GWA Update:
As of 10 a.m., the Guam Waterworks Authority (GWA) provided the following update on water restoration progress:
Northern Region:
Currently 50% of operable wells are on-line
Northern water system is operating normally
More wells are being restored to island power as GPA continues to restore circuits
GWA continues to operate all available wells to increase reservoir levels throughout the northern system
Tumon and Tamuning have water, but low pressures persist causing outages in some areas until reservoir levels can be increased
Central Region:
Connection to Navy-supplied sources at Santa Rita-Sumai and Nimitz Hill has been restored
With the exception of Finile and Santa Ana areas, service was restored to Santa Rita-Sumai and Hågat
Talo’fo’fo main village has been restored, with minor outages being reported as crews are assessing for any line breaks
Service on Cross-island road area restored up to Our Lady of Peace
Southern Region:
Southern water system will operate at reduced capacity until damaged control equipment at the Ugum Surface Water Treatment Plant is resolved
Water services were restored from Ipan to Inalåhan
Main break repairs completed in Inalåhan
Restoration of Malesso’ and Humåtak is ongoing
GWA has deployed nine (9) 6,000 gallon Flexible Potable Water Tanks in:
Santa Teresita, Mangilao
Mongmong-Toto-Maite Mayor’s Office
Dededo Mayor’s Office
St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Inalåhan
Malesso’ Pier
Hågat Mayor's Office
Chalan Palauan, Dededo
Sinifa, Santa Rita
Mount Santa Rosa, Yigo
Additional tank deployments pending for other sites once additional containers and chassis are made available. Once the tanks are depleted, they will be refilled and returned to service at locations still without water.
At this time, the water tanks listed above are accessible 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Once the tanks are depleted, they will be refilled and returned to service at locations still without water. Residents island-wide who have water service are advised to conserve and limit use for cleaning, bathing, and cooking in order to conserve water to allow reservoir levels to increase.
As a precaution, water obtained from these designated locations must be boiled for at least three (3) minutes prior to consumption. A precautionary boil water notice remains in place due to possible bacterial contamination in the water that can occur when increased run-off enters a drinking water source following heavy rains.
Boil Water Notice Tips:
DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST.
Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for three (3) minutes, and let it cool before using or use bottled water.
Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice.
Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
For information, contact GWA’s 24/7 phone line at (671) 646-4211 or facebook.com/guamwaterworksauthority.
GTA Restoration Update:
GTA is actively working 24/7 on post-typhoon restoration. The core network is operational with stable off-island internet, but there are outages in wireless services in certain areas. Priority is given to larger sites serving residential and business customers. GTA is also prioritizing restoration to public safety and health facilities. However, the lack of island power and fuel shortages are causing some challenges for the restoration process.
To support customers, GTA is waiving disconnection fees and freezing disconnections until further notice.
Updated operating hours are Micronesia Mall (10AM-6PM) and GTA Support Center (7AM-7PM), while the GTA Experience Center and retail locations remain closed. For assistance, please contact the support center at 671-644-4482, visit

Docomo Pacific Restoration Update:
Docomo Pacific has been working with its technology crews to make island-wide assessments in Guam, Saipan, Tinian and Rota since Typhoon Mawar.
For Guam customers, the majority of cell sites did not suffer major damage due to Typhoon Mawar. The primary issue at this time is getting island power restored to the sites. Docomo Pacific is working closely with Guam Power Authority to restore services. Generators have been deployed at strategic sites to maximize coverage, and to ensure a stable power supply for as many mobile sites as possible.
The fiber network for southern villages supporting several mobile cell sites has sustained storm damage. This means that even if these sites were powered with a portable generator, there is no mobile service connectivity at this time. This is on the list of high priorities, along with restoration to public safety and health care facilities. No disconnections were announced until further notice, as well as no data caps for all mobile data customers and load-free prepaid service.
IT&E Restoration Update:
IT&E is working around the clock to restore services. Generators have been deployed to undamaged cell sites that can be accessed safely and that have connectivity to the network. Southern cell sites suffered significant damage from the typhoon. IT&E is unable to provide a timeline for restoration at this time, but is working to deploy a solution.
All prepaid subscribers get unlimited service, regardless of prepaid plan. Data caps have been lifted for all postpaid subscribers and tethering is available for all postpaid subscribers, free of charge. Service suspension due to nonpayment is postponed until further notice.
For the latest service updates, subscribers are encouraged to check IT&E’s official social media pages. Service-related issues can be reported by calling (671) 922-4483 or sending a direct message on official social media pages.

2023.05.29 04:47 JLGoodwin1990 If you ever think you see something peering at you from around a corner, ignore it
Have you ever had the experience of swearing you saw something at the edge of your vision, peering at you from around a corner before? I’m fairly sure a good chunk of people have, maybe even you reading this right now. Regardless of whether you’re in a crowded area such as a mall or school, or home by yourself, you’ve more than likely had that strange sensation of being watched, usually accompanied by a slight shiver down your spine. You’ll snap your head up from whatever it is you’re doing, or whoever you’re talking to. And nothing will be there. But, you always swear that, at the very edge of your vision, you saw something. A slight blur, as if something was there, but seemed to anticipate your move, and pulled back out of sight. I’m fairly certain most of you just end up shaking it off. You shake your head, telling yourself that nothing was there, and go back to what you were doing.
That’s a good thing. Because it’s what keeps you safe. It’s what keeps you alive.
Like many of you, for years, I always wrote seeing the slight blur at the edge of my sight off as a trick of my eyes. “Being so focused on one particular area that the rest of your vision goes fuzzy” as my mother once told me when I, as a child, told her I’d seen something at the doorway to my bedroom. And as I grew older, I simply took it as fact, the way every child takes their parent’s wisdom to heart. And once I became an adult, I simply waved it away completely.
That was, until one night.
You see, as a thirty-something year old bachelor who makes just above the line of adequate pay, I live by myself in a small, one bedroom apartment. It means having to live farther out from the city where I work, but I prefer living alone over not having to make the rather long drive to and from work every day. And, because my free time during the day is close to zero, I also am a bit of a night owl. This particular night, about three and a half weeks ago, I was up late, sitting at my kitchen table with my laptop out in front of me. I was surfing the net, looking for good deals on EBay for a new DVD/VCR combo since my old one broke, when the feeling came over me. The small, but noticeable shiver shot up my spine, and at the upper edge of my vision, just below where my hair began to drift into my eyes, I saw it.
It was a black and silver blur. At least, that’s what it looked like to me. I lifted my head quickly, looking towards the corner I’d seen it. My kitchen is in the back of the apartment, and where the table is set up, I was looking back out into the living room. The bedroom also sits next to the kitchen, and the wall separating the two stretches out a bit, causing a rather large blind spot from where I sat. Of course, when I looked up, there was nothing there. For a few more seconds, I simply sat, staring at the corner. Nothing moved. There was no sound except for the quiet whine of my laptop’s fan, and the hum of the fridge. I snorted. Really, Eddie? You’re jumping at shadowy blurs now? What are you, eight years old again? And with a shake of my head, I went back to the computer screen.
The hours seemed to pass by at an accelerated pace, and to my surprise, when I checked the clock at the bottom right of my laptop screen, the time said quarter to three in the morning. “Holy crap, I stayed up too friggin’ late!” I whispered to myself. I’d barely be getting four or five hours of sleep. And so, with a yawn, I shut my computer down and put it back into its carrying bag. As I stood up, though, a slight feeling of apprehension wiggled its way to the forefront of my mind. I lifted my head from zipping up the bag and again stared at the corner. This time there was nothing there. No blur at all. Recalling what my mother had told me years ago, I stood up and slowly stepped into the center of the kitchen, where I could see around the corner. I felt a small pang of embarrassment at the relief that washed over me as I saw nothing was there.
“What next, you gonna start believing in the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus again?” I muttered to myself. And with that, I entered my bedroom, shutting the door behind me and climbing into bed. For a moment, the image of the blur danced behind my eyelids. And then the sandman overtook me, plunging me into a deep and dreamless sleep.
