2023.05.29 13:09 kukusek Loan report 29.05. 22-23 Summary. Not yet championship edition.
Okaaay, so we're still shaking after the game, and already shaking before next season. Time to wrap things up.
Let's start with the Ladies team, they finished 6th and deserve some recognition. I don't follow WSL much, so i'll help myself with BBC Sport Emma Sanders quote:
"Their form dipped in the final few months and they still lack consistency but given they were fighting relegation last year, this can be viewed as a very successful campaign and they have solid foundations to build on. "
Also worth noting, our Women's team played their last game away at City, were losing 3:0 but still managed to scare them by going 3:2, knowing these 3 points don't matter to our place in the table. Their lost their last game of the season but put up a fair fight.
U18:
First full season under Leighton Baines ended at 4th place in the Under-18 Premier League North.
“For our lads, the development comes before the winning,” he said. “The winning still has to matter because they’re getting older and closer to the real game. We create that environment on a Saturday as balanced as we can. We work on certain things during the week and we’re willing to practise them on the weekend, even if it may be to a detriment of the potential outcome.
“At the same time, the kids play football, and they want to win. We’re not trying to create an overly sanitised environment where they don’t know how to win and where they don’t know how to play under pressure. We find a balance of those two things. What I’ve been blessed with this year, is that the lads have built a really strong bond and team spirit. I think that’s been reflected in some of those comeback performances and the ability to dig in." - Leighton words on his first coaching season.
https://www.evertonfc.com/news/3340734/baines-reflects-on-impressive-maiden-year-as-a-coach Since last report - Two draws against MU, draw against Newcastle, and a home win vs Stoke.
U19:
Also our u19 team played at Nawi Mumbai PL Next gen cup last two weeks, in which their ended third in their group and lost their playoff game to go further. Some games were played in 37'C heat.
U21:
Youngsters finished eight in the PL2 _ Division 1. What is more impressive, they managed to get to quarterfinals in the PL International Cup, beaten by the final winners PSV Eindhoven U21, and to 1/16 in both PL Cup and EFL Trophy(beaten by Senior Lincoln team). That was first Paul Tait season as U21 coach. Results went downwards after the january transfer window, when Tom Cannon went on loan, and Joe Anderson and Seb Quirk joined Sunderland and Accrington Stanley on permament transfers. Some words from the coach:
“It gave the boys a lot of confidence they could go on and play men’s football,” he explained. “The likes of Tom Cannon, Joe Anderson and Seb Quirk all got good moves
“Tom played against these experienced players in the Papa John’s and then went on to have a really successful loan spell at Preston North End.”
“It was a huge transition between January and March," he added. "Players went out and we needed replacements, but I felt we found our feet again towards the end of the season.
“It’s not easy for some of the Under-18s transitioning through. They can find the jump hard, but they’ve done well. We’ve had lads like Owen Barker, Halid Djankpata and Roman Dixon coming through and impressing.
“Roman joined us in the past few weeks and knows the level that is required now. It’s important for these players to experience it. Ishe Samuels-Smith has been with us since the start and has been brilliant, as have Katia Kouyate and Francis Okoronkwo.”
Since last loan report: Win and loss against Leicester, and Loss away vs Arsenal.
Loanees:
João Virgínia (SC Cambuur) - Last time on the bench - 21.04 - since then probably they were sure of the relegation and preferred their own players. Joao last game played was 21.01 and it was a bad one. Then he was benched, and changing of manager didn't help him either. Even when new first choice keeper made multiple blunders, manager kept with him. Contracted till 2024
Andre Gomes (Lille OSC) - He found his place and a manager that uses him well. Lille sits 4th which grants them Europe league, with one round to play next week. They have to win with already relegated Troyes, otherwise they might fall even to 6th. Andre Played 5 matches from the 7 Lille played since last report - 3 wins and 2 draw. One loss and win without Andre. To end it on a happy note, here are some highlights, with two goals as beautiful as Andre is.
Recommended ! Contracted till 2024
https://youtu.be/MQMj43reBmM - Andre bangers!
Jarrad Branthwaite (PSV Eindhoven) - He's the hope for us, won the Cup, and ended second with PSV Eindhoven. After a rough start he became a natural starter. PSV would love to keep him, but they would have to break all the banks in Netherland. Contracted till 2025
Since last report: 7 games, all with Jarrad. 6 wins, 1 draw against Heerenveen, PSV last home game(That wasn't a great game by Jarrad, but that happens).
https://youtu.be/g3hrvYMxB4M - Cup Final with Jarrad OG. Keeping Ajax in check was never meant to be easy. Love his sprint around 1:25 to provide support though.
Niels Nkounkou (Saint-Etienne) - That's our Second French league hot cake, and definitely not a fullback. ASSE is 10th with one game to go, and still can finish form 12 to 6th. They were dancing with relegation zone when he came there. I wonder what comes next for this guy. 6 goals 7 assists since january.
https://youtu.be/u1F3QCWb9R8 - assist vs Guingamp
https://youtu.be/Rhso0dEBgnM - goal Vs Metz
Dele Alli (Beşiktaş JK) - Last involvement in football - 26.02 match against Antalayaspor. For more news visit Celebrities rumours section of some shady journo outlet. Contracted till 2024. Ughh
Jean-Philipe Gbamin (Trabzonspor) - At least he's still involved in football, played in 4th of 5 matches since the last report. Always subbed on in the last 20 minutes. Two rounds to go. No idea about what to do with guy, but at least he's on the field sometimes. Contracted till 2024
Thomas Cannon (Preston North End) - After a great spell, with a lot of goals scored, there comes a slump. From 5 last games, PNE lost 4, and drew 1. Tom scored one goal in this time, against Swansea, but it meant nothing in the end (4:2 loss). PNE buried the small chance it had of getting to playoffs and finished 12th. 8 goals and 1 assist since January. His contract is valid till 2025.
https://youtu.be/n785ACurXI0 - goal against Swansea
Lewis Dobbin (Derby County) - Derby really lost their way at the end and landed in 7th place. Dobbin always played the role of a fresh energy sub, but didn't get an goal or an assist since the end of february. This season numbers: 3 goals, 1 penalty won, 4 assists. + one goal in a EFL Trophy, and one assist in a cup. He has a contract till 2025.
Lewis Warrington (Fleetwood Town) - 2 Wins, 2 losses, one draw since last report, all with Lewis playing. In terms of game time per season - clear winner, he missed only a few games. As a midfielder playing under Scott Brown, he surely learned something. Only one assist to his name, but also no red cards and no errors, and he mostly plays as the last midfielder, screening defence. Fleetwood Town ended season in 13th place. He could find a loan in the championship next year. Contracted till 2024
Ryan Astley (Accrington Stanley) - Haven't played since february, kept out by injuries. When healthy, played all the games he could. Accrington Stanley are relegated to League Two now, but i can see them, or even some League One club wanting him to play if healthy. He's out of contract this summer. Seb Quirk joined him and penned a deal with AS this january.
