2023.05.29 13:36 xXCosmicChaosXx Changing wheel / tyre size
Hello. I recently bought a 2012 Volvo V60 T6 AWD. It's my first car and I'm loving it. It comes with 235/45 R17 J7 wheels and 136mm of clearance.
I want to get a second set of wheels at size 215/60 R16 J6.5 all terrain tyres, to give more clearance and perform better on light off road, dirt, light mud etc.
Is it possible?
I can also add a 20mm lift in the form of aftermarket spacers that go between the top of the suspension and the car.
Will the smaller wheels fit over the brake calipers? Any issues with braking or ABS? Any other roadblocks you can think of? I don't care if the Speedo is out. Wheel will fill out wheel well by an extra 11mm.

2023.05.29 13:36 Grim_Reapah Is it worthwhile persuing a relationship with someone disimilar?
I (23M) started seeing a gal (21F) about 3-4 months ago. The terms of the relationship still drift in the ether, but for the most part - we're dating. For the both of us, this is the first time on this ride and things have been understandably rocky.
I initially got scared (as I always do) and decided to cut things short citing lack of common interest and therefore incompatability. This definitely didn't go well but was very early on (2 weeks ish) - I didn't want to lead her on and make the news even more crushing down the line. I do however believe this was my master-stroke of my own undoing.
I managed to get a hold of my good friend and confidant and we had a good couple hour phone call. In it, he detailed to me that my reasons would be entirely justified if I actually knew how I was in a relationship. That amongst other things compelled me to apolagise and try pick things back up - if for nothing else but "lets see what happens".
Things were quite rosy, I found it difficult trying to manage my time with wanting to hang out with her now in the mix but I made it work. I like her, she makes me smile and we get along great.
I went overseas for a cheeky lil trip (one week) and when I came home things picked up where we left off. Four days later she asked me over to talk and abuptrly ended it there citing my initial reaons and something to the effect of "I think you were right". I didn't know what to say, so I respected her decision, didn't try to argue and left. The next day I couldn't stop thinking 'why?'. So in a moment of weakness I texted her, later telling her not to worry but she ended up wanting to see me anyway. She broke down in tears saying she made a mistake and she doesn't want me to go. I accepted and we continued on down the path.
A week later a similar thing happens again; this time I'm left feeling pretty empty and exhausted and honestly don't know which way to go. I joke to my good friend from earlier I'd be better of tossing a coin. He suggested sticking it out and trying to talk it through with her. So I did, I also said something to the effect of "If this happens again, I'm done" to her when talking about it.
That was close to a month ago now and we've barely spoken about it. I still like seeing her but as each week goes by I can't help but wonder whether I was right in the first place. Each of us at our core are wildly different people. I like riding motorcycles, partying, travelling, I'm an athiest and I study engineering whereas she doesn't like partying, hasn't been travelling (although wants to one day), isn't fond of cars or bikes, is a catholic and studies environmental science. Maybe we both believe it to be true deep down, but are too afraid to walk back alone and empty-handed.
I guess what I'm asking is: should I stay or should I go?
TLDR: 23M doesn't know whether to make it work and move on with 21F. Quite different people although interactions are very amicable.

2023.05.29 13:35 PromotionSoonIHope AITA for not stopping an argument between my mom & my wife
My wife Hailey is 21, as am I. We got married last September after dating for 5 months. Yes it was quick, whirlwind, whatever similar wording you can think of, it was all of that, but, I was thrilled I did it.
My mom wasn't thrilled and made it known at every opportunity how against it she was, there was never a single instance of, " I'm really happy for you guys".
Because my mom felt this way, my dad and my older sister fell in line and while they weren't as openly vocal, they surely weren't our biggest cheerleaders.
Last weekend, we went to my parents' house for dinner. Hailey pre-gamed for it by pounding High Noons before the car ride over.
We were all doing our fair share of drinking before the dinner and during the dinner.
My mom at one point, looks at Hailey( who'd probably had 5 glasses of wine by this point) & I and asks how we're doing. Hailey goes, " You don't give a shit so why bother?"
This puts my mom on the immediate defense and she says theres no reason to attack her for asking a simple question.
Hailey responds with " Fuck you"
My sister, in front of everyone, tells me to jump in and end this back and forth.