The next day passed by like I was wading through quicksand. Of course, it likely had to do with how tired I was. But I got through the day, and soon enough, I was back home. This time, I resolved to get to bed before midnight. One AM at the latest. So I didn’t go on my computer. Instead, I watched some TV, and indulged myself in a few online matches in Battlefield 1. Soon enough, the clock sitting next to the TV displayed 12:35 in big red numbers. Alright, time for bed, I thought, and stood up, shutting off the TV and Xbox. I decided that I would get myself a drink before bed, and moved to the fridge. Opening it, I pulled a pitcher of juice out, and grabbing a glass from a nearby cabinet, poured myself some. The cold liquid felt good sliding down my throat, and I let out a relieved sigh. For a moment, I closed my eyes. Apart from the sound of a diesel truck passing by outside, and the ticking of the clock over the sink, all was silent. And I loved it. I placed the glass in the sink to wash tomorrow, and turned to take the pitcher back to the fridge.
And nearly dropped it at what I saw. As I turned around, I had a clear view across the kitchen and living room toward the small alcove where my front door sat. And for just a second, I saw the same black and silver blur, pulling back out of sight from the edge of my vision. Except this time, I know it wasn’t just a trick of my vision, or a strand of hair flashing in front of my face. “Hey!” I reflexively yelled out. I didn’t expect any response, and I didn’t get any. But now I knew for certain. There was something, or someone there. I felt my pulse rapidly quicken, and my heart began to beat like a drum against my chest. Fucking great, did someone decide to break in and try to burgle my apartment, of all places tonight? I looked around quickly for something to defend myself. My eyes fell upon the block holding all my kitchen knives, and moving quickly, I pulled the largest one out and turned back towards the entryway.
There was no movement now, but I noticed a change in the atmosphere. Gone was the simple, vacant air the apartment always held. Now, it seemed to contain a charge to it. As if seeing the figure had been something they hadn’t planned on. As if I weren’t supposed to have seen it. Probably figured I’d already be in bed. Well, they have a massive surprise coming their way. I cleared my throat. “You back there” I called out simply. Again, there was no reply. I spoke again. “Look, I saw you there peeking around the corner of the entryway. The jig is up. I don’t want a fight right now, so, I’ll make you a deal. If you turn around right now and leave, I won’t call the cops on you, and I won’t come at you with this knife. Just, go find someone else to rob, okay?”
Still, there was silence. But the tension in the room seemed to have racked up more than a few notches at my words. I waited for a minute, feeling my temper begin to flare. Does the dumbass seriously believe that if he stays quiet, I’ll believe he’s not there and go to bed or something? It wouldn’t be a surprise; the people who usually broke into houses and apartments in my neighborhood were usually strung out on the drug of choice for the week, or, in all truthfulness, simply not that bright. I let out an annoyed growl. “If I have to come over there to get, it’s not gonna end well for you” I said. At six feet even, and in good shape, I could easily take on whoever it was.
The silence was almost deafening. Okay, the hell with this, man. I strode quickly across the room, the knife held out in front of me in a vice like grip. I stopped for a moment, drawing in all my strength and reflexes. For a moment, though, an odd sensation seemed to wash over me like a wave. To my surprise, it was a bolt of fear. But, fear of what? Yes, it was a bit dangerous to about to confront a cornered intruder, but fear shouldn’t be one of the experienced emotions. Shaking it away, I put all the muscle into my legs, and leapt around the corner.
There was nobody there.
For a moment, I simply stood there, feeling dumbfounded. “Uhhh….what?” I blurted out. I knew for a fact I’d seen someone there. It hadn’t been a trick of my eyes. And I hadn’t heard the front door open. In fact, looking down at it now, I saw the little knob on the door handle was, in fact, twisted into the locked position. As I stared down at it, a sudden, huge shiver rushed up my spine, combined with the feeling of being stared at intensely. In fact, it almost felt as though whoever were doing the staring, were almost directly behind me-shit!
On instinct, I whirled around, slashing out with the knife as hard as I could. But again, there was nothing. No one stood behind me. The oddest thing, though, was that as soon as I spun around, the feeling of eyes boring into the back of my skull ceased. As if the watcher had simply blinked out of existence the moment I turned. But the tension in the apartment didn’t go away. In fact, it almost seemed to intensify. And it kept me on edge. Enough to the point that I searched the entire apartment. I went into the bathroom, drawing back the shower curtain. I went into my bedroom and opened up the sliding doors to the closet. I even opened up both closets in the living room, pulling out all the coats and boxes someone could hide behind. But I found nothing. No trace of anybody. Even still, though, when I went to bed, I locked the door to my bedroom behind me, just in case. And I slept with the knife on my bedside table.
The next morning, when I awoke, the feeling had vanished from the apartment. It was almost as if the daylight had banished the tension filled aura away, and I was glad for it. Along with the fact that I had a full day of work ahead of me. And so, with a final look around, I locked the front door behind me, climbed into my old, but well taken care of Mitsubishi Starion, and made the two and a half hour drive into the city for work. The day passed by without much fuss, aside from a mandatory team meeting my dickhead boss decided to impose on us during our lunch break. The monotony calmed me down somewhat, and I began to mentally tease myself for how bent out of shape I’d gotten last night. I even decided to tell some of the guys at the water cooler about it.
Everyone, of course, had a good laugh over it. “Well, Ed, if I ever need someone to slice away at the dark emptiness of my house, I’ll be sure to give you a call!” Mark, one of my coworkers joked, causing everyone, including myself, to guffaw some more. The joking shoved it completely out of my mind, and before I knew it, the evening had arrived. I packed up my belongings back into the car and made the journey back home, still chuckling a bit to myself and humming along to the songs playing on the car’s radio. As I pulled into my apartment building’s parking lot and into my space at close to ten at night, however, I saw something which tore away that relaxed, relieved emotion from me like it’d been a loved one in the grip of a tsunami.
My complex is set up in a U formation with two floors, sort of similar to how an older built motel looks. My apartment was the second one on the top floor, and from where I sat in my car, I could look up and see the living room window of my place between the slats of the walkway’s railing. As I always did, when I left, I’d twisted shut the white venetian blinds so nobody walking past the window could look into my place.
Someone was peering down at me from between the blinds. From between my blinds.
I felt my blood turn to ice as I saw the obvious parting in the middle of them, signifying someone was pulling down on a section of them. And then doubly so when they, just as quickly, snapped back into position. Shitttt, I mentally hissed. I fumbled around in my coat pockets, looking for my cell phone. I let out a groan as I suddenly realized I’d forgotten it when I’d left home that morning. Which meant it was up there. With them. “Shit” I hissed again, out loud this time. I gazed around for a moment at the darkened windows of the other units. But I knew none of my neighbors would be of any help to me. Long gone were the days of neighbors looking out for each other; they would, inevitably, tell me to either find a way to call the cops myself, or straight up tell me to go fuck myself, that it wasn’t their problem. Which, unless I wanted to drive straight to my local police station, over twenty minutes away, the only other option was…to go in myself.
Hissing through gritted teeth, I pulled the door handle and kicked the door open, letting the chilly night air flood into the car’s interior. I reached down and yanked on the trunk release before climbing out and slamming the door. Crossing to it, I pulled the glass hatch up and fumbled around inside for a moment, before withdrawing a tire iron from the mess of crap cluttering up the trunk. Slamming the hatch closed, I took a deep breath, then, leaving my car’s engine running in case I needed to make a quick getaway, I took the stairs to the top floor two at a time. A moment later, I was standing at the head of the landing, staring at the Tweety-Bird yellow painted door of my apartment. My heart pounded in my chest as I took a step forward, reaching out slowly and gripping the handle in one hand. I gave it a small twist to see if it would turn.
But it stayed in place, showing that the door was still locked. Or, whoever’s in there locked it behind them. Swallowing a bit, I reached into my pants pocket for my house keys with my free hand. Pulling them out, I slid them as quietly as possible into the lock in the center of the doorknob. I took a deep breath, knowing as soon as I twisted the key, the doorknob would turn with it as well. “God, please don’t let me get jumped as soon as I step inside” I quietly whispered towards the dark sky. I let out the deep breath, then raised the tire iron over my head and twisted the key.
The knob turned, and I immediately pushed the door open. It swung inwards, before hitting the wall with a soft clunk. The porch light cast a long, narrow shaft of light into the dark room beyond, reflecting off my flat screen TV on the far side of the living room. Aside from that, though, the place was as dark and silent as a tomb. My pulse quickened as I slowly reached inside, my hand searching for the light switch. Part of my feared that, as I blindly searched, I’d suddenly feel a vice like grip seize my wrist and pull me into the dark. The mental image sent a shiver of fear through me, just as my fingers found the plastic switch. Flicking it on, the living room suddenly became awash in the bright overhead light. Still holding the tire iron over my head, I took a tentative step inside. The atmosphere in here had changed again. Gone was the tense one which had accompanied seeing…whoever the other night. In its place was….an almost threatening one. And realizing it set me even farther on edge.