Lewis Gibson (Bristol Rovers) - I'm happy to finally see this kid play some football without injury. When he showed his quality, he quickly became a starter for BR, playing as CB and occasionally as LB. They ended 17th(5 losses and 2 draws since last report), and could sign him permamently as he's out of contract this summer. Surely some League One club will go for him.
Tyler Onyango (Forest Green Rovers) - He had to fight for his place during the Burton Albion loan, and played not regularly under Dino. Then he(with Everton club) took a gamble and sent him to Forest Green Rovers, to play under Big Dunc he knew very well. No one could have predicted the injury that kept him out after playing just 3 games for the Green team. Fun fact - Burton Albion fought against relegation when he was there, and they ended 15th, but Forest Green Rovers ended being relegated from the last place. He's 20y.o. contracted till 2025.
Harry Tyrer (Chester) -
The National League North Team of the Season 2022/23 "The Everton loanee has had quite the season down CH1. Recruited last summer on a season-long deal, Tyrer was quick to show his key attributes.
His dominance inside the box was clear for all to see, as was his remarkable shot stopping. His distribution isn’t bad either – that assist for Kurt Willoughby’s winner at home to Bradford (PA) springs to mind!
A fan favourite from day one, his signature dive into the Chester fans after away victories became a highlight on the road. A record of 21 clean sheets in his 55 appearances isn’t bad either.
Harry evidently has a bright future in the game and has been a credit to the Blues both on and off the pitch – he will always be fondly remembered at the Deva." - Chester FC
Chester sadly lost against Brackley 0:1 in the promotion playoffs.
Harry has contract with the club till 2025
Thank You guys. Sorry for being chaotic, but with the relegation battle going on i couldn't focus on doing these regularly. It's gonna be a hard next season, but i look forward to how our academy will look like next year as changes made under Thelwell should be more evident. submitted by

2023.05.29 12:57 wscholermann I’m a Melburnian but also a realist – Sydney is by far the better city
| The news last week that 15,000 of the globe’s residents chose Sydney as the best place in the world to live has stirred up a predictable mix of outrage and pride. There’s not many Australians who don’t have strong feelings, one way or another, about Sydney’s virtues and vices. As a Melburnian, I should be responding to the results of the Brand Finance survey with indignation, stomping my black-clad feet in protest while the hand that grips my strong macchiato shakes with contempt. I’m supposed to tell you that Sydney is all surface, while Melbourne reveals her charms slowly, like a Sports Illustrated model in an ankle-length puffer. That Melbourne has repeatedly taken the title of World’s Most Liveable City in other surveys. But when I think about where in the world I would choose to live – if money and family arrangements were of no consequence – it’s always Sydney. Give me the charm that I don’t need a pair of prescription lenses to see. Give me the beauty that announces itself as soon as it comes into view from the air. No one – no one – has ever gawped in wonder at the aesthetic grandeur of the descent into Tullamarine. Yes, Sydney is too expensive, the roads choked 24/7, the concentration of extreme wealth in certain areas morally repugnant. But, hey, no one’s perfect. Sydney atones for her crimes by virtue of sheer bloody gorgeousness; it’s easier to get away with bad behaviour when you’re pretty. I am one of a small, quiet minority of Melburnians who understand that to live in Melbourne is human, to live in Sydney is divine. Like Sydney, Melbourne has prohibitively expensive real estate and a rich selection of perma-snarled highways and roads. Unlike Sydney, those roads don’t tend to take us any place special. We can’t unwind after a week in service to our inflated mortgages and rents by jumping into an ocean pool in Bronte, or Curl Curl, or one of Sydney’s countless other picture postcard spots. There are no whales to be watched within an hour of the CBD. We can’t walk off a big breakfast on the Manly to Spit trail, or by strolling the perimeters of the harbour, from Lavender Bay to McMahons Point and beyond. More than once, looking into the window of a high-rise apartment, I have considered the thought that a cat with a harbour view has a better quality of life than me. In Melbourne, the scope of our outdoor options is limited; an ice-cold plunge into the open sewer of a Port Phillip Bay beach cannot, even with the most optimistic of hearts, compete with a morning swim at Mahon Pool in Maroubra. It’s heretical to be from Melbourne and not fiercely defend its myriad charms – the cultural life! the coffee! the food! – and it’s not that these charms are exaggerated. They are, however, common to many big cities. Melbourne friends, lean in close; Sydney has a cultural life, too. It’s just not wholly dependent on it for its self-esteem, as we are in Melbourne. We’ve had to load Melbourne up with arts festivals and film festivals and tiny bars because the city itself – flat, cold and physically unremarkable – hasn’t given us much in the way of raw materials to work with. Brett Whiteley described Sydney Harbour as “optical ecstasy”. There is no optical ecstasy to be found in Melbourne, only optical antacid. While Sydney’s cultural life is arguably not as rich as Melbourne’s, its bohemian spirit is not dead. Look beyond the pokies lounges and you can still feel the romance, coming off the walls, in Kings Cross and Potts Point. Its visual glory is a kind of creative force in itself; if Sydney’s beauty doesn’t inspire a poetic thought to pass through your head, I don’t know what will. It’s not that I don’t like Melbourne. I just don’t have an inflated sense of its magnificence. It’s my home, that’s all. I can appreciate many things – walking the streets where I spent the first half of my childhood bathes my synapses in serotonin. So does driving out to the semi-rural enclave my family moved to when I was 11, which I loathed with an unbending resolve for the entire eight years I lived there. Now, all I see is its loveliness – the rolling hills, the kangaroos, the smell of horses and wood smoke. There is good food on every corner of every suburb; if you eat poorly in Melbourne, you have only yourself to blame. I am capable – in the way a Sydney resident could never be – of deeply enjoying a Sunday amble alongside a sliver of creek, situated in the pocket of a roaring highway. And I can equanimously ignore the miasma and mucky water of the tawdry little canal near my home, and feel gratitude that it exists, and that this is where I live. But I can only do so by tucking thoughts of Sydney into the furthermost corners of my mind, with my overdue phone bills and tax returns. When I took my kids to Sydney late last year, my youngest daughter, contemplating the boats bobbing on the harbour, the sweet heavy frangipani air, and the sunshine, turned to me and asked, with a perplexed look on her face, “Why doesn’t everyone live here?” Exorbitant house prices notwithstanding, it’s a question for which I have no good answer. submitted by wscholermann to melbourne [link] [comments] |
2023.05.29 12:57 Finzombie The Thing in the Cracks - Part 1
By Fin
“Holy crap.” James Talbot stepped back from his handiwork. It was beautiful. It made him want to scream.
Talbot was a chemist, the modern form of an alchemist, and he’d discovered something as wondrous and terrible as the most extreme postulations of his forbearers.
This was it. The culmination of all his works. This is what he’d fought for decades for, why he’d abandoned connections with everyone he’d ever known. But now it was all worth it. He would reveal the Masterwork at the Grand Chemistry Convention. It would steal the show, and he would be revered beyond every other human being who had ever lived.