I said I wasn't going to do that because this needs to happen.
My mom told Hailey she didn't need to behave like such a brat and that was it. Hailey got up, told me we were leaving and started heading for the door. We ended up leaving.
I spent my night fielding calls & texts from family telling my I should've stepped in immediately
AITA?

2023.05.29 13:34 rhubarbjin [Silicon Curtain] Oliver Bullough - Russian Money in London Permeated its Service Sector & Secured Political Influence
This channel holds podcast-style interviews with various experts on various topics -- but this one struck me as especially Kraut-like in its analysis. The interviewee describes how the British financial system (unwittingly) enabled the deterioration of Russian society and continues to (unwittingly) obstruct democratic development around the world.
I recommend watching the whole thing. To entice you, I've transcribed some juicy quotes below.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yck3rYN-GbE [2:56] [Londongrad] is a catchy term [but] I do have a slight problem with it, because it stresses the role London plays in laundering money for the former Soviet Union when actually London is not nearly so specialized in the service it offers. [...] It launders money from absolutely anywhere. In fact, the money from Russia or Eastern Europe is a relatively small subset of the money that pours through the City of London.
[5:20] When communism ended in Russia in 1991, a reforming government came to power. Boris Yeltsin was then president, and appeared to be (in his erratic way) sincerely committed to build a new system. [...] A particular concern of the government at the time was: how do you prevent the Communists coming back to power in the next election? How do you establish democracy irreversibly? They had a plan: [...] use private property as the tool to build democracy in Russia. [...] If they could establish a class of property owners, those property owners would then demand protection from the courts to prevent it being taken away [then] they would demand laws in those courts and then they would demand that those laws be created in a fair manner, which would require a functioning legislature, which required functioning elections, and that required all the paraphernalia around elections. So, in this way, there is a logical chain which leads from "rapid privatization" to "free and fair elections".
[8:32] The problem with this plan is that it never had the chance of being implemented [because] the winners from the very early privatization auctions -- the people who got very rich in the 1990s -- managed to take the money out of Russia and putting it into London. So they didn't need rule of law in Russia, they didn't need democratic elections, they didn't need free and fair courts... because they could buy all that in London. [...] Instead of the oligarchs (as we now call them) being a temporary problem -- a necessary evil for building democracy and freedom in Russia -- they became [...] a colonizing class in their own country.
[10:14] London wasn't alone in the 1990s. Much of this money also flowed to Switzerland and New York, but in both of those cases there were serious investigations [...] which helped to limit the money flow. There was no equivalent in London.
[10:56] This has created a form of political economy which is unique among large countries, where [...] more than half of national wealth is housed outside Russia. The equivalent for European countries is about 10% and in the United States it's 5 or 4. Fifty-one percent of national wealth is outside Russia.
[12:03] That's kind of our fault. [...] How did Putin build the kleptocratic system, how did the oligarchs manage to steal everything? Because we helped them. We provided the legal services, the accounting services, we sold them property, we educated their children, we sold them fine art, we kept their superyachts, we provided them with taxation systems, we sold them golden visas, we helped them sue journalists who tried to write the truth about all this.
[13:36] We are stepping in to try and help the Ukrainians solve a problem that we caused.
[15:30] I've never got any sense that this was a deliberate policy. It's something that was profitable, and therefore no one was in the mood to ask too many questions. [...] There was a self-serving ideology -- which is not uniquely British, we see the same in Germany and other European countries -- that by trading with the Russians we would be civilizing them. [...] The idea that "what I want to do anyway, which is make money from these people, is not just good for me but good for everybody" is an incredibly convenient philosophy.
[21:25] There was an astonishing alliance between the Soviet Union -- specifically, its state bank Moscow Narodny Bank which was based in London -- and the Midland Bank [...] This was in the 1950s: the MNB decided to lend its dollars to Midland Bank and thereby discovered that if you use dollars in London, all the restrictions disappeared. [...] Before too long, it wasn't just Midland Bank doing it, but all the London banks, then other banks opened branches too: American banks, German, Japanese, French and so on. This was the birth of offshore finance [...] liberating the wealthy from the control of the rest of us.