Moving quickly, I leaned around the corner, giving me a glimpse of the kitchen beyond. Both it, and the living room were empty, from initial appearances, anyways. But that still left the bathroom, and the kitchen. Something caught my eye, however, which filled me with relief. My cell phone still sat where I’d left it, in the middle of the living room coffee table. I moved slowly, trying to stay as quiet as possible so whoever was hidden wouldn’t realize I was going for my phone and bum rush me. I held my breath as I passed by the half open doors of both my bathroom and bedroom, stepping around the couch and picking up my phone. I decided right there and then, that I’d step back outside and call the cops. There was a fine line between being courageous, and being suicidally stupid, and searching this place on my own, with just a tire iron to defend myself, especially knowing someone was hiding somewhere in here, was firmly on the latter side of that line.
I turned to begin walking quickly back to the open front door. But something stopped me. Something which made me freeze. There was a small section of eggshell white wall between the door to one of my closets, and the bathroom door. Something had been written there. No, not written, I realized. It had been scratched into the wall. My eyes flashed over the three words etched into the paint and plaster. Videre nos potest. My head swam with confusion, trying to place what language it was. That was when I felt my heart almost stop in my chest, my breath along with it.
Out of the left corner of my vision, I saw the door to my bedroom had slowly, but noticeably swung open a bit. That wasn’t what had caused my heart to skip a beat, though. It was seeing the black and silver blur again. Ohhhhh, shit. Before the thought had finished in my head, I was dashing for the door. Out of the corner of my vision, there was a sudden blur of movement as the black and silver figure came flying out of the room. It never made a sound, though. I dodged it, somehow, and flew around the corner, snatching the doorknob in my free hand and yanking the door shut behind me. Twisting the keys to the right to lock the door again, I tore them from the lock and thundered back down the stairs, yanking the door to my car open and crashing into the driver’s seat. Slamming the door shut and locking it, I dropped the tire iron and fumbled with my phone.
As the voice of the emergency dispatcher came on the other end of the line, and I stumbled through explaining what had happened, I kept my gaze locked through the windshield on the front door and the living room window. I swear I saw the blinds part again as I heard the wail of the police sirens approaching.
When the police arrived, I jumped out of my car and quickly explained what had happened. They took my house keys from me and with their pistols drawn, climbed quickly up the steps to my place. With neighbors opening their doors and parting their blinds to see what was happening, they unlocked the door and quickly entered. A few minutes later, they both reappeared and waved for me to come up and join them. “I’m sorry sir, but whoever it was, they’re gone” one of them said to me. He then showed me that the window in the back of the apartment, which was in the back of the kitchen and opened out onto a main road, had been opened, the mosquito screen having been cut to allow someone to jump out. I stared out and down at the two story drop. It would hurt to jump from this height, but it’s doable, I thought. The cops again did a sweep of the apartment, turning the entire place upside down with me there, and again, found no one. They both promised to stay the night outside, to keep an eye on the place in case the person attempted to try and come back, and would make sure an officer was posted outside for the next week or so. It made me feel more than a bit better.
“What about the writing scratched into the wall?” I asked them, pointing to it. The first officer shrugged. “I honestly don’t know, sir” he said, giving me an apologetic look, “That’s a language I’ve never seen before” That’s when the second spoke up. “It’s Latin” he said simply. We both looked at him. He was staring at the writing with a bit of a confused, if not apprehensive look on his face. “But what freaking low level criminal knows Latin?” he murmured quietly, more to himself than us. “Well, what does it say?” I asked him. For a few seconds, he didn’t answer, then he finally turned and looked at me.
“He can see us. That’s, roughly, what it says”
I felt a massive chill shoot up my spine at his words, though I couldn’t understand why. Not at the time.
As promised, the officers watched over the apartment the rest of the night. And for the next week, there was always at least one cop car sitting outside. It was also, thankfully, quiet that next week. I was almost able to feel completely calm, putting the frightening experience out of my mind and allowing my life to regain a bit of normalcy. I didn’t feel any sensation of being watched. One thing I did do, though, was type the Latin words into Google, in an attempt to see if anything came up. But nothing did. I decided to push the last remnants out of my conscious mind. And as the weekend came, I looked forward to sitting on the couch, playing video games all night, and having a bottle of Hypnotiq to myself. Saturday night, I played until almost one in the morning, before stumbling my drunk ass to the bed. I passed out almost as soon as my head hit the pillow.
I’m honestly not sure what woke me up. But when I slid my eyes open, it was still to darkness. I felt my head begin to spin, showing that I wasn’t fully sober yet. I shot a look at the bright red glowing numbers of the clock on the bedside table next to my head. 3:30AM. Ugh, what the hell? Do I have to piss? What woke me u-
Everything stopped. My mind froze mid-thought, and my heart fluttered in my chest. My breath hitched in my chest as my eyes adjusted to the dark, staring across the room. I was looking at my bedroom closet, which, when I’d fallen asleep, I’d looked over and seen it closed. But now, as I stared, I realized the sliding right door had been pulled back some. A chill ran through me. And then it was replaced by a bone chilling shiver of fear as my eyes locked on to something else. Something which stared at me from around the edge of the half open closet door.
It was the black and silver blur. Except this time, it wasn’t a full on blur. I’m not sure whether it was the darkness or the alcohol still flowing through my veins, but…I could see it a bit more clearly now. I couldn’t see much. Just what looked like two large, very dark eyes, glaring at me. I felt frozen in place, fear quite literally paralyzing me to the bed. As I lay there, my eyes widened to the size of saucers, I slowly became aware of something else. Something which I’ll never forget, which I can still hear in the silence. It was whispering. It was a soft, hissing voice, sounding as grating as sandpaper, but it almost seemed to be growing in intensity. As if it knew I was awake and was staring at it. And it was not even remotely happy about it. The words were indistinguishable at first, but as the voice grew louder, the words became clear. But they weren’t words I knew. Or a language I knew.
“Tolle qui nos videre potest. Tolle qui nos videre potest. Tolle…qui nos videre potest!” I recognized some of the words as the same as the words written on my wall. It was speaking in Latin. The voice grew angrier and angrier, turning from a hiss into almost a demonic growl. And then, it went deadly silent. It almost seemed as though the entire world had gone dead silent, as if everything were being sucked out of the world.
That’s when I saw the hand reach up from underneath the bed to grab onto the sheets, less than a foot from my face. A hand which more resembled a claw, tipped with five razor sharp fingernails. There’s more than one….and it’s under my fucking bed!
Seeing that hand…that claw reaching up from under the bed broke the paralyzing hold that had come over me. I flew up in bed, flinging the sheets up and forwards and letting out an involuntary scream. Instantly, there seemed to be a world of motion in the bedroom. Black and silver blurs seemed to appear from everywhere. From the closet, from under the bed. Even from inside my armoire I used to store candy, books and CDs. And they were all coming for me.
But I was already moving, practically flying for my open bedroom door. Behind me, I caught the blurs following after me. They were terrifyingly fast, but they stayed silent. Silent, that is, except for the mantra they all suddenly began to angrily whisper. The same words I’d heard the one in the closet angrily hiss. “Tolle qui nos videre potest!” they chanted, just loud enough for me to hear. But not enough for anyone else in the complex to. I ran through the bedroom door, grabbing it and slamming it shut behind me. A moment later, I felt the push from the other side as whatever the things were attempted to force it open. Looking around, I spied a kitchen chair within reach and grabbed it, forcing it under the handle to block the door.
I knew it wouldn’t hold for long, though. I could hear the creatures practically throwing themselves at the door. I used the time I had to grab my computer bag, along with the clothes I’d left strewn on my living room floor and my cell phone. I’d just snatched my car keys from their hook, when I realized they’d gone silent. The assault on the door stopped. For a split second, I felt a wave of relief. And then I saw something out of the corner of my eye from the kitchen. My blood turned to ice as I realized the cabinet doors under the sink were beginning to open. And that demonic growl of a mantra was beginning to pour out from under it. So was my bathroom door. And both closets. “Oh, fuck me” I whimpered, then dashed for my door, snatching up my sneakers as they rushed out from their new hidey holes.