It had taken Talbot long enough to assemble the Masterwork that he’d shed the title of ‘young’, not to mention most of his non-gray hair. Although it was hard to tell whether that was from aging or from what he’d beheld in his long sojourn. He was only 45, after all, and the rest of his body still held firm from decades of outdoorsmanship.
Talbot stood before a wall, upon which was painted the most intricate design any human had ever seen. It was a diagram of… unknown things. A chart of runes, maps, and artfully painted lines. There was no text in any living language on the diagram, but the harmony within the full tapestry visually sang, imparting something unfathomable in a way that Talbot could somehow fathom. The man who’d made it, who’d studied it for 15 years, barely understood it himself. But he knew that it was the ultimate solution to the entirety of philosophy, containing the answers to every question humanity had ever seen fit to ask. It had existed in his notebook for a while, in bits and pieces, but today had been its first full assembly, and it was magnificent.
He had to keep it hidden, or someone would take it from him.
He retrieved a tarp and threw it over the wall, nailing it in at the top so it hung down to cover his designs. Just to be sure, he moved his desk to block the wall, then locked the door to his office when he left for the day. James Talbot was more excited than he had ever been, and he celebrated that night with a fireplace and a large bottle of whiskey.
Of all the people at his office to commit espionage, Talbot never would’ve suspected the night janitor. This may stem from the fact that he also never suspected the night janitor to be part of a massive secret organization dedicated to keeping humanity as ignorant as possible in matters of the Higher Order.
But no matter what Talbot suspected, Tim Willis was indeed part of this society, and after he’d entered Talbot’s office with his master key to do some routine cleaning, the obvious secrecy surrounding the wall at the back of the room worried him. So he moved the desk out of the way, lifted the tarp, and inhaled sharply.
This was bad. A tapestry of the Higher Order more complete than any he’d seen before, or any reported by the other Censors of the Agency for the Preservation of Humanity.
Willis quickly replaced the tarp and desk. As soon as he’d locked the room, he pulled out his phone and dialed the number for an Alexander Talc.
Talbot arrived the next morning with a song in his heart and a latte in his hand. The former died horribly as soon as he entered his office only to find someone sitting in his chair, and the latter died horribly as it fell from his fingers, limp in shock.
The person in question was a short, slight man who wore thick glasses and a dark gray suit. He was sitting on Talbot’s office chair, facing the now uncovered back wall with all of its eldritch calculations. Talbot’s desk had been moved to the side of the room, left askew with the tarp crumpled up on top.
As Talbot entered, the stranger spun the chair around so he was facing the chemist, a broad smile on his face. He was undeniably attractive, in a delicate sort of way.
“Ah! You must be the aspiring alchemist?” He spoke softly and cheerily, but with an unnerving edge. Talbot couldn’t identify any specific aspect of his voice that disturbed him, but upon further consideration he concluded that it was the incongruity of the situation, the warm friendliness of his tone grating against Talbot’s unease.
Talbot took a step back, shaken. “I don’t… what-”
“Quite an impressive display here. You’ve managed to glean a quite large amount of knowledge about the Higher Order, especially considering you’ve never consulted us at the APH.” He pronounced it phonetically, like Aff.
“What are you-”
Talbot heard a click from behind him, and turned to see Tim Willis, the night janitor, closing and locking his door. He could barely register the betrayal.
“Ah, yes. Tim is working for me. For us. The Agency for the Protection of Humankind really frowns upon anyone attempting to learn the Higher Order.”
Talbot, finally able to form a full sentence, asked, “What’s the Higher Order?”
“You know what it is, of course, although you may not have heard the term. It’s what we call the mechanics of the very fabric of the universe itself. The questions about ‘why are we here?’ and ‘is there a god?’ and all the stuff like that. All theoretical philosophy, basically. And you, apparently through sheer dumb luck,” He turned to admire the mural again, “have managed to find more of it than any human being ever, including us! Quite impressive. Big hand.” The man slow-clapped for Talbot. The small sweet-looking man being sarcastically condescending was jarringly incongruous.
Talbot felt a surge of anger, and it helped him produce a full sentence. “Dumb luck?!?” He advanced on the man. “My Masterwork is the product of 20 years of research and experience! This is the greatest thing anyone has ever done, and how dare you say I achieved it through dumb luck!”
The man raised his hands placatingly. “Okay, okay!” He chuckled. “Years of research, whatever. You found the Higher Order. That’s where we come in.”
“Why?”
“Ah. Well, you see, the reason that no one’s found the entire Higher Order is simple. It’s because we stop them.”
Talbot was incredulous. “What?! Why would you stand in the way of progress like that?!” As a scientist, the possibility that there could be anyone actively against gaining knowledge was incomprehensible to him.
The man grimaced, as though he was about to break some terrible news. “Well… there are some parts of this tapestry you’ve assembled, specifically here...” The man pointed at a small segment of the diagram, a thick horizontal line with four thin lines crossing perpendicularly that turned into five lines on the other side, “That grants access to some other planes of existence. Planes of existence that are home to some very dangerous things. And due to some logistical aspects of the Higher Order,” He gestured at another segment of the diagram entirely composed of square symbols, “if you muck about in their domain, they are able to muck about in ours. The Law of Equivalent Interference.”
“But… how would our finding answers count as ‘mucking about in their domain’? If we knew the danger, we just wouldn’t go there.”
The man was silent, then answered Talbot’s question with a question. “Tell me, Talbot. If humans discovered another dimension, do you really think they’d be able to stay out of it?”
“Fine. But then why do you have to censor the whole thing? Why not give them the benign parts that would still forward human progress by centuries?”
“Because the Higher Order is like Algebra. Or a logic puzzle from Highlights magazine. If you give someone smart enough just a few clues, they’ll eventually assemble the whole picture. Which we desperately want to avoid.”
There was a long and heavy silence.
“Ok.” Said Talbot, wrapping his head around the new information. “So the APH stops people from finding the answers to these questions so our world isn’t destroyed by Fourth Dimensional entities?”
“Exactly!” The man nodded, delighted at Talbot’s comprehension. “Well, they’re technically Fifth Dimensional. The existence of time in our reality means that this is the Fourth Dimension.”
There was another silence.
“Sorry, what was your name again?” Talbot asked.
The man looked utterly devastated. “Oh no! I can’t believe I was so rude!” He vaulted the desk and approached Talbot, stopping just short and shaking his hand. “Alexander Talc, Class 2 Censor Operative for the APH.”
“Censor as in… ?”
“Yes, I censor things. People too, if necessary.”
“So what,” Talbot asked, “You’re here to kill me?”
Talc gasped. “What?!?! No! As if we’d be so barbaric! We’re here to recruit you.”
Talbot’s eyes widened. “Wait, really?”
“Of course! You know more about the Higher Order than any human outside of the APH, and probably more than a majority of those inside of the APH. Your expertise could be vital in preventing a breach in our reality!”