[25:43] This willingness to profit from anybody is at the core of the reinvention of London from the capital of the British Empire to the capital of the Offshore Empire. That's why I refer to them as "butlers to the world".
[28:17] It's very difficult to pin down precise numbers, but it's clear that Russia is more unequal than it was on the eve of the first world war. The oligarchs now have a greater proportion of wealth than the aristocrats did under the tsar.
[30:46] There was a sense in Russia that the Europeans were incapable of uniting against the Russian threat, so it came as a shock in Feb '22 when that's precisely what happened. The UK, the EU, the US, Canada, Australia, Japan [...] paralyzed the mechanisms by which Russian oligarchs operated [...] so they've been seeking new mechanisms to get their money out of Russia. [...] Turkey has stepped in, and of course Dubai, which has a perpetual role in helping corrupt people get money out of their home countries.
[32:02] But that is only because of sanctions, and sanctions are a foreign policy tool. [...] There hasn't been in the UK -- or any other European country -- an adequate law enforcement response. [...] There's been a little work in the US and Canada, but very little done in this country, and that's a result of [our] disastrously underfunded law enforcement agencies.
[37:34] Ukraine, as people ceaselessly remind you, was (and probably is, in many ways) as corrupt as Russia [...] but what it doesn't have is a pyramid of corruption with one person at the top [...] Instead you have multiple warring clans [...] and in the cracks between these clans a civil society was able to appear in Ukraine. [...] In this pluralistic corruption, Ukraine was able to build this vibrant, powerful, horizontally organized society which is very different from the vertically organized Russian society.
[45:33] How do you de-radicalize someone like Putin? [...] I think that the only solution now is for him to lose, and sadly that will involve tens of thousands of young men's lives [...] because of the system that the oligarchs allowed him to create and the system that we in the UK allowed them to create. [...] That is a serious thing that we need to recognize and address, because [...] all the other kleptocrats are still bringing their wealth here: Chinese, Malaysian, Nigerian, whatever, it flows here uninterrupted. [...] This is an opportunity for us to examine what we've done [...] and make sure it never happens again.
[48:00] London as an offshore market is unrivaled. [...] You can get private school for your children in Switzerland, you can build opaque corporate structures in Dubai, but everything together in one place, the world-class financial system, the world-class legal system, a generous tax system, a huge art and luxury goods market, coupled with a network of tax havens -- no one else comes close. If London stopped being a center for kleptocratic wealth, it would destroy the global money-laundering system.
[52:04] Economics is not maths. You don't have to agree to it. The reason R has been greater than G over the centuries is because the rich have been able to capture politics. [...] We can fight back against that.

2023.05.29 13:33 greece666 Discussion of "The Battle of Algiers"
"The Battle of Algiers" is a critically acclaimed faux documentary inspired by “cinéma vérité” and directed by Gillo Pontecorvo. Released in 1966, it depicts a crucial phase in the Algerian War of Independence (1954-7). The film portrays events such as the FLN's (Front de Libération Nationale) bombings, assassinations, and the French military's efforts to suppress the insurgency.
The film received the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1966 and was nominated for three Oscars (Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Foreign Language Film). Over the years, it has continued to earn accolades, including being listed among the greatest films of all time by publications such as Sight & Sound and The New York Times. Edward Said famously claimed that “The Battle of Algiers” and “Queimada” (1969), Pontecorvo's next film, were the two greatest political films ever made. They indubitably paved the way for films such as Costa-Gavras “Z” and Theo Angelopoulos’s “Days of “36”.
The film was released a mere four years after the end of the Algerian War of Independence; it immediately became a subject of fierce controversy in France. The French government, under the conservative President Charles de Gaulle, was not supportive of the film due to its critical portrayal of French colonialism; as a result when Pontecorvo won the Golden Lion in Venice, the French delegation left in protest and the film was not screened in France until 1971. Even then, death threats by nationalists deterred cinema owners, and it was only through pressure from Louis Malle and other intellectuals that the film was eventually shown in French cinema.