I unlocked and threw the door open, dashing out into the night and yanking it shut behind me. Bolting down the steps, I jammed the key into the door of my car and unlocked it. I piled into the driver’s seat and yanked the door shut, slamming down on the lock button. Forcing the key into the ignition and twisting it, the engine roared to life. I knew I should simply call the cops, but I knew at this point, if I did, when they arrived, they’d all have disappeared. Maybe even make it look like another person had jumped out the window again They're THAT smart. Instead, I jammed the shifter into reverse and peeled out of the parking lot. As I left, I saw the blinds part again. As they watched me go.
I haven’t been back to my apartment in weeks. I drove all through the night, fighting back the waves of nausea from the alcohol still in my system until I made it to the city where I work. I rented a motel room, and ever since then, I’ve been staying there. I figured I could just eventually have movers go and collect my things from the apartment, and give my thirty day notice. There was no way I was ever going back there.
I thought I would be safe in the city. I thought I would be safe anywhere else but my apartment. That they were bound to the place.
I was wrong. So very wrong.
Because I’ve started seeing them everywhere now. I’ve seen them while out in crowded places such as the mall or Wal-Mart. I’ve seen them in my coworker’s houses when I’m invited over by them as they tell me they’re concerned about how I’m beginning to act. I’m even seeing them at work. Peering at me from around the corners of hallways, from behind the water cooler. I’ve even caught them glaring at me from around the corner of my office cubicle. They whisper that horrible Latin mantra to themselves, now added with evil chuckles. And whisper it to me. I ended up entering the phrase into Google Translate, to understand what they were saying. But wish I never had. Because knowing meaning of the words fills me with an existential dread and terror I’ve never felt before.
Take away he who can see us
You need to listen to me now. You, reading this account I’m posting. I don’t know what these creatures are. I wish I did, because then, I might have some way of fighting back against them. I don’t even know what they fully look like. I’ve only seen their eyes. And their clawed hands. The only thing I can deduce, is that they are incalculably old. Centuries old. Maybe even eons. I now understand that those blurs I saw all throughout my life, from the corner of my vision, were them. They’ve lived alongside us for all of humanity’s existence, staying just out of sight. They like it that way. They don’t like us humans knowing about them.
But I know others, not just myself, have likely seen them.
How many strange cases of people disappearing in their homes, with all the doors and windows locked from the inside have you heard about. I know I’ve heard more than a few. And I think I know what happened to them. They saw these creatures. And when they realized the people could see them? They came for them. They wore them down, mentally and physically. Like they’re doing to me now. I’m afraid to fall asleep. Afraid I’ll wake up to see them right in front of me. I feel so weak now. I couldn’t fight them off if I tried. They know that. They knew that about the others. And that’s when they dragged them away….to God only knows where.
I know I'm going to find out soon enough.
Because all of today, they’ve been getting closer. I caught one trying to grab my leg under my desk. That wasn’t the scariest encounter I’ve had. The worst was driving back to the motel. Looking in the rear view mirror of my Starion. And seeing one of them glaring at me from just behind the rear seat. It caused me to nearly crash into a telephone pole. I’ve locked myself in my motel room, which is where I’m writing this. I don’t have much time left. They’re beginning to poke their heads out from everywhere in here. Multiple have popped their heads up from under the bed, watching me frantically typing this out on my laptop. And they’re all laughing at me. Today is when they're going to take me. They know I know that. I can’t do anything more now. I can’t run from them anymore. I’m too tired. Too weak.
But I can do one final thing. I can warn you. I can post this account here as a warning. I know for a fact most of you won’t believe me. And that’s fine. It may even be what saves you in the end.
But please, listen to me when I say this. If you ever think you see something peering at you from around a corner? If you ever catch a glimpse of a black and silver blur disappearing just out of sight? Don’t investigate it. Just ignore it. Tell yourself it’s nothing, and go about with your lives.
Because you don’t ever want them to realize you can see them.

2023.05.28 22:01 HeywoodDjiblomi Barcelona, such value
Had a recent trip to Barcelona, and was absolutely floored with the value compared to the US.
What I'm used to: Based in Miami, ATL. Got into hobby last year, started off by getting scammed big by 2 girls at Club E11ven. Transitioned to strip club circuit like Tootsies. My best exp there was a dayshift Cubana a 10/10 enhanced brunette for $500/30 min VIP, all covered action, no GFE or kissing. Focused more on ATL clubs, started getting 8-9/10 Latinas for $400/30 min. Learned more, now I'm consistently $270-$300/30 min with still hot girls, although just basic service. My absolute best was this Lana Rhoades look alike Italian American stripper, $300/30 min at her hotel. Kissing & BBBJ included (she's long since diseappeared). Eventually tried Amsterdam 2x and loved it. While I hear its lost its hey day, but for me I love the fast food McDonalds approach for Red Light District, 100-150E/30min with wiggle room, and the convenience to check out the goods right there in a fun safe city.
Onto Barcelona, 7 providers, all I finished with CF&S. Tools: Sexmercadobcn, independent providers post there and the forum links reviews for many providers. Blurred faces so I stuck with recent/highly reviewed girls. Tip: Schedule to be the girls' first session if possible. I find they're fresh as can be.
Ana & Ashley. I made 2 separate appointments in the morning. Both are mid/late 20's, blondes, enhanced pornstar bodies (big fake tits, BBL) but are very high quality and well done. Each with a unique and sexy face (Ana is Polish, Ashley is Canary Islands), absolute 10s to me. Both were responsive via Whatsapp and hosted in their clean apts in nice part of icy -Ana: was 150E for 60 min, Ashley 250E for 60 min. Both included much french kissing, BBBJ, and GFE despite some language barrier. I didn't push for CIM. Ashley was fantastic, but Ana was far more economical & as good. -Near half the price, 2x as long, and in the comfort of a safe, clean room with a bed and not some uncomfortable club, as well as extra. To me, its 4x the value
Mia: Used the Eden private brothel. Messaged them from their Sexmercado page. Very responsive, the rooms are ok but harsh from fluorescent lighting. Mia, a mid 20s Venezuelan. 9/10 in looks, youthful perky, stacked Latin body with tasteful fake tits. Performance was average. Submissive which I like, included BBBJ, but no GFE, kissing, and she rushed the session. Knowing Spanish would've helped. -120 Euro ($130) for 60 min. Still one of my local clubs girls will charge you that just for 6 air dances.
Denise/Sugar Girls: This is a private discrete brothel, but they have website. Lots of turnover of girls so availability is inconsistent and reviews arent deep. They were very responsive via Whatsapp, similar nice part of town. Rooms are nice, with shower. They do edit their photos, while my girl was still hot she's slightly better on the site. I advise a lineup every time, I'd get 8 or 10 girls and only want to pay for 2 or 3. Dennise is this all natural tattooed girl from Bilbao. Perky pierced B cups, thick fit trunk, built like a softball player with a face like Juelz Ventura. Lots of kissing, but CBJ this time. -150E/60 min. Great fun personality, felt like a party.
Alice/TeensBCN: Another popular private brothel. Same deal, whatsapp, responsive, nice part of town. Rooms were like a motel/dorm room. Alice is a Greek girl with great English, plain faced but feminine, large breasts with natural low hang on her mid 20s body. Like a smaller version of Gianna Michaels. Because of no language barrier, we clicked, she made it feel like a true fun flirty hookup as if I took her from the bar. Kissing, GFE, BBBJ included. -Around 120E for 60
Forgotten named Cuban & Lena/Maison Close: My first public brothel. Just walked in, a discrete initial door in a quiet, nice part of town but you see the branding once in. Nicest rooms of them all, spacious, nice shower. Cuban: Blonde slim Barbie bimbo, body a 9, face a 7.5. Good CBJ, deepthroated. No GFE, kissing. But still a good experience. Lena: My final girl the night before my flight home, wow addicted to her. An early 20s spinner Uruguayan, with big soft juicy fake tits, slender frame but still had curves to her ass. Because of our heights, leverages were great. Even after days of 2 sessions a day, and 1 that morning with other girls, I knew within 10 min this girl was electric. I will be requesting her specifically next visit.
Barcelona for me has been the perfect monger city. It's a great place to visit as is, food is great, not expensive if you travel smart. Most of year is decent weather. Then you have 20+ options from big public brothels to independent girls all with 15 min of you. If I lived in Europe I'd been in Barcelona & AMS every other weekend and still be less money than what I'd need to spend in the US. If they werent $1800+ flights through winter, I'd probably never use a US provider again.