“What would this job entail?”
“Well, we’d need you to fake your death, change your name, burn your research-”
Talbot recoiled.
“Now I know that sounds like a lot,” Talc backpedaled, “But allow me to let you in on a little secret.” He leaned in conspiratorially, then glanced around as though to make sure nobody was listening. Satisfied, he whispered, “The dental is off-the-charts.”
Talbot shook his head. “What happens if I don’t take the job?”
Talc winced. “Things get considerably less pleasant. I have to call in a Class 3 Purge Operative, and that’s always a hassle.”
Talbot chose not to inquire into the purpose of a ‘Purge Operative’.
Talc gently laid a hand on Talbot’s shoulder. “It’s a lot to take in, I know. How about we move to some place more hospitable and you can think it over?”
Talbot nodded, his mind elsewhere. Talc gently guided him out of the room, Willis following and closing the door behind them.
Talbot stared down into his conical paper cup, filled with water that tasted plasticy. The three men were in the lobby of Talbot’s workplace, leaning against a table adorned with donuts and a water cooler.
Talc bit into a day-old bear claw as Talbot swirled his water and considered the situation.
If he accepted the offer, he would be shipped off to another state, away from his home in Bedford, where he would join whatever on earth APH was. Talbot hated the idea of working for an agency whose entire purpose was to destroy knowledge. On the other hand, if he didn’t accept the offer, they’d likely kill him.
Purge Officer…
Would working for the APH really be so bad? Talbot liked Talc enough. Maybe they could be friends. Or… more than friends. And if the APH truly wanted Talbot to be able to suppress the Higher Order, he’d have to know the Higher Order. Which meant research. He could essentially continue on exactly as he was.
Except he would never be recognized as the genius he was. Talbot involuntarily crushed his paper cup as he realized that, if he took the offer, he’d never win a Nobel prize. He’d never present at the Grand Chemistry Convention. He’d never write a revolutionary scientific paper. He would be forgotten.
He knew what he had to do. He couldn’t say no, or he would be killed. He couldn’t accept, or he would be forgotten, which was worse. He had to escape.
But how? This was some sort of world-ruling secret agency. They probably had eyes everywhere. What could he possibly do to get away?
His eyes wandered towards the stairs. The stairs that led to his office, which held the key to every single natural law.
Talbot tossed his cup in the trash, then approached Talc.
“I think I’m ready to make my decision. But first, can I go to the restroom?”
Talc nodded. “Of course! Take all the time you need!”
Talbot nodded and jogged toward the restroom. In the tiled floor under him, he saw Willis’s warped reflection following him discreetly.
He entered the single restroom and quietly opened the window. He could see Willis’s shadow under the door as the man hovered just outside.
Talbot waited a couple seconds, then flushed the toilet, turned on the sink, and silently crept through the window. He fell a few feet to the alley below, and had to suppress a grunt.
Now what? He needed to escape, but his notebook was still upstairs. All his research was in there, and he couldn’t leave it to the APH.
The only ground level entrance to the building was the main lobby door, which was directly in Talc’s sightline. However, who said he had to enter on ground level?
Talbot’s gaze rose to the old fire escape above him. The bottom of the structure was a platform that lined up with the second floor. A ladder was folded up on the platform, an old rusty latch keeping it from reaching ground level. Talbot couldn’t reach the latch from where he was on the ground, so he looked around for a solution.
He had a bum throwing arm, so he couldn’t toss anything up to break it. Unless…
Talbot considered Talc’s words. The very mechanics of the universe itself... He felt a flare of pride as he realized how little Talc truly understood.
The sigil that granted access to the Fifth Dimension was just one of several such Seals. Over all Talbot’s years of study, those portions of the Higher Order were the most applicable. They did not just show universal aspects of reality. They represented those aspects. They were symbolic, and like all symbols, they were powerful.
They were simulacra of natural laws, and could be manipulated in order to manipulate those laws themselves. It allowed anyone who knew the Seals to weave a sort of magic, ignoring the laws of time, space, or gravity by sketching and then destroying the corresponding runes, temporarily destroying that Law’s influence over oneself. Talbot’s hypothesis was that there was a single Greater Seal for each law that controlled that law anywhere and everywhere. If that one was found and destroyed, the laws of reality would change forever.
For greater, wide-scale application, Talbot had scrawled in his notebook, The Greater Aspects must be located and manipulated.
Talbot dropped to the ground and dragged his finger through the alley gravel. He assembled the rocks into a facsimile of a tiny part of the Higher Order, one that he’d experimented with a lot. He looked around for a suitable vessel, settling on a rock. He poured all his mental energy into the stone, and used his hands to scatter the pebbles that made up the Seal of Velocity.
The rock sprang from the ground and soared upwards, clanging against the ladder before anticlimactically falling into a dumpster. From inside, Willis banged on the bathroom door and said something indistinct. Talbot’s second telekinetic toss hit the ladder before falling onto the platform itself. He broke another Seal, and his third throw smacked into the latch, splitting the rusted thing and shooting the ladder downwards.
It made a lot of noise, and Talbot could hear Willis pounding on the bathroom door inside. He seemed to be breaking it down, as Talbot heard wood split with a crunch. Talbot quickly mounted the ladder and climbed up to the platform, trying not to think about the alarming creaking sounds the old construction was making. From there, he took the stairs two at a time, spiraling up and up until he reached the sixth floor.
Six flights of stairs only had him a bit winded by the time he reached his floor. He tried the door to the inside, and found it unlocked.
Talbot entered the hallway outside his office quietly. He considered how this would play out. Willis and Talc would be storming up here at any moment. He had to move quickly.
Talbot entered his workroom, dragging his desk over to block the door. He took a moment to gaze forlornly at his Masterwork, because he would never be able to take it with him. All the same pieces and diagrams were in his notebook, but the full Masterwork was a thing of beauty, one that he would never behold again.
He snapped a picture of it with his phone. It wasn’t the same, but it’d have to do.
Talbot grabbed his notebook, its leather-bound pages bulging with decades of research. Some of the sheaves of paper stuck out at odd angles, newspaper snippets and glossy photographs glued into the most faithful companion Talbot had ever had.
Was there anything else he needed?
The door began to rattle.
Talbot grabbed a sheet of blank paper from his desk and rapidly sketched as many Seals as he could. He had an idea of how he could escape, but he needed to harness his work to do it. Using the Masterwork as a reference, he scrawled the Seal of Time, the Seal of Space, the Seal of Gravity, and, after considering it, the Seal of the Fifth Dimension.
Just in case. He thought.
With a crack, his door burst open, shoving the desk out of the way. Talc and Willis stood there, the latter looking enraged, the former strangely calm.
“Talbot, this doesn’t have to happen this way.” Talc appealed, but Talbot was done listening. He would not be forgotten. He would be immortalized, through his work.
Talbot ripped a corner off of his Seal sheet, and glanced down at the Seal of Time. With a glare at Talc, he stuck it in his mouth and began to chew.