The film portrays the profound repercussions that arise from challenging popular will through colonial means, such as military force and institutional discrimination. "The Battle of Algiers" emerges directly from the liberation movement it vividly captures. Following Algeria's independence in 1962, former fedayee (guerrilla) and captive of the French, Saadi Yaceft, approached Pontecorvo to adapt his memoirs into a film. The authenticity of the film’s foundation helped it to exude a striking realism rarely seen in political movies. The film's mournful tone and journalistic approach enabled Pontecorvo to reconstruct events on a grand scale, capturing the essence of the urban landscape of Algiers while also depicting intimate moments of ordinary people.
What adds to the power of the film is its ability to maintain a balanced and impassioned perspective by addressing the concerns of both sides of the war. The French colonel, who himself fought against the Nazis during the resistance, wonders why some intellectuals and the artists of France side with the Algerian rebels. However, there was a time when the colonel did not have to question why the Germans were unwelcome in his own country.
In Pontecorvo’s own words: "So many critics see “The Battle of Algiers” as propaganda, but in the scenes of death, the same religious music accompanies both the French and Arab bombings. I am on the side of the Arabs, but I feel compassion for the French even if historically they were at fault. I do not say the French were bad, only that they were wrong. [...] My subject is the sadness and laceration that the birth of a nation means in our time.” Undoubtedly, Pontecorvo, an Italian Jew who had previously been affiliated with the communist party and had fought as a partisan during World War II, did not garner favor among conservative circles.
Pontecorvo intricately wove together the technical aspects of the film, utilizing handheld cameras and black and white cinematography to convey an immediacy that plunges viewers into the heart of the conflict. The film's stark urban landscapes and the raw emotions etched on the faces of its characters are expertly framed, thanks to the cinematography of Marcello Gatti.
Gatti, the film's cinematographer, bore a leftist ideology and had endured imprisonment under Mussolini's dictatorship for defacing a portrait of Mussolini. With consummate skill, he adeptly captured the raw and captivating ambiance of the urban conflict portrayed in the film. His remarkable ability to navigate the labyrinthine, serpentine streets of Algiers and aptly depict the fervor of the clashes between the FLN and the French military heightened the film's tension.
Pontecorvo's approach to working with amateur actors is equally noteworthy. The performances of actors like Saadi Yacef, the aforementioned former FLN leader who portrays himself, are captivating in their authenticity. Pontecorvo's mastery in bestowing the film with the appearance of newsreel and documentary was so profound that American releases bore a disclaimer stating that "not one foot" of actual newsreel footage was utilized.
Jean Martin, a French actor who had only a modest number of screen credits to his name, was carefully selected by Pontecorvo to be the sole professional actor in the film, chosen for his relative obscurity and professional expertise. In his interactions with untrained performers, Martin occasionally faced challenges stemming from the disparity in experience. Pontecorvo, on the other hand, expressed apprehension regarding potential disparities in acting styles and their potential impact on the film's overall coherence. Nevertheless, Martin ultimately delivered a commanding portrayal as Colonel Mathieu, exuding the chilling resolve of the French military and effectively capturing the complexities of the conflict and the moral ambiguity surrounding the actions of the French military.
Indeed, Colonel Mathieu is the key figure of the movie and a complex anti-hero. Tasked by the French government with suppressing the Algerian uprising, he epitomizes the archetype of a resilient and seasoned professional soldier. Having earned his stripes as a veteran of the French Resistance, Mathieu exudes an unwavering demeanor devoid of any trace of irony. The film's most remarkable sequence revolves around Mathieu's commanding presence as he leads a triumphant parade along Algiers' main street. His intentions are twofold: to reassure loyal citizens of the French army's might in quashing the terrorists and to confront the terrorists themselves. With an air of casual ease, he radiates unwavering confidence, fully immersed in the spectacle he has orchestrated. Bathed in a dance of alternating shadows and sunlight, skillfully captured by Pontecorvo's masterful utilization of natural light, Mathieu's countenance becomes an indispensable component of the film's "newsreel" aesthetic.
Possibly the most cherished trivia about the movie is that it was screened at the Pentagon in 2003, prior to the invasion of Iraq. American generals were captivated by the film's unwavering candor in delving into subjects such as counter-terrorism, counter-insurgency, and the contentious employment of torture as a means of gathering information. General David Petraeus, who held command of the 101st Airborne Division at the time, lauded the film for its portrayal of the intricate complexities entailed in urban warfare and counterinsurgency. While this screening undoubtedly revitalized the film's iconic status, it appears that the attending officers failed to fully absorb Pontecorvo's profound insights, as evidenced by the course of the war in Iraq. Perhaps a revisiting of the film is in order for them.