Future targets, would stick to clubs as a first timer. Frankurt: Sharks Oase. Just learning about FKK clubs and seems like an easy 2-3 day bender. Vienna: Wellcum, technically 3 hr drive from Vienna. Would need 4-5 days but another well reviewed FKK where you can stay in their hotel included." Sao Paolo: Scandalo
Going to Colombia very soon and will post on that. Santa Fe and escorts. Feel free to DM if questions or to talk shop

2023.05.28 10:44 alkaline-earthsuit2 thinking about moving to New Mexico Albuquerque or Santa Fe anyone have personal experience?
I'm in Kansas and over the stupid laws just enacted. Want to get gender marker changed a legal documents done . I know new Mexico is a state that just passed some protective laws . Curious as to job availability for blue collar .Manufacturing, c.Construction,Interior design stuff like that as I have experience in those areas. I know Santa Fe seems like a chill place , Thoughts on Albuquerque . I can manage income as long as jobs are available If you have lived or are currently living there do you like it ? How are people in general any kinda of feedback is greatly appreciated . Also open to other states as well I however do not like cold weather .Kansas winters are plenty bad enough. Hence why I don't just go to Colorado , Minnesota, upper east coast ,side note been looking at Washington State as well . I've lived in Ventura county California. It's just not for me. I know I'm probably reaching at this point giving the circumstances as community we are in at the moment just trying to gauge options and know personal experience is generally better than a few online searches .

2023.05.28 03:50 oO_Pompay_Oo Opportunities for small dance groups in Vancouver and Vancouver area
Good day everyone! I recently moved here from Alberta and have been interested in looking for opportunities for small dance groups to perform. Back in Alberta we had several summer street festivals, winter festivals, event center shows (like Taboo), malls, etc. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations of where I should look to connect with local places or events to perform at? My particular dance style is called Improv Team Sync. It's a fusion style of Belly dance, Hula, HipHop, and more. I can literally dance to any style of music with this dance format. A huge thank you in advance!

2023.05.28 03:00 Jean_dodge67 Post-Uvalde transparency bill moves forward after late-session holdup by Lieutenant Governor
https://www.valleycentral.com/news/texas/post-uvalde-transparency-bill-moves-forward-after-late-session-hold-up-by-lieutenant-governo Story and video from KXAN, but for some reason it's hit "the googles" first here at another NBC affiliate.
Busy last 48 hours at the lege -today's House impeachment vote, 121-23 against the AG Ken Paxton is rather incredible - but this is significant legislation and it looks like it may be moving forward.
I'll believe it when the governor signs it and it becomes law, and I don't trust the GOP one damn but but at least for now there is news signaling positive movement on a bill, House Bill 30, that would do a lot to bring truth and transparency for the people of Texas and the famous of Uvalde. This has been tyears in the making and untold hours spent lobbying and advocating for this measure, which merely makes the Open Records Act do what it was meant to di un the first place before corrupt law enforcement agencies found a dirty loophole.
AUSTIN (KXAN) — Despite hitting a last-minute snag in the final full week of the legislative session, a years-long fight to close a controversial legal gap known as the “dead suspect loophole” is still moving toward the Texas governor’s desk. This development comes days after the one-year anniversary of the Uvalde mass shooting that killed 19 children and two teachers, which put a spotlight on the importance of public records, transparency and the truth.
“We’ve agreed to the changes that would make this bill operational and the House conferees have signed off on that,” Rep. Joe Moody, D-El Paso, who authored the bill and has been trying to close the loophole for years, said earlier Friday. “So, we’re simply waiting to see what happens.”
The holdup had been Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, according to several sources with inside knowledge. KXAN reached out Friday to his office to ask about the status of the bill but did not immediately hear back.
The “dead suspect loophole” refers to an exemption in the Texas Public Information Act that gives police discretion to withhold records from the public in cases where a suspect doesn’t go through the court process. It has been used to block records from being released in cases where a suspect dies in police custody.
House Bill 30 passed both chambers but changes made by the Senate were rejected this week by the House. That stalemate triggered the need for a conference committee to hammer out an agreement. The House appointed its five members earlier in the week, but three days passed before Patrick appointed the Senate’s five members. Legislative sources tell KXAN Patrick, who presides over the Senate, had been refusing to appoint that chamber’s conferees despite both sides reportedly reaching an agreement on a final version to send to the governor to be signed into law. However, just hours after KXAN investigators first reported the holdup, the Senate conferees were posted, and the legislative process was once again moving forward
And there is more, this is jsut the lede paragraphs but the devil will be in the details. This bill was one point was utterly gutted to where it was only going to help the parents of Santa Fe gain access to autopsy reports, I'd head but now it seems like it is back with most of the provisions intact. I wouldn't be surprised to find they inserted another loophole, but I guess we are going to find out soon enough. I want my lawyer to read this...

2023.05.27 04:09 sesamesticks Trip Summary: 7 days in Costa Rica (Tamarindo, Monteverde, La Fortuna, Liberia)
Got back from a 1 week trip to Costa Rica and wanted to summarize my thoughts here as a few friends have asked for them.
Tamarindo, 2 nights Scene: Young and touristy with a lot of surfing though during low tide you'll actually see that the beach is full of jagged rocks - my friend actually cut himself on them. Plus the waves were pretty aggressive when I was there which makes surfing even tougher for beginners. Great for partying - at least on the Friday and Saturday night I was in Tamarindo there were several bars and clubs. That said, I've heard that folks who stayed in other popular beach towns like Santa Teresa and Nosara enjoyed it more.
Things to do: Bar crawl ($25 USD) was pretty fun and Crazy Monkeys was my favourite spot as it was a rooftop club with acrobatics (think: a very, very scaled down version of Coco Bongo). Cheap surf lessons at Banana Surf Club, $20 or 30 USD for 2 hours. Not much to do from an outdoors/adventure perspective.
Food: Tough to find cheap local options as the Sodas are not walkable from the center of town. The food options were pretty westernized. The Mahi Mahi tacos from Green Papaya Cafe were my second favourite meal. Witches Rock had a cool vibe with live music and it's beach front patio. Tried several places in the small food court but they ranged from mediocre to bad. The Carribean food truck in the food truck yard was terrible as the meat is literally microwaved. Heard good things about the food at El Be and coffee at the shop above White Lotus but didn't try myself.
Transportation: Shuttle from airport for $25 USD each (1 van shared with 4 others)
Monteverde/Santa Elena, 2 nights Scene: Quite literally in the mountains. Much quieter and sparse vs the other places in Costa Rica. Great for outdoor adventures, renowned for coffee, and most notably the home of a large cloud forest reserve, etc.
Food: CASEM co-op was quaint and the tortilla with meat was decent. Raulitos was decent as well. Sabor Tico was highly recommended by the locals but I thought it was disappointing (plus very expensive). Cafe Choco was a great place for coffee (though contrary to the name, they do not make chocolate).
Things to do: Between 100% Aventura (which I did for $54 USD), Selvatura, and Extremo, there's lots of great ziplining/Tarzan swing excursions available and I'd highly recommend doing one of them. I would ignore any claims like "largest zipline in Costa Rica" because I saw several ziplines throughout the country making similar but nuanced claims. Night walks are also popular but the one I did ($25 USD purchased at the Selvatura office in town) was terrible - saw a couple interesting animals from afar but was otherwise underwhelmingly focused on bugs (read: boring) and I didn't like the guide. Didn't visit the cloud forest or do a coffee tour but those are the other popular things to do here.
Transportation: Shuttle for $50 USD (van with ~6 others)
La Fortuna, 2 nights Scene: Typical tourist town (not necessarily in a bad way) that felt like a hybrid of all the other places I visited in Costa Rica. Has a good variety of things to do ranging from quiet outdoor activities to partying. As has been well documented here on Reddit, you have to pay for pretty much every hike though there are a small handful of free activities.
Food: My favourite meal in Costa Rica was at Travesia. While the prices appear high, each meal we got could have probably fed 2+ people. A must try. A close contender because of its low price was Pollolandia, which is a no-frills fried chicken chain located throughout the country. Rain Forest Cafe was decent. Soda Viquez is highly recommended and definitely filling but the food is very low quality and served from a hot table that has likely been sitting all day - I didn't like it.