Talbot disappeared with a pop, as Willis lunged towards where he’d just been.
Willis stopped short, then turned to Talc. He was noticeably upset at losing their quarry.
“What do we do now?”
“Well, we follow him.”
“How?”
Talc approached the Masterwork. “It’s simple. I’m sure Talbot understood that time travel doesn’t work the way everyone thinks it does. Cause and Effect are inextricably linked, and cannot be put out of order. Traveling through time actually just creates another dimension, a splintered facsimile of your original where things play out differently.”
“So… to follow him do we just use the Time Sigil?”
“Seal, Willis. And no. That will just create another splinter plane. Now that the reality has already been established, we need to follow him. Using this.”
Talc’s thin fingers traced the outline of another Seal, one Talbot hadn’t thought to inscribe.
“There are many ways to traverse the Multiverse.” Talc said, “Using Seals to rip open the barriers between planes is one of the simplest.”
Talc sketched down two copies of the seal, then separated the two and handed one to Willis. The two locked eyes and nodded in unison. They both rent their sheets in half and disappeared.
Talbot didn’t ‘land’, per se, but he still felt off-balance when he blinked into existence in his office. He staggered, but caught himself before he could fall. The world felt… different here.
Out of everything Talbot had discovered, Multiversal travel was his least considered. He’d been too cowardly to experiment with anything but the Space, Gravity, and Velocity Seals, so this experience was new to him. Naturally, as any scientist does when faced with something unfamiliar, he started taking notes.
Effects of Time/Universe Traversal:
–Slight nausea. Somewhat noticeable. Temporary?
–World overall feels discordant. Silence sounds different than back home. My tinnitus is in another key. Feels like I don’t belong.
–Different frequency hard-coded into every reality?
Before he could assemble an entire thesis on the underlying resonance within the multiverse, he realized with a start that he had to get out of here. Talc and WIllis were likely following him, and even if they weren’t, there were copies of them in this dimension.
Talbot had willed himself about 10 minutes back in time, and it seemed like that’d worked. His Masterwork was complete and the desk and tarp were off to the side. The trio were likely downstairs in the lobby, where Past-Talbot was thinking over the pros and cons of their offer. At least, he thought so. Time travel seemed to create a splintering reality, one that maintained consistency with his original up until the point where he showed up. There were plenty of unfamiliar worlds out there, but the Seal of Time created one quite familiar. Right now Past-Talbot-
Past-Talbot doesn’t sound right. Pretty soon it’ll be my present, then my future. How about Talbot-2?
After settling upon a name to call his double, Talbot exited his office and left through the door that led to the fire escape, in too much of a hurry to close it. He scrambled down the stairs, knocked the latch off the ladder, climbed to the ground, popped open the bathroom window, and climbed inside. Right as he got his arms through, the door opened.
Talbot-2 walked in, then stopped short as he saw himself dangling halfway through the window. Talbot put a finger to his lips, and indicated Willis-2 with his eyes. Talbot-2 silently shut the door, locking Willis-2 outside.
Talbot-2 opened his mouth to speak, but barely got out one word. “What-”
“I’m you, from the future. Well, not from your future, but from a future.”
Talbot-2’s confused expression was replaced with excitement. “So the Time Seal Worked?! Fantastic! What’s it like?!”
“I’d tell you all about it, but I’m currently stuck in a bathroom window and being hunted down by two government agents. Although I don’t actually know if they work for the government…”
Talbot-2 pulled him through the window into the bathroom. “Sorry.”
Once he was in, Talbot glanced at the door behind Talbot-2.
“Okay. Here’s the thing. Some version of Talc and Willis will be here any minute. Whether mine followed me from the future or not, yours will catch on soon. We need to get out of here, and get the Masterwork to somebody else.”
“Wait, which Talc and Willis will show up?”
“One of them… or both of them. It doesn’t really matter! Do we know anybody we can send our notes to?”
Talbot-2 considered it. “Davis?”
Talbot frowned, and opened his notebook to an early page.
Dr. Wilson Davis
–Spineless fool. He calls himself a chemist, but refuses to venture outside the conventions of the industry. No true scientist works a cushy chemical production job! We journey! We endeavor!
Talbot shook his head. “He’d never publish something like this. If they tracked him down, he’d probably take their oppressive offer.”
“Johnson?”
Dr Monica Johnson
—Chemist and conspiracy nut. Super gullible, but generally a good person.
“She’ll believe anything.” Talbot said. “...Which is actually probably a good thing in this case. If she thinks it’s real, she’ll distribute it, and she’s earnest enough to leave my- our name on it.”
Talbot-2 nodded. “Sounds like a plan. Actually, it sounds like an idea, not a plan. What is our plan?”
Talbot thought for several seconds. “Here’s what we do. You pretend to accept their offer, and do whatever they tell you. If all else fails, you’ll get a cushy job working for the government. Meanwhile, I get this,” Talbot indicated his notebook. “To Johnson, and then…” He paused.
Someone knocked on the door.
“And then?” Talbot-2 prompted in a whisper, glancing behind him.
“Then… I’ll figure something out.”
Talbot-2 nodded. “Alright. Are we ready to go?”
“I think so.” Talbot replied.
Talbot slipped out of the window, and Talbot-2 opened the door to greet Willis-2.
The man peered around him. “Who were you talking to in there?”
Talbot-2 shrugged. “Myself. You know, crazy scientist stuff.”
Talbot dropped to the ground, then produced his sheet of Seals. He picked out one specific design, a circle bisected by a thin line. On one side of the line, a stylized forest thrived, and on the other a pictographic city loomed. Talbot ripped the Seal of Space from his paper and stuck it in his mouth, once again disappearing with a pop.
Talc and Willis appeared in Talbot-2’s workroom, and quickly exited. Both spun in the hallway outside, and both spotted the wide-open door to the fire escape. They both moved down the rickety metal construction and found themselves in an alley behind the building.
“See that?” Talc pointed at the window.
“Yeah. Did he go in through it?” Willis asked.
“Of course. But if he used the Seal of Time to try to come back and alert himself, I’m guessing he came through here to talk to him…self, but he couldn’t have left. The only point at which he was in the bathroom, you were right outside. He popped in, popped out, popped another Seal.”
“Is there any guarantee that he came back to alert himself? He could’ve gone to any point in time.”
“I know his type. The out-there intellectual. He’s been burned by everyone but himself. He’ll only trust himself. And if he came to himself before we’d arrived, he wouldn’t believe him.”
“Sorry, who wouldn’t believe him?”
“Him! Aren’t you-” Talc took a moment to consider the context. “You know what, nevermind. The point is that this reality’s Talbot is now in league with our Talbot, and that’s not good.”
“What do we do?”
