came to her reactivity. We moved to a new city in March and that's when i started having a little hope again because she seemed like a whole new dog. She is still really anxious and scared but the reactivity to other people and dogs is slowly fading. This week and last weekend she met two of my friends that she hasn't met before and since then she is much calmer. She still barked at them and growled a little to my male friend but yesterday she fell asleep next to him and I'm so happy. She has also for the first time since I got her from the rescue played with another dog and she did amazing. She was a little confused but worked it out pretty fast and was very happy.
There wasn't really a point to this i just needed to tell someone who might relate to this. I'm so happy that there is hope for her and us and if someone is in the same boat as i have been in i hope you know there is hope for dogs that are like this.

2023.06.04 19:27 Kay-Sc97 Any suggestions for an ACL injury?

Hey guys! I picked up a European Great Dane yesterday from a woman on craiglist (I'm aware that's bad but I couldn't pass her up, she's 6 and was in a bad situation) and naturally she's a hot mess. Great news, took her same day to the vet, she's been fully vaccinated (rabies, distemper, bordatella, and the first lepto), she was heartworm negative (shocking considering she was on zero prevention for over a year) and is now happily on Simparica Trio which I was happy to purchase in a 12 month pack. Unfortunately, she has injured or torn her ACL in her left hind leg years ago. The vet was confident it was an old injury. He recommended joint supplements (which I already bought) and laser therapy (which I also purchased a package for). Is there anything else I can do for this poor dog? She gets around pretty well, she just doesn't put as much weight on that leg and over compensates with the other. The vet says it cannot be surgically repaired anymore as scar tissue has formed, and a ton of time has passed. Has anyone ever done laser therapy? He's got the newest laser on the market and says it's a lot different then the older versions which we previously used on our elderly dog who passed away years ago. Is this a common injury for Danes? I've owned Newfoundlands, Labs, and German Shepherds, never seen one damage an ACL. Any info would be super helpful!

2023.06.04 19:27 lovingheadbutts I resent my partner getting a new puppy - am I terrible?

TW: Animal death, mental health, self-harm, eating disorders.
Hi, this is my first time posting and please do not judge until you've read my whole post - it's just a crappy situation and I needed to write it out.
For context: I (29F) started dating my partner (30M) about 3 months ago and we fell for each other quickly, he is very loving and kind and the healthiest person that has come into my life for a long time. Before we started dating I had planned to adopt a cat from a local shelter, as I have struggled a lot with mental health issues including binge eating disorder, depression and suicidal thoughts - causing me to leave my job in Autumn 2022 and take a pay cut to become a home based freelancer, as I didnt even have the energy to get out of bed and shower some days. As I love cats and have owned a cat previously I thought caring for a fur baby would make both myself and the furball happy - me providing a loving home and cuddles to a kitty and them giving me a reason to get up and feel happier everyday as I get to take care of and bond with an animal.
So, 3 weeks ago I brought home the cutest grey and white 1.5yr old tomcat who was previously a streetcat and we instantly bonded and loved spending time with each other, with him giving affectionate headbutts and sitting on everyone he met to demand hugs. My partner was also there with him from Day 1 as he helped me pick him up from the shelter and loves animals as much as I do - so he obviously got a lot of cuddles and love from both of us. As I said, he's the best (both the cat and my BF).
However, after about 2 weeks at mine he got into a fight with another cat resulting in an injured paw, which I quickly took him to the vets for and was treated - although he wasn't happy about wearing the cone of shame and had to be continuously monitored, meaning I had to miss a family friends wedding, which I got flack for. On the Monday though, he looked very lethargic and violently threw up despite his medication so I rushed him in again to the vet the next day. He had previously had a UTI before living with me and was fully treated by the slehter, but now had a major bladder blockage and was rushed into surgery and kept for several days. After a few days, they said the damage to his Kidneys was too severe and had to be put down - a complete shock to myself and my immediate circle who I had told about him, as he was so young and I'd only had him for less than a month. I was devastated and lost my goddamn mind, with me having to say goodbye to him 3 days ago with my partner by my side, both of us crying and making sure he knew he was loved and cuddled and giving him lots of treats and love until he passed. I also had to pay over 2k in treatment and cremation costs right after he was gone, which felt like a gut punch as not only had I lost my furry best friend who I grew to love even in such a short time, but the insurance wouldn't cover it as technically the UTI was a previous condition and the insurance I was provided with from the shelter didn't cover it - draining my savings which I needed as I search for a more stable job - wrecking my mental health again. So really just a universal slap in the face from every direction.
Now, as I just feel so bereft at this unfortunate series of events and trying to process everything - my partner tells me he has decided to adopt a border collie/german shepherd cross puppy from his two friends who had a surprise litter, after being persuaded by them and also being a huge animal lover like myself. Although I am so happy for him as I know they'll find such joy in living together and forming the best bond ever, a horrible side of me is very angry and sad that my partner is now going to get to have the relationship with his fur baby that I never got to have with mine and I feel so desperately sad and guilty at these thoughts. I am going to be totally supportive and of course can't wait to have puppy cuddles, but everytime I think about it at the back of my mind I have a horrible pang of anger, jealousy and sadness which I wish wouldn't be there as I only want them both to find the loving bond I did with my adorable kitty, if even only for a short time. I thought I;d post here as I've never been good at processing grief and thought it'd help to write it out, as I want to be as supportive as possible and don't want to put an emotional burden onto his happy time by fully unloading.