Things to do: My favourite activity during my trip was the level 3-4 rafting ($85 USD). It was my first time and a ton of fun, especially for those who like high adrenaline activities. The river level was a bit low though which led to us getting stuck a lot. We hiked through the private Volcano Arenal for $18 USD which was a pretty decent hike though you don't actually get too close to Volcano itself. There's a vendor in the parking lot selling cheap fresh coconuts (1,200 CRC) which was a great refresher after the hike. We also did the La Fortuna waterfall for ~$20 USD which was beautiful. The Don Juan coffee and chocolate tour ($45 USD) which was nice as well, though someone later suggested the Northfields one could be better because it's less "corporate" than Don Juan. Partying, at least on the weekdays that I was here, was pretty limited. Charlie's was the only place open during the week but pretty empty. Drinks were cheap though (~3,000 CRC per). In terms of free activities, there's a great swimming area with a rope swing, an okay hot spring a short walk from the road, and a free waterfall that I didn't get to visit. Also, on the trip from Monteverde>La Fortuna our shuttle service had us switch from bus>boat>bus again which we didn't know would happen upon booking but actually made for a nice, makeshift boat tour around the Arenal Volcano
Transportation: Shuttle for $50-70 USD (don't remember the exact amount) (bus/boat with ~12 others)
Liberia, 1 night I know everyone says to skip it but I had an early morning flight the next day and wanted to be close to the airport. Next time, I think I'd just stay in a nearby beach town like Playa Hermosa instead which is equally far from the airport. Not much to do and my Airbnb on the south side of town felt a bit sketchy. This is more specific to the Airbnb itself but despite the great reviews it was terrible - flooded during heavy rainfall, bad smells, and lots of bugs. Cafe Negro was great for breakfast and coffee, though. Also if you're flying from this airport beware that alcohol at the souvenir shops is significantly overpriced. There's a smaller duty free shop near gate 5 that sells the example same products for much less (e.g. 750ml Cacique for $15 vs $23 USD)
Transportation: Private driver (shuttles were sold out as we tried booking the day before) for $115 USD (SUV with up to 4 seats and the cost can be split by all passengers; driver also stopped at Rio Celeste, a popular river to swim in, on the way)
Other, general thoughts: - Everything, especially food, is VERY expensive. Outside of Airbnbs and alcohol, I paid more for things in Costa Rica than I would in Canada. I ate out for all my meals and paid ~double what I would normally spend eating out at similar places where I'm from in Canada. Same goes for coffee (~2,000-3,000 CRC) and other general merchandise items, but food was especially surprising given that even basic meals like casado (read: rice and bean heavy) would run me ~5,000 CRC.
- In addition to being expensive, food is pretty underwhelming here. I guess that was to be expected as Costa Rica isn't exactly a culinary destination.
- Alcoholic drinks from corner stores were pretty cheap (e.g. ~1,000 per beer, ~7,000 for 750ml bottles of liquor), at least compared to Ontario (perhaps not as noticable if you're from a low alcohol tax area in the US, let's say). Alcohol at restaurants and bars was generally expensive though.
- Tipping was not expected anywhere I went. Some places, particularly fancier restaurants, do mandate a service charge though, a standard 10%.
- With the exception of my night walk guide who sucked, all the tour guides were great and funny. Even the guides that were not great English speakers knew how to crack jokes.
- I imagine it's an anomaly but it only rained once despite my trip taking place during rainy season.
- If you're used to eating properly marbled steaks, I'd skip eating steak in Costa Rica. It's generally lean and tough, very different from the fattier steaks we're used to.
- Tap water is safe to drink. I drank it everyday without issue.
- Navigating is really challenging because they don't use addresses here. It's all relative to landmarks (e.g. 50m West of large statue).
- Partly due to above but also because the roads between cities can be terrible, I'd recommend avoiding driving. Perhaps if you're from a region without modernized roads then you'd be okay with it but fully paved roads, stop signs, cross walks, street lights, etc are rare outside of the big cities.
- Uber is illegal (for drivers, not passengers) so in some less populated areas it can be hard to match with drivers. Still worth trying to call for them if you're not in a rush because it was ~50-70% cheaper than taxis (regardless of whether we had fixed price or meter). That said, taxis show up very quickly if you call them.
- Related to the previous thought, I was amazed by how easy it was to book transportation around the country through shuttles/private transport. Even on very short notice, we paid someone at a hostel or tour agency who leaves a Whatsapp voice message with a very vague description of your party/pickup location (again, no addresses), and in every single case the driver showed up right on time. Never tried public transportation but I heard it's to be avoided if you can afford it. Shuttles/private transport can also be booked online. We used Bookaway which seemed standard.
- For some reason you can't convert foreign currency to CRC at banks without showing your passport.
- Outside of a few small things irking me in Liberia, the country generally felt safe, even when walking around Tamarindo and La Fortuna at 2-4am in the night.
- Tourists are tourists but the locals generally felt pure and nice, truly embodying the essence of "Pura Vida". These aren't great examples but I saw several things (e.g. bumping into people at clubs) that in North America would lead to a fight that the locals just brush off.
- Last but not least, and partly a product of hanging around hostels (even if I wasn't staying in them), it was very easy to meet and make friends with other people. There were plenty of people ranging from solo to small groups, backpackers to more mature travelers, coming from near and far countries, and so on. A very different vibe than in North America where it's almost taboo to start up a conversation with someone at a restaurant or on a tour - I was able to meet a diverse array of people just by striking up conversations!

2023.05.26 22:25 JoshAsdvgi Sacheen Littlefeather (( Marie Louise Cruz ))
| Sacheen Littlefeather (( Marie Louise Cruz )) Marie Louise Cruz (born November 14, 1946), known as Sacheen Littlefeather, is an Apache actress and activist for Native American rights. On March 27, 1973, she represented Marlon Brando at the 45th Academy Awards to decline the Best Actor award for his performance in The Godfather. The favorite to win, Brando boycotted the ceremony in protest of Hollywood's portrayal of Native Americans and to draw attention to the standoff at Wounded Knee. During her speech, the audience was divided between jeers and applause. Half-Native American (both White Mountain Apache and Yaqui) and half-white, Littlefeather had sought to become an actress. She was involved in the 1969 occupation of Alcatraz and learned about her heritage. After the Academy Award speech, she worked in hospice care, continued activism for a number of health-related and Native American issues, and produced films about Native Americans. Early life and career Sacheen Cruz Littlefeather was born Marie Louise Cruz on November 14, 1946, in Salinas, California. Her mother was a leather stamper from Phoenix, Arizona, of French, German, and Dutch descent. Her father was a child of an alcoholic father who beat him and he grew up in foster homes, among relatives, poor, and suffered from a tumor on his hearing nerves resulting from loud head noises. He later met her mother as a saddle Maker in Arizona. Her father died of cancer at 44 years of age in 1966 and is buried at our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Salinas. A tombstone was erected in his honor by his wife's request and placed by their youngest daughter. The Church is now a historical monument by the Monterey Historical Society. Her mother and two sisters were subject to their father’s rage & beatings. Her father was born in the desert and is from the White Mountain Apache and Yaqui tribes. The couple moved to California while her mother was pregnant. They opened up their own business. "Cruz Saddlery" and her parents are also remembered in Salinas Valley. She was primarily raised by her maternal grandparents, Marie and Barney, and was Catholic as a child. Sometimes she lived with her mother; she recalls a trip through Mississippi when she was told to use the "black" water fountains and a sign that read, "No Dogs or Indians Allowed". While she attended California State College at Hayward (now California State University, East Bay), she continued to look into her Native American identity. In Oakland, she worked with the Intertribal Friendship House. In 1969, she became a member of Indians of All Tribes and participated in the occupation of Alcatraz, when she adopted the name Sacheen Littlefeather. She learned more about Native American customs from elders and other protesters. On a full scholarship to the American Conservatory Theater, she began acting education. Aspiring to become an actress, Littlefeather picked up several radio and television commercial credits and joined the Screen Actors Guild. In 1970, she was named Miss Vampire USA, a promotion for Dark Shadows. Playboy magazine planned a spread called "10 Little Indians" in 1972, and one of the models was Littlefeather, but Playboy editors cancelled its publication due to the Wounded Knee incident. A year later in October 1973, after her Academy Award appearance fame, they ran the photographs of Littlefeather as a stand-alone feature. Littlefeather was personally criticized for what was seen as exploitation of her fame. Looking back at the photo shoot, Littlefeather later said, "I was young and dumb. Academy Awards speech, 1973 Littlefeather got in contact with actor Marlon Brando through her neighbor, director Francis Ford Coppola. She wrote Brando a letter, asking about his interest in Native American issues, and he called the radio station where she worked a year later Brando had worked as an activist with the American Indian Movement (AIM) since the 1960s and into the 1970s. In Washington, D.C., where Littlefeather was presenting to the Federal Communications Commission about minorities, they met and found in common their involvement with AIM. In 1972, Brando played Vito Corleone in The Godfather, which is considered one of the greatest films of all time. For the performance, he was nominated for Best Actor for the role at the 45th Academy