“Well firstly, we need to cut it down to one Talbot. Two is too many to deal with.” Talc pushed on his earpiece, then spoke. “Hello? Can you hear me, Talc?” There was silence, until something dawned on him. “Ah, dammit. I can’t call my own earpiece.” He adjusted something on his earpiece. “Willis! Do you copy?” Willis heard Talc both from right next to him and through his earpiece. He didn’t hear the reply, but his earpiece buzzed as its exact copy broadcast something. Willis took his earpiece out and squinted at it, curious about the exact Multiversal properties that bonded it to its clone.
“Yes, this is Talc. But not your Talc. Listen, Talbot ran off to this dimension, and we believe he’s working with your Talbot. We need to meet up, then dispose of the dupe.”
Talc listened for a response, and Willis’s earpiece vibrated as his double presumably replied.
Talc turned to Willis. “Alright. They’ll meet us back in Talbot’s office. There we can get rid of the redundant one and track our quarry.”
Their quarry was currently depositing a large package of brown paper in a big blue mailbox.
Talbot paused as he lowered the boxy parcel. This was his life’s work, his notebook and all his scattered papers, and was the second-most important thing he owned, next to the wall that contained the Masterwork itself, which was likely being dismantled by his enemies at that very moment. This was the last 20 years of his life, and he was about to gamble it away to a crazy woman on the off-chance that his legacy might live on. Talbot wished he’d spent more time with reasonable scientists, if only to expand the pool of people he could mail his book to.
With a deep breath, Talbot released the book, wincing at the gentle ‘paff’ sound it made when it fell onto the envelopes at the bottom of the box.
His job complete, Talbot slipped the hood of his sweatshirt over his head and disappeared into the afternoon.
Guns are inelegant, Talc told his subordinate often. They’re loud, messy. Tools of thugs and soldiers, not agents of a higher purpose.
But there’s a downside to not carrying a gun, Willis countered silently. The difference between shooting a person and being forced to kill them more intimately is palpable, and not often a positive.
Willis considered this as Talbot-2 stopped struggling and finally went limp in his arms. Willis released the garotte from around the man’s throat, then lowered him to the floor of the office.
An irritated sigh came from behind him. Willis turned to see Talc shaking his head and walking toward him.
“No, you need to finish the job.” The man said. He kneeled, took Talbot-2’s forehead in one hand, his chin in the other, then jerked his head to the side, snapping his neck.
“If you stop garrotting when he goes limp, he’s just unconscious.” The other Talc, Talc-2, stated.
Willis nodded, numbly. He didn’t really hear the man.
“I know this is hard,” Talc said, shifting into a gentler tone, “But this is all for the good of humanity. If we let these ideas run wild, we’d all be dead.”
“Worse than dead.” Talc-2 added helpfully. “Our very essences would be consumed by dark beings from beyond our world.”
Willis nodded again. He’d heard it all before. So why did he still find it so hard to hurt people?
“So where’s the other one?” Willis-2 asked, seemingly unaware of his double’s predicament.
“That’s the big question, isn’t it.” Talc-2 mused, “However, before we can ponder it, first things first. We need to get a CC team in here to handle that wall.”
All four men were familiar with the APH Cognito Containment Teams, mysterious individuals in surgical masks that took away artifacts of forbidden knowledge to be stored or disposed of.
Talc-2 clicked his earpiece, then said a series of numbers and codes that were unintelligible to either Willis. He finished by saying, “Please send a Class-4 CC team. Over.”
He turned to the others. “They’re on their way. We need to secure Talbot’s place of residence.”
“Do we know that’s where he’ll go next?” Willis-2 asked.
“Not necessarily,” Talc-1 responded, “But it’s quite likely he’ll at least stop there to retrieve personal effects before going somewhere else.”
Both Willises nodded, almost in sync. The logic made sense. They would lock down Talbot’s house first.
All was silent in the small house several miles outside of town that Talbot called his abode. Then frantic footsteps sounded from outside, as someone ran up the footpath leading to the front door. Then, a faint scratching as Talbot scrambled to fit his key into the lock. A quiet clacking came next, as Talbot’s cat descended his cat-tree and approached the door to see what was happening.
Talbot swung the door open and gently pushed the cat out of his way with his foot.
“Sorry Ozzy,” he muttered.
He produced his debit card and snapped it in half, having extracted all the money from his account before arriving here. He pulled several thousand dollars from his pockets and shoved them in his wallet, his backpack, the pocket on the inside of his jacket, and his shoes.
He grabbed a spare toothbrush and tube of toothpaste from the master bathroom, shoving them into the backpack as well. He was going on the run, for god knows how long.
He paused as his eyes fell on his set of keys. He wouldn’t be taking his car or his house, so they’d likely not be necessary.
But I might as well just in case. Talbot grabbed the jangling key ring and slipped it into the inside pocket of his pants.
His cat mewed at his feet. After a moment’s hesitation, he grabbed his carrier and bowl, both monogrammed with a matching ‘Ozymandius’.
He knew bringing Ozzy was objectively a bad choice. It was impractical and stupid. The cat was loud, and would slow him down. But Talbot couldn’t bear leaving his baby here to be subjected to whatever evil ideas Talc and Willis had in mind.
Talbot coaxed Ozzy into his crate, then picked up the cat and donned his backpack. He took one last look around his house before he opened the front door and was immediately grabbed by both Willises, one of which held a chloroform rag over his mouth until he went limp.
Talbot awoke with a start. He glanced around, disoriented, and immediately registered that he was in some sort of interrogation room. His chair was metal, and bolted to the floor. Before him was a table, and above that table a blinding light mounted on the ceiling shone directly into his eyes. On the wall across from him, very much breaking the theme, was a ‘Hang in there!’ poster and a wall-mounted hand sanitizer dispenser.
Talbot tried to stand, only to find that his wrists and ankles were strapped into the chair. He strained against the bonds, cursing as the straps held strong.
He thought he heard faint snickering.
He turned to glare at the mirror to his right. “What are you planning to do to me?!”
Silence.
“What are you planning to do to my cat?!?”
More silence.
The Talcs and the Willi were standing behind the one-way mirror on Talbot’s left, looking at the back of his head as he shouted at no one. Talc looked mildly amused at Talbot’s complete misunderstanding of the room’s orientation.
Willis-2 glanced at Talc-2, who shrugged and motioned for Talc-1 to enter the larger room. Talc-1 did as asked.
The door at the front of the room opened, and Talc stepped out. He took a seat across from Talbot, and cleared his throat.
“First off, the most important thing. Your cat will be well-cared for, no matter the outcome of this conversation. Great name, by the way.”
Talbot refused to thank him for the compliment.
Talc cleared his throat, and there was a long silence.
“What about my first question?” Talbot asked, his voice trembling.
Talc sighed, then reached below the table.
Several seconds later, he came back up, notably with some difficulty. He slammed Talbot’s notebook down on the table. Next to it, he laid the sheet of seals Talbot had used to traverse space and time.
Talbot was stricken. “How did you-!?”
“Find this? Simple deduction. I’m frankly insulted that you didn’t consider that we’ve been tailing everyone you know for months. Johnson was the only person you could send this to.”