People keep telling me that they cried upon hearing of Doobie's passing or even when he got sick. You don't know how much it means to me that Doobie touched your lives as well. You don't know how much it means to me that you care about him and you can feel my pain.
People have been asking me to get another dog. I know you mean well, but it hurts, so please don't. You wouldn't be asking someone who lost a partner, parent, or child to get a new one.
People have been offering to give me their dogs. I appreciate that you see me as a good furparent, but please do not offer this to me.
I gave my life, my everything, to Doobie. I need time for myself now for self-care, for travel, and do not ever want to experience this pain again. I know you all mean well, but it actually hurts when this is suggested.
People who I am not close to ask me for help, recommendations, and favors all the time. Or want to meet up, chitchat. Normally, I am glad to assist. But now, it's been less than 2 months since I lost him. I simply don't have the energy for this, unless I offer. There is no time limit for grieving, so please, let me be. Let me grieve.
Now, if you will message me to offer me 1 million pesos instead of dogs, or instead of asking for help, you are more than welcome! So I can finally travel again to start healing better 😛
If you see me ok through posts, if you see me laughing or having fun, do not think "Oh she's already ok" I have good days and bad days. My energy is very limited and my mood changes very quickly.
If you see me posting about hanging with dogs, I just LOVE dogs and they give me joy. It doesn't mean they are mine.
He was the only family I had around. Allow me to grieve and mope without judging me or giving me unsolicited advice. I hope to find my old zest-for-life, jolly, cheerful, sarcastic self again at some point, but for now, allow me to grieve please. And allow me to continue to celebrate his life through posts and anecdotes.
I appreciate you all. It's just a painful time right now, but I will continue to be happy for your own milestones in life.

For context, we were dating for 1.5 years and we were pretty happy in the earlier parts of the relationship. We started as friends and developed into more over the course of 3 months in college. We have a lot of shared interests and we handled arguments pretty easily together. We took things slow in our relationship to build a good foundation and we were really in love with each other. We have really crazy once in a lifetime memories together that I don't think either of us could forget about. Towards the ends of our relationship (the last month of it) I was putting too much pressure on her to spend more time with me and I would check in on her too much while she was out with friends making sure she was okay. It wasn't crazy person levels of checking in but it was enough to make her uncomfortable/annoyed with me doing it. I ended up being pretty clingy for the past month we were together, before that I still asked if she wanted to hangout too much but I wasn't nearly as needy back then. After a I bothered her two nights in a row she said she has lost romantic feelings for me. Obviously it was because I was being needy and I sought out a lot of time together rather than quality time together. We tried to make things work for a week but by then she said she wants to break up. I didn't fight her breakup since it seemed like she needed the space and I didn't want to make her stick in a situation where she wasn't happy. She was really sad during the breakup and didn't wish we had to but she felt like it would be inevitable if we didn't. We both handled it very maturely and remain on good terms. After we broke up, we mostly cut contact, but I sent like 2 total texts at different times near the beginning of the breakup saying that I missed her and she's in my thoughts and I love her to let her know she is cared for, nothing like begging for her back. She responded in kind with stuff like "It's been really hard" and "I miss/love you too." We also ran into each other at the gym on a few occasions and said hi. At one point we arranged a meetup to walk my dog together and on it she said that she would be willing to try the relationship again when summer ends with a fresh start and that she doesn't know if she's ready to talk yet since she is still grieving the breakup and it feels too fresh to do anything together (this was 3 weeks post breakup). She said she would probably be ready to talk again when school ended which is next week. I have barely talked to her and just been giving her as much space as I'm able to since it's what she wanted. A few days ago (week 5 of the breakup) I dropped off a jacket I thought was hers (turns out it wasn't) a scarf I got for her and a letter. This letter wasn't an attempt to get her back, the contents of it were just me apologizing for where I went wrong in the relationship and that I would approach the relationship differently and I hope we can start building up a friendship and whatever happens happens. It was short, sweet, and sincere. She texted me saying "Thanks for thinking of me, that's really nice of you. I appreciate the letter also." She also was laughing because it wasn't her sweater and said I can come around to pick it back up before she leaves for the summer and she walked out to hand it to me, not leaving it at doorstep. Almost all of her texts have been friendly (hearts and smiley faces) and straight forward, telling me kinda what she wants/needs. She also kept up the majority of our photos together up online and hasn't removed me from any of her social media. We can contact each other at any time and I'm sure she would respond fairly quick. I really have taken a lot of time to evaluate why I felt the way I did in those moments and what would be different this time and I think I have become a genuinely better person and could be a better partner and I learned what healthier boundaries are. I can give more info into the relationship in comments if needed. I was thinking that I could reach out sometime in the next week or two to start actually talking again slowly and build up rapport to get a connection between us. She is going to be going across the country where she doesn't really know anyone over the summer for an internship so I'm assuming that she would appreciate someone to talk to when there isn't going to be many people where she is. She has not been with any guys and doesn't participate in any hookup culture so I know she didn't leave me to be with anyone else, so just don't bother putting that in the comments. Also, as another bit of background, towards the beginning of our relationship I drank too much alcohol at threw up at her place which made her really upset and she broke up and we talked it out a few days later and got back together, so she is isn't a one and done kinda person. She also was really upset that before the breakup I said breakups are final to me since she still wanted me in her life, but in one of my few messages to her I apologized for saying that and I would still like to be in each other's life (I originally said that because my last ex made life hell being off/on). Her parents had also broken up multiple times and gotten back together so maybe that is something to consider so she *probably* also shares the view that you can get back together. If we got back together I think it would be for good this time and we wouldn't continue a pattern of breaking up only to get back together. I do think this breakup has been healthy for me and needed, I would just like the chance to get back together. Tldr: My ex lost feelings but we remained kind together and I want to know if it's possible to get back together. My question is if it sounds like I have a good chance of getting back together as well as what would be the best way to reach out to herebuild a connection?