Awards, which were presented on March 27, 1973, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, California. But before the ceremony, Brando decided that – as the favorite to win – he would boycott as a protest led by AIM against the ongoing siege at Wounded Knee and his views on how Native Americans were represented in American films. He called Littlefeather and asked her to appear on his behalf. "I was a spokesperson, so to speak, for the stereotype of Native Americans in film and television," she later said. At the ceremony Littlefeather joined the audience minutes before the award for Best Actor was announced. She was accompanied by Brando's secretary, Alice Marchak, and wore an Apache buckskin dress. Producer Howard W. Koch, she would later say, told her that she had 60 seconds to deliver the speech or else be removed from the stage; she had planned to read a 4-page speech written by Brando. The Best Actor award was presented by actors Liv Ullmann and Roger Moore. After giving brief remarks and announcing the five nominees, they declared Brando to be the winner. Littlefeather walked on stage and raised her hand to decline the Oscar trophy that Moore offered her. Deviating from the prepared speech she clutched, she said the following: Hello. My name is Sacheen Littlefeather. I'm Apache and I am president of the National Native American Affirmative Image Committee. I'm representing Marlon Brando this evening, and he has asked me to tell you in a very long speech which I cannot share with you presently, because of time, but I will be glad to share with the press afterwards, that he very regretfully cannot accept this very generous award. And the reasons for this being are the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry – excuse me [boos and cheers] – and on television in movie re-runs, and also with recent happenings at Wounded Knee. I beg at this time that I have not intruded upon this evening, and that we will in the future, our hearts and our understandings will meet with love and generosity. Thank you on behalf of Marlon Brando. [applause] Moore escorted Littlefeather off-stage, past several people critical of her, and to the press. At the press conference, Littlefeather read to journalists the speech that Brando had prepared; The New York Times published the full text the next day. That Unfinished Oscar Speech By MARLON BRANDO For 200 years we have said to the Indian people who are fighting for their land, their life, their families and their right to be free: ''Lay down your arms, my friends, and then we will remain together. Only if you lay down your arms, my friends, can we then talk of peace and come to an agreement which will be good for you.'' When they laid down their arms, we murdered them. We lied to them. We cheated them out of their lands. We starved them into signing fraudulent agreements that we called treaties which we never kept. We turned them into beggars on a continent that gave life for as long as life can remember. And by any interpretation of history, however twisted, we did not do right. We were not lawful nor were we just in what we did. For them, we do not have to restore these people, we do not have to live up to some agreements, because it is given to us by virtue of our power to attack the rights of others, to take their property, to take their lives when they are trying to defend their land and liberty, and to make their virtues a crime and our own vices virtues. But there is one thing which is beyond the reach of this perversity and that is the tremendous verdict of history. And history will surely judge us. But do we care? What kind of moral schizophrenia is it that allows us to shout at the top of our national voice for all the world to hear that we live up to our commitment when every page of history and when all the thirsty, starving, humiliating days and nights of the last 100 years in the lives of the American Indian contradict that voice? It would seem that the respect for principle and the love of one's neighbor have become dysfunctional in this country of ours, and that all we have done, all that we have succeeded in accomplishing with our power is simply annihilating the hopes of the newborn countries in this world, as well as friends and enemies alike, that we're not humane, and that we do not live up to our agreements. Perhaps at this moment you are saying to yourself what the hell has all this got to do with the Academy Awards? Why is this woman standing up here, ruining our evening, invading our lives with things that don't concern us, and that we don't care about? Wasting our time and money and intruding in our homes. I think the answer to those unspoken questions is that the motion picture community has been as responsible as any for degrading the Indian and making a mockery of his character, describing his as savage, hostile and evil. It's hard enough for children to grow up in this world. When Indian children watch television, and they watch films, and when they see their race depicted as they are in films, their minds become injured in ways we can never know. Recently there have been a few faltering steps to correct this situation, but too faltering and too few, so I, as a member in this profession, do not feel that I can as a citizen of the United States accept an award here tonight. I think awards in this country at this time are inappropriate to be received or given until the condition of the American Indian is drastically altered. If we are not our brother's keeper, at least let us not be his executioner. I would have been here tonight to speak to you directly, but I felt that perhaps I could be of better use if I went to Wounded Knee to help forestall in whatever way I can the establishment of a peace which would be dishonorable as long as the rivers shall run and the grass shall grow. I would hope that those who are listening would not look upon this as a rude intrusion, but as an earnest effort to focus attention on an issue that might very well determine whether or not this country has the right to say from this point forward we believe in the inalienable rights of all people to remain free and independent on lands that have supported their life beyond living memory. Thank you for your kindness and your courtesy to Miss Littlefeather. Thank you and good night. This statement was written by Marlon Brando for delivery at the Academy Awards ceremony where Mr. Brando refused an Oscar. The speaker, who read only a part of it, was Shasheen Littlefeather. Later that night, before she announced the Best Actress winner, Raquel Welch said, "I hope the winner doesn't have a cause." When Clint Eastwood presented the Best Picture award, he remarked that he was presenting it "on behalf of all the cowboys shot in John Ford westerns over the years." Michael Caine, the night's co-host, criticized Brando for "Letting some poor little Indian girl take the boos" instead of "[standing] up and [doing] it himself". Reception and legacy The audience in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion was divided between applause and jeers. Brando and Littlefeather's protest was generally considered inappropriate for the awards ceremony. "I was distressed that people should have booed and whistled and stomped, even though perhaps it was directed at myself," Brando later told Dick Cavett. "They should have at least had the courtesy to listen to her." Her appearance prompted the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to rule out future proxy acceptance of Academy Awards. Littlefeather claims that she was blacklisted by the Hollywood community and received threats. In addition, she says, media reports published several falsehoods, such as that she was not Native American or had rented the outfit for the occasion. She has said that the federal government encouraged the blacklisting in order to abate Native American activism after Wounded Knee. The speech was credited with bringing attention back to the Wounded Knee standoff, on which a media blackout had been imposed. Coretta Scott King called Littlefeather to thank her for the speech. In 2014, the 87th ceremony of the Academy Awards drew criticism for lack of diversity in nominations; actress Jada Pinkett Smith, who boycotted the ceremony, cited Littlefeather as inspiration to do so. After giving the speech, Littlefeather spent two days in Los Angeles before returning to San Francisco. When she visited Marlon Brando's house after the Academy Awards, while they were talking, bullets were fired into his front door. At age 29 her lungs collapsed, and after recovering, she received a degree in health and a minor in Native American medicine, a practice she had used to recover. Studying nutrition, she lived in Stockholm for some time and then traveled Europe, interested in the food of other cultures. Later, she taught at St. Mary's Hospital in Tucson, Arizona, and worked with the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. In 1979, she co-founded the National American Indian Performing Arts Registry, which later helped several actors join the production of Dances with Wolves. She shared an Emmy Award as an advisor to PBS's Dance in America: Song for Dead Warriors (1984). She also worked on the PBS shows Remember Me Forever and The Americas Before Columbus (both 1992), and she has produced films on Native American health. In 2009, she gave testimony in the documentary Reel Injun about Native Americans in film. She continued doing activism and became a respected member of California's Native American community. In the 1980s, she led prayer circles for Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native American Catholic saint. In 1988, she worked with Mother Teresa helping AIDS patients in hospice care, later founding the American Indian AIDS Institute of San Francisco. She campaigned against obesity, alcoholism, and diabetes, and specifically assisted Native Americans with AIDS, including her brother. In 2015, Littlefeather reported that unauthorized persons were using her name and image to raise money for what was ostensibly a fundraiser for the Lakota nation. However, the money was never donated to any campaign. In March 2018, a spokesperson announced that Littlefeather had developed stage 4 breast cancer. As of April 2018, Littlefeather resides in Northern California. 2023.05.26 19:56 MassiveReign Episode 4
Episode 4
The train back to Cincinnati was about halfway full. Madame Tandoori had decided she would return with Ridgemont. They were not the same as they had been before they met.
“So…are you from Colorado?” Ridgemont asked Madame Tandoori.
“My whole life,” she said. “I made my way around Denver…everybody does…and then I figured there wasn’t anything for me there, so I made my way down – was planning to move to New Mexico…Santa Fe, but just didn’t…what about you? Are you from…where are we going again?”