“What did you do to her?!”
“Nothing! We’re not the bad guys here, Talbot. We pulled the package from her porch before she ever got involved. We’d never hurt anyone.”
“Then where am I?” Talbot spat, then rephrased. “I mean… where is the version of me from here? Wait, are you from here or there?”
“I’m from there, assuming you mean your original reality. And Talbot-2 is fine. He’s in the next room.”
Willis winced behind the mirror.
“You never actually answered my question.” Talbot said quietly.
Talc pursed his lips regrettably.
“Well… here’s the thing, Talbot. What I’d like to do is offer you a chance to redeem yourself. I’d like to let you join the APH and help us protect humanity. But you’ve made it clear that that’s not what you want, and if we let you into our fold now, we’d forever be looking over our shoulders, wondering whose side you were truly on. And we can’t just let you go, no no. Your theories would largely be regarded as crackpot, but there are ways to prove these things, and you would certainly find them.”
Talbot swallowed. “Couldn’t you just… you know… erase my memory?”
Talc stifled a laugh. “Unfortunately, this is not Men In Black. Actions have consequences. There are no take-backs. And I’m sorry, Talbot, but this is it for you.” Talc stood, turned on his heel, and left.
“Why the hell’d you wake him up just to tell him that?” Willis muttered behind the glass.
“Hey, wait!” Talbot screamed at him as he departed, but there was no response.
Talbot tried to stand again, but slammed back into his chair as the bonds held.
Willis entered a few minutes later, holding a syringe. He winced at the sight before him. Talbot was hunched over, resting his head on the table. His shoulders were bobbing as though he was sobbing quietly.
Willis approached Talbot and tightened the strap on his right wrist. He moved around him and reached for his left hand, only to see that the strap had been sawed apart, and Talbot’s hand was free.
Willis grabbed his elbow, but Talbot struggled against the man’s grasp. The scientist was trying to keep it firmly on the table under his face.
Frustrated, Willis grabbed Talbot’s head and lifted it back, so he was sitting up straight.
As he beheld Talbot’s face, Willis felt a bolt of fear lance through him. The man was smiling, but it was not a happy smile.
It was the smile of a trapped animal that knew it would take a limb before it went down. With his eyes, Talbot indicated downwards. Willis slowly lowered his vision to the stainless steel tabletop. In Talbot’s hand was a housekey, the teeth worn down from sawing through the leather strap and scratching a symbol into the table. Right under his hand, the surface was pockmarked with the Seal of the Fifth Dimension.
Willis lunged for Talbot’s wrist, but it was too late. The alchemist brought the key across the symbol, carving another scratch to break the Seal and the boundaries between their reality and one far darker. Neither man had time to scream.
Talbot felt himself slip free of the chair, and out of the leather strap around his wrist.
Willis’s grip loosened, and it felt like he was flung across whatever intermediary pathway connected the fourth and fifth dimensions.

2023.05.29 10:42 BruteSentiment Daily Minors Quick-Notes 5/28/23 - Another mixed signal on Kyle Harrison Day
| It was Kyle Harrison day in Sacramento, and he didn’t give up any runs…but the news wasn’t perfect for him. And elsewhere in the system, both San Jose and Eugene had big innings, but only one of them used it to get a win. AAA: Oklahoma City 8, Sacramento 3 Link https://preview.redd.it/56ch6m9kgq2b1.jpg?width=2496&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9d109904f65cb2e347b113f73e9cb2239b2561c9 Sacramento Notes: - This game fell apart for Sacramento in the bullpen after Kyle Harrison led the staff to a great start. Sacramento led 2-0 after six innings, but Oklahoma City stormed back with eight runs in the final three innings, including five runs in the 9th after the game was tied 3-3.
- The big hit was by Will Wilson today, going 1-for-4 with his sixth home run of the season. It’s Wilson’s second home run in four games, and third in the last eight games. But Wilson hasn’t had a multi-hit game since May 14th. He’s got a batting line of .206/.283/.358.
https://twitter.com/RiverCats/status/1662941267683323904?s=20 - Luis Matos picked up a double on a 1-for-4 day with a walk. It’s his third double to go with his second triple in 11 games, with four walks to two strikeouts. His batting line is at .313/.365/.458 in Triple-A.
- Catcher Jacob Nottingham was the only River Cat with multiple hits, going 2-for-4. Nottingham has had a successful debut, going 4-for-8 (.500) with a double over his first two games with the Cats.
https://twitter.com/RiverCats/status/1662949233409007616?s=20 - Starter Kyle Harrison had a solid game, going 3.2 shutout innings, striking out five, but giving up three walks as well as one hit. In three of his last four games, Harrison has gone 3+ innings and still walked three in each (in the other, he walked on in 4.0 innings). In May, Harrison is walking 4.8 batters every 9 innings, but that’s better than April, when he walked 12.1 every 9 innings.
- Cole Waites had another strong game, striking out two in 1.1 innings without allowing a baserunner. That’s six straight scoreless appearances since coming back from the Majors, with three strikeouts to one walk and five hits in 6.1 innings during that span.
- Phoenix Sanders gave up a run in an inning of work, on two hits and a walk. After two appearances in Sacramento after signing as a free agent, he has a 21.60 ERA. He had a 2.00 ERA in Triple-A Norwalk in 9.0 innings with the Orioles organization before he was released.
AA: Binghamton 10, Richmond 9 (10 Innings) Link https://preview.redd.it/osyp71skgq2b1.jpg?width=2496&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e346c7829dd166a400d7b154acf669fd2998fb36 Richmond Notes: - This was a wild ending of a game. Binghamton was leading 7-5 after seven innings, and a Carter Williams home run headlined a 2-run 8th inning to tie the game up. Richmond took the lead in the 9th with a Brady Whalen home run, but a balk gave up the tying run to send things to extras. Marco Luciano gave Richmond another lead in the 10th with a sacrifice fly, but a triple and eventually a bases-loaded walk led to the loss.
- With the home run, Carter Williams went 2-for-5 and got his fourth home run of the season. Williams has a batting line of .227/.389/.375 with the four home runs and a double in 27 games at Double-A.
https://twitter.com/GoSquirrels/status/1662989726389792768?s=20 - Left fielder Brady Whalen hit his second home run of the season (in his fourth game) while going 2-for-4. Whalen is 5-for-15 (.333) with a triple and two home runs since his late start to the season.
https://twitter.com/GoSquirrels/status/1662993571836731393?s=20 - The other home run for Richmond was by catcher Andy Thomas, who hit his fourth of the year. Thomas now has a 6-game hitting streak, going 8-for-25 with two doubles and a home run in that span.
https://twitter.com/GoSquirrels/status/1662987059055788032?s=20 - Marco Luciano was DHing, and went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk. Luciano now has five doubles, four home runs, and four singles, and upped his batting line to .176/.284/.405 after 21 games.
https://twitter.com/GoSquirrels/status/1662974734563266566?s=20 - Shortstop Simon Whiteman went 2-for-4 with a triple and a walk. It’s Whiteman’s first multi-hit game since May 3rd, and his first triple of the season. He’s batting .212/.321/.305 on the season.