I think I have an idea of where parental joy comes from with my dogs. I love when they get riled up and start running laps because I see how happy they are. Them being excited makes me excited.
Same with your kids- you should have them because you want to make your little one happy and give them a good life. Having a kid because you want a mini me or leave a legacy are selfish reasons to have kids. Having kids because we should raise the next generation is admirable, but that's probably not great for your mental health.
Another part of parenting means being the person who can make their problems better. I'm talking sleepless nights, tantrums, whining or sick kids. You should think about if you'll be empowered by being that person or it could be really horrible for you. For me I think it might be the latter. I'm like 80/20 against having kids.
It's just something I came to realize this morning while playing with my dogs. Hope it helps someone.

2023.06.04 19:06 memrph Help! 10 days post op upper extractions. Gag reflex getting worse each day.

I had all my uppers removed last Friday morning. And an immediate denture made and fitted that day. First 4 days were fine. A little bit of pain, slurred speech, and only eating liquids.
Day 5 quick office visit to see how I was doing, all was well. That night was my return to work, 12 hours wearing them straight. As some who had a speech impediment as a child I am very self conscious of how I sound, frankly not happy but assuming that will improve. Make it through the night, not great but ok.
Day 6,7,8 each day worse than the last. My gag reflex keeps activating the longer I wear them first few hours fine, then only an hour before it starts then 30 minutes before it starts. Or if I say any more than a few words in row I am gagging again. By then end of my 12 hour shift I can barely keep them in my mouth. I have tried chlorospetic, things to cause dry mouth, things to help dry mouth. Nothing works.
I didn’t gag the first few days now I can barely keep them in my mouth. They seem to fit just like they did in the beginning now loose or anything.
I feel like I made a huge mistake, I cant eat, talk, smoke. The only things I had left in my life I could enjoy are gone!
I have gone 24 hours without wearing them now, going to see if they can shorten the part covering my soft palate on Monday. Too maybe help with the gagging.
Any help, ideas to keep me from just giving up would be greatly appreciated!

I am a plant novice but have been trying since the pandemic with mixed results. One of the plants I was particularly happy about keeping in seemingly good health was this large tree (or tree like plant?) that I picked up on FB marketplace with little information about it's origins, species, or care.
Have had it 3+ years now and all seemed good... And then today while watering I noticed a mushroom in the base? And possibly some yellow-brown fungus on the side? Too much water I assume as it is in a pretty sunny spot? I also found a small centipede which my husband wanted me to kill because inside bugs is thumbs down but is there something to the base being an ecosystem I should consider?
Any guidance appreciated. Photos and nosy dog for reference.

It’s got soldier boi, shrek, Mario theme song, everything…now imagine someone TASTEFULLY, because that’s the best word I can think of for it…stitched various parts of the speech trump gave where he said “…bing bing, bong…” (a classic line that I hope follows his orange skin until it turns to cheap leather).
My dearest mother listened to this perverted YouTube poop…for fifteen minutes…
She was listening to something that sounded like a podcast where the guy said something about a “…sorros run cabal with figure like Elon musk and Ron Desantis…”
Now she’s listening to another one with a spokesperson that sounds like a dollar store KGSR hype brat. Apparently there’s a “rap song” about trump that is topping music charts…as cringy as this sounds, I unfortunately believe it…because now my mom is listening to it…and it sounds like a QAnons hype song.
As a last little bow on this abomination of a present, she’s now giving one of our dogs occasional doses of Ivermectin…why? Because her niece, who is almost dead with lupis, recommended it…the same ailing member of my family who thinks she can “sense” 5G…I’m gonna go play some war Thunder, and cry a bit.