“Cincinnati,” he answered. “No…I’m originally from a little mountain town…I ran away from home when I was 14 and went to Baltimore. I got a job as a cleaner at the National Aquarium…I slept there…I had dreams of becoming…” he paused, as if just realizing in real time, “well, I guess I don’t know what I wanted…” he said. “There’s something about being around the fish…you know. It’s peaceful. I often think about what it would have been like had I stayed that course…”
“I never knew of anyone from Baltimore,” she said.
“Have you heard of Edgar Allan Poe?” he asked.
“Yeah, he was from there?” she asked.
“Well, no…but he was there a lot and had a house…it’s a historic site now,” he replied, selling it.
“Sounds cool, can we go?” she said.
“Well, the last time I went there, I saw someone get shot right out in front of it…it was over a decade ago…a drug deal gone sour or something,” he said.
“Think of a number between one and a hundred,” she said.
“Uh…20,” he said.
“No, don’t tell me,” she corrected.
“Okay.”
“You got it?” she asked.
“Yeah.”
She closed her eyes, held her emerald and took in several deep breaths.
“81,” she said.
He looked at her, amazed. “Yes.”
Back in Cuchara, a group of hikers were out on a little trail along the mountainside through the forest. The day had started out clear and sunny, but quickly became overcast with a massive storm brewing in the distance seen from atop the mountain. The group of 7 were hurrying back to the start of the trail, seeing the oncoming storm.
The group of guys were somewhat local – from just north in Pueblo. They’d hiked around the area here and there when they could and knew the trail they were on well. As they were crossing a narrow strip of the peak with an exposed cliff ledge, thunder erupted and rumbled the ground.
The third in the straight line stepped along just where the others had and caught a loose rock along the ridge, which slid and caused a slight sink in the ground below. He lost his balance in the slide and grabbed the hiker in front of him, pulling him down with him.
The pair hit the ground and slid down the ravine, screaming for life. The other hikers atop watched in horror as their friends went down the mountain edge.
“Aban…George!” they yelled down to them.
The group atop mobilized and ran down the trail looking for ways to get down to reach their friends. One of the group, Nathan, took out his handheld and called Aban, the first one to fall.
It rang with no answer.
“Aban!” he yelled out.
They made their way down quickly, not knowing where the pair were or if they were even alive. A few minutes later, Nathan’s handheld rang. It was Aban – he was at the bottom with a broken leg and George was unconscious.
“Here, I’m sending you my location,” said Aban. He sent Nathan his pin location so they could come find them.
Aban lay there with George on the ground. George was unconscious but Aban determined he was alive. Thunder continued to rumble and the sky – now deeply dark navy blue was broken with the white-yellow switches of lightning.
He was relieved as he lay there and looking around, noticed something just beyond the tree line of the forest area he was in. It appeared to be a little clearing and in the clearing, it looked like a man standing and watching him. The man appeared to be in tattered clothing and covered in soot. As Aban tried to get a better look at the man, a bird landed on a branch next to him. The bird was yellow, but covered in filth and chirped at him.
“Aban!” he heard being called out in the distance. He looked toward the voice and called out to it. And when he looked back, the bird and the man were gone.
When the group reached the two injured they checked George, who began to come-to. They all laughed and embraced. And just then, it began to hail.
They looked around and one of them standing up noticed the clearing and saw an opening in the mountainside they could hide out in until the storm passed. So they lifted Aban up and carried him over to the entrance that was surrounded by cleared rocks. It began hailing and thundering heavily.
In the mine, the group found supplies and fire materials that were old, but still good.
“What is this place?” one asked.
“Looks like some kind of old, abandoned mine,” Nathan said. He walked up to the wall of the cavern and saw the row of oil lanterns. “They still have oil in them…”
One of the group walked up with a lighter and lit the rag in it and it burned bright, revealing drawings on the wall.
“What is that?” asked George.
“I don’t know,” said Nathan, “looks like some kind of cave drawing…a bear or something.”
“It’s the Big Dipper,” Aban said.
“Oh yeah, I see it now,” one of them said. “How old do you think this is?” They walked around and lit more of the lanterns.
There was a sound from deep within the cave. The hail and thunder outside persisted greatly.
“Look at this,” one of them said.
They walked up to a shining, gnarled surface of the wall.
“What is it?” asked an immobile and in pain Aban.
“I think it’s…gold!” Nathan said.
“How can that be? How can no one know about this place?” one of them said.
A couple of them decided to walk back into the mine and see how far it went. They lit the lanterns along the way. About 15 minutes into the mine, they saw a pickax sitting against the wall and it looked like a little void about the size of a basketball was out of the wall. As they continued, they lit the lanterns along the way. About 5 minutes later, the mine was collapsed and they couldn’t go any further, so they headed back to let the rest of the group know it was empty.
“We need to get you to a doctor,” Nathan said to Aban.
After another 30 minutes passed and the hail had let up. The group put together a makeshift stretcher to carry Aban on. Nathan walked over to the wall and took one of the rocks on the ground and chipped away and was able to chip off a section of the shiny rock.
“I think that’s fool’s gold, man,” one of them said.
“Either way, it’s fine,” he replied.
He took the nugget and sat it on the ground in the middle of the cave. He looked over at one of them, John, and said, “You got any bills on you?”
John looked at him curiously and replied, “Maybe, why?”
“Just check,” Nathan replied.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a little smaller leather pocket and pulled out 2 $20 bills.
“Let me see one,” Nathan said.
He handed him one of the bills and Nathan placed it under the nugget of fool’s gold. Then he stood up and said, “We’ll leave that here, we’ll come back in 2 weeks, and if that hasn’t moved, this place is ours.”
“Wait,” said John, “give me that one back.”
“Dude, I’ll give you $20 when we get back to town,” Nathan said.
“It’s not that,” John replied. “Take this one instead,” handing him the other of the bills. “That one’s more rare – I might keep it.”
Nathan handed him back the $20 bill and took the other one. The difference in the bills was one had a portrait of Andrew Jackson and the other, a portrait of Tecumseh. In 2030 – 200 years after Andrew Jackson pushed the passage of the Indian Removal Act – he was removed from the $20 bill and replaced with a portrait of Tecumseh. The bills with Andrew Jackson largely were phased out and removed from circulation. As such, had become exceedingly rare to come across.
“Your clumsy ass may have just found our new retreat,” George said while slapping Aban’s leg and laughing as he winced in pain.
The group hoisted the injured Aban up and headed out to get back.
It was night when Ridgemont and Madame Tandoori made it back to Ridgemont’s apartment. When they walked in, Julia was there to greet Ridgemont. She looked up at Madame Tandoori and she puffed up, hissed and growled.
“What’s wrong sweetie?” Ridgemont said, comforting her.
“Sweet cat,” Madame Tandoori said sarcastically.
“Here’s the kitchen, the bathroom, the balcony and the bedroom,” he said to her, pointing through the little apartment. They started making their way to the bedroom. Julia ran by and jumped up on the bed. The two walked in and Julia again hissed at Madame Tandoori.
She picked Julia up and she was growling loudly now and pushing away with her legs and digging her claws into her arm.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
“Oh, I’m just going to let her cool off outside a bit,” she said. And she tossed the cat outside the bedroom and closed the door. She walked back over to Ridgemont and started rubbing his cock.
The next morning, Ridgemont woke up and there was the smell of cooking in the kitchen. He walked out and Madame Tandoori was in the kitchen cooking and smiling.
“Good morning, dear,” she said.
“Good morning,” he replied.
“Would you like some breakfast?” she said.
“Uh, sure,” he said.
She put a steaming hot plate of eggs and steaks on the table in front of him.
He started eating.
“This is pretty good,” he said. “Where did you get steak?”
She sat down and started eating too.
“Let me give some to Julia,” he said.
“Julia!” he called out.
“Meow,” Madame Tandoori said.
“Julia!” he called out again.
“Meow,” Madame Tandoori repeated.
He looked at her irritated. “What, have you seen her?”
She looked at him and giggled and held up her plate and said, “Meow,”
“What?” he said.
“She’s part of us now, Allen” Madame Tandoori said.
He looked at her horrified and began to weep a little bit.
“It was quick and painless,” she said.
He turned around, lunged with his arm and clenched her throat and slammed her off her chair down to the ground.
“You sick bitch!” he said.
She gasped for air, “She didn’t die for nothing, she completed the ritual. We can have everything now.”
He lifted her torso by her neck and slammed her back down on the floor and walked away.