- It was another rough game for starting pitcher Kai-Wei Teng, giving up six runs in 3.0 innings, allowing five hits and a walk, but still struck out six. It’s been a rough May for Teng, who has a 6.75 ERA after five starts, though he still has 22 strikeouts to eight walks.
- Another rough outing for Blake Rivera, who walked four, though two were intentional, giving up three runs, two earned, on the walks, one hit, and a bases-loaded balk that blew the save, with one strikeout. Rivera has 23 strikeouts to 17 walks in 18.0 innings, but he now has 17 walks to 12 strikeouts in 11.0 innings.
High-A: Everett 11, Eugene 8 Link https://preview.redd.it/l4lz5belgq2b1.jpg?width=2496&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d07d20befe80536459e2946757961dd718451a18 Eugene Notes: - Eugene wasted a huge comeback in this one. As has happened in the entire homestand, Everett jumped out to an early lead, going up 8-1 after the top of the 4th. But the bottom of the 4th started with back-to-back doubles, but after five walks, three doubles, a single, and a sacrifice fly, Eugene had scored seven runs to tie the game.
- Grant McCray went 2-for-4 with a walk and two doubles, but also got caught stealing once. McCray has gone 6-for-15 over his last four games, but the doubles were his first extra-base hits over that span.
- Logan Wyatt went 2-for-4 with a walk and two doubles as well. Over this series, Wyatt has gone 12-for-27 (.444) with three doubles and a home run. On the season, he’s batting .266/.369/.455 with eight doubles and seven home runs.
- Catcher Adrian Sugastey also had a double on a 2-for-4 day. Sugastey is having a great May, with a batting line of .348/.386/.545, with four doubles and three home runs.
- Starting pitcher Nick Sinacola struggled, giving up two home runs on the way to five runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out five. Sinacola has given up five runs in three of the last four games, and four runs in the other, and has seen his ERA shoot up from 0.86 to 5.56 over that span.
- Reliever Brett Standlee struck out two in a scoreless inning, allowing just one hit. It was a good bounceback after he gave up two home runs in his last appearance. His ERA is at 5.14, with 25 strikeouts to six walks in 21.0 innings.
Low-A: San Jose 12, Modesto 7 Link https://preview.redd.it/4tasikwlgq2b1.jpg?width=2496&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f02565726d20809caeaa315c7b64af8a7bb1a850 San Jose Notes: - San Jose used a big inning to blow away Modesto. Alexander Suarez hit a 2-run home run as the second batter of the 7th inning, but that just started the rally. After four singles, three doubles, and a pair of walks, San Jose scored 10 runs and had all the runs they would need for a 12-7 win.
- The biggest day belonged to Alexander Suarez, going 4-for-5 with a home run and a double. It was the most hits in a game Suarez has had this season (he’s had three hits in a game twice), and it bumped up his batting average from .235 to .262. He now has four doubles and two home runs, to go along with three triples.
- Third baseman Andrew Kachel went 3-for-5 with a double and a sacrifice fly, and an error. It’s his fourth game this season with three hits. His batting line is now up to .311/.397/.492.
- Jose Ramos went 2-for-4 with his 11th double of the season. It’s the first multi-hit game for Ramos since May 6th, a period that has seen his batting average drop from .256 to .209 over that span. He has 11 doubles, three triples, and one home run on the year in 40 games.
- Zach Morgan was playing first, and went 2-for-4 with a walk and his fifth double. Morgan now has the five doubles to go with a triple and two home runs. Over 29 games, he has a batting line of .218/.372/.347.
- Starter Miguel Yajure gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits and a walk in 2.0 innings, with two strikeouts. In three games at San Jose, Yajure now has a 6.00 ERA with nine strikeouts to two walks in 6.0 innings.
- Reliever Luis Moreno struck out three in 1.1 innings without allowing a baserunner. Moreno also had a late start to the season, Moreno now has 11 strikeouts to two walks in 7.2 innings, and has a 3.52 ERA.

2023.05.29 10:19 QuittingKteam Quitting Kratom wiki + other sidebar info.
(
From the sidebar of QuittingKratom. Posting for those who are new, or may need a "refresher" or for those who are on the Reddit mobile app and have difficulty finding the sidebar information. If you encounter someone brand new here, feel free to link this to them. So many of us are "lost" when we're new and have no idea where to start. This wiki is a good place to start, along with the support from the wonderful members of this subreddit. If you're looking for more links to helpful information from the sidebar, scroll to the bottom of this post. I've added them there, after the Wiki information, for convenience.)
So you've decided you want to quit Kratom. Withdrawal Symptoms
You may experience a number of withdrawal symptoms, both physical and psychological. Keep in mind that all humans are affected differently and experiences with symptoms will differ among us.
Physical Withdrawal Symptoms
The most common physical withdrawal symptoms experienced are outlined below.
Restless Leg Syndrome
Also known as RLS, this is the most common symptom of withdrawal. It can be described as an irresistible urge to move one's body to stop uncomfortable or odd sensations. It most commonly affects the legs, but can also affect the arms, torso, and head. Moving the affected body part modulates the sensations, providing temporary relief. On average, this symptom will be almost entirely gone by day 7.
Insomnia
As you would expect with RLS, insomnia is another commonly experienced withdrawal symptom. Lack of sleep usually occurs due to RLS, but it can continue even without RLS present.
Uncontrollable Body Temperature
This withdrawal symptom can be common, yet not as common as the two above. This symptom causes the body to experience drastic changes in temperature within a short period of time. This probably sounds much worse than it really is, but during the day it is fine. At night it involves being cold, putting the covers over you, then being really warm and throwing all the covers off.
Other symptoms
In addition to the above, you may experience a runny nose, teary eyes, sneezing, diarrhea, and an aching body. These are generally not a major problem. For diarrhea, loperamide can help (see below). For aches and pains, OTC pain relievers such as Advil can be useful.
Psychological Withdrawal Symptoms
Commonly referred to as PAWS (Post Acute Withdrawal Symptoms). Usually the psychological withdrawals tend to kick in after the physical withdrawals have passed. Described below are the most common psychological withdrawals that are experienced.
Lethargy
The lack of energy and enthusiasm is the most common psychological withdrawal experienced. This symptom can be minor for some, but it is quite commonly major. Although ironic, a good remedy for this lethargic feeling is exercise. It may be hard to get exercising initially due to the lethargy, but many people experience a huge improvement in their mood afterwards.
Cravings
Cravings are quite commonly experienced by addicts withdrawing from Kratom. Major cravings can cause addicts to relapse if the impulse is acted upon. Usually cravings don't last too long, and they seem to come in waves. Psychologically, cravings can play with your mind. You may find yourself thinking things like "I'll just take it this once, I've already made the decision