"The Battle of Algiers" offers a cinematic odyssey that reaches far beyond its portrayal of the Algerian war. Its profound impact transcends the boundaries of that particular conflict, embracing a universal frame of reference that allows audiences to connect it to any war or struggle. The film's resonance stems from its profound ability to delve into timeless truths about the human condition and the harrowing ramifications of armed conflict, solidifying its status as a film of enduring relevance.
Pontecorvo's film has become such a powerful symbolic representation of the Algerian struggle that the untold stories of grassroots resistance can sometimes fade into the background, lost in obscurity. I'd like to suggest two more films which lack the laurels and recognition of the “Battle of Algiers” but shed light to lesser known aspects of the anti-colonial struggle in North Africa: “The Chronicle of the Years of Fire” and “The Lion of the Desert” (infamously funded by Libya's Colonel Gaddafy). If you're open to exploring movies that challenge your perspectives and offer historical insights, these two could be an interesting choice.
“The Chronicle of the Years of Fire” is an Algerian movie by Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina that won the Palme d’ Or in 1975: it shows the conflict through the eyes of a peasant while carefully depicting tribal life on the mountains of Algeria. “The Lion of the Desert” is an epic historical film directed by Moustapha Akkad with an impressive array of Hollywood stars, portraying the true story of Omar Mukhtar, a Bedouin leader who fought against Italian forces during the Italian colonization of Libya in the 1930s.
If interested in further discussing this film, you can join our Zoom discussion this Friday:

2023.05.29 13:32 evansproperty12 What Should You Look For When Choosing a Real Estate Management Provider?
A property represents quite a big investment. Thus, it must be properly managed to make sure that you get a steady return on this investment all your life. To help you out with this, there are scores of property management firms out there to select from. However, when every company claims to be the best and promises to offer quality services, choosing the best one is a hard slog, for sure. So, listed below are some of the things, which you should look for in a company, to ensure a good experience ahead.
estimated rental value tauranga Effective and aggressive marketing - Good tenants would not really come knocking at your door and begging for your property. Successful property management starts with finding good tenants and retaining the old ones. A good company makes sure that their customer's property never remains vacant for too long. The experts employed by them utilize various marketing techniques, to find genuine people to reside in your property. To advertise rental properties, they make use of both online as well as offline channels.
Excellent keep up - In order to retain the good tenants, property maintenance can work wonders. To make sure that the company, which you are intending to deal with, offers excellent keep up services, check out if they have contact with credible landscapers, snow removal experts etc. Also, see to it if they have any timeliness policy for major or small repairs. As best-kept properties significantly attract more tenants, it is important to hire someone who can boost up the appeal of your real estate.
Casual let service tauranga Good customer service - The Company you choose should always be available at the time of need. It should not be difficult to contact them if you have any concerns or questions to be answered by them. To know about how good they are in this department, you can ask for feedback from their previous customers. If they do not have a satisfactory track record, then it is better to move on with your search and try to find some other firm, offering excellent customer service.
Monthly statements - Being the owner of the property, you may wish to frequently know everything related to your real estate. A good firm keeps their customers well-informed with all the happenings, by submitting financial statements and itemized reports on a monthly basis. It is questionable, if a company fails to do so. Hence, again it is something that you must pay heed to.
rental appraisal tauranga Besides, the above mentioned things, there are more crucial things, which you cannot afford to ignore, such as the experience of the company. Some landlords hire an inexperienced company just for the sake of saving a few bucks, but often end up with low quality services. So, if you do not want to end up getting trapped into something like this, then go for only an experienced firm, as they would have the reputation, expertise and proficiency to give you what you need.

2023.05.29 13:31 HiigaranTheFirst Purchased an apartment. Suspecting the tenant won't vacate
After finding out the place I'm renting is planned to be demolished, I knew I had at best until the end of this year to find a new place. Given how stuffed the rental market is, I decided it's time to buy a place. Been working 90 hour weeks, spending as little as possible on living expenses, and pretty much put everything I have into this apartment.
The previous owner of the apartment was using it as an IP, so it's tenanted. The property manager and I had a quick inspection of the place, but there were already signs of the tenant being trouble. Doing what she can to refuse entry or delay inspection dates, and honestly being intimidating and borderline aggressive on the inspection. She was also clearly a druggie.
Given that this apartment was the only one that fit my budget and requirement of being close enough to where I work, I decided I was still interested in the place. There were to be two conditions to the settlement. First: The place would be vacant. Second: A final inspection of the apartment would take place after the tenant vacates. This was an important point, given the rushed first inspection, and the trouble she has been so far, I'm concerned about the potential state of the apartment after she leaves. Aggressive, troublesome addict seems like a recipe for disaster. So the inspection would be a safety net to negotiate the originally agreed upon price if the place is found damaged intentionally.
The solicitors went back and forth and requested an 8 week settlement to assist in giving the tenant enough time to find a place and move out, to which I agreed. The tenant was given a 30 day notice, which was extended by a week. I have just found out today that the tenant has extended by another week.
Two concerns here. First: Assuming the tenant leaves by the new date, this gives me exactly one business day to do the final inspection before settlement. If I find any issues and need to address them or negotiate the purchase price, would that be enough time? I've got late fee clauses of significant amounts if I don't finish the settlement by the agreed upon date. Which means if the settlement is completed, the money is transferred to the former owner, and there are issues with the apartment that take more than a day to discuss, where's my guarantee I can get any money back for repairs (or for repairs to be arranged by the former owner)?
Second: How far can this go? How many times can the tenant try to extend her stay? How quickly can she be forcibly removed if she refuses to go? What legal avenues are there, and how much would I potentially be looking at in costs? I'm afraid to keep contacting my solicitor as it seems like he is all too eager to charge any time I even think of contacting him. Like I said, I've gone all in on this apartment. I have almost nothing left.
As a side note, yes, I am aware how tone deaf this sounds to be worried about my housing situation while essentially threatening someone else's. This is unfortunately the best I can do for myself and those I look after in the long term.

2023.05.29 13:27 f_inola Recommendations for a bunny minder?
We are going away for a couple of days and have to leave our rabbit at home. He’s not great in the car so it would be by far our preference to leave him at home and have someone check on him 1-2 times a day for the 3 days we’re gone.
I’ve tried looking online but most of the results are for bunny boarding which is not as ideal. Anyone have any recommendations?
Thank you!

2023.05.29 13:27 JustinsSA Increased anxiety 3 days after upping dose.
Hey everyone, thanks for taking a moment to read this post.
So I have been on lexapro now for 7 weeks. I started lexapro because of a major panic disorder and agoraphobia.
I upped my dose from 10mg to 20mg 3 days ago due to my anxiety creeping back up.
While I was on 10 mg it did get to a point where I could better manage my panic attacks and anxious thoughts, but I have had a tonne of stress lately due to living arrangements and business which caused my anxiety to start creeping back up. With the advice given to me by my physiatrist we decided to up it to 20mg and see if it would help.
I started feeling on the edge of panic attacks again today and had a full blown panic attack while driving my car.
Can someone tell me if this is my body readjusting to the increased dose? I feel more mental clarity even on the 20mg but it’s the slightly increased anxiety and the panic attack today that just scared me a bit.
Thanks again.

2023.05.29 13:27 mammamia007 Mom, why do some women have a moustache?
Rush hours. My mom, toddler sister and I sit in a cramped subway car. We meet our cousin, a young female. A friendly chit-chat. My toddler sister is surprisingly quiet, but I notice that she stares at the cousin, closely examining her face. Finally, she loudly asks my mom (and the 100+ people around us):
- Mom, why do some women have a moustache?
Immediately, silence falls over our subway car. My mom blushes and says quietly that some facial hair is normal in women, and that sometimes it can be caused by hormonal imbalances.
- Mom, does (the cousin) have hormonal imbalances?
This was some 30 years ago, but this memory still makes me cringe - and wonder when a similar situation will happen again now that I'm a toddler mom myself :)
So, what's the cringiest thing your toddler has said in public? I want to be prepared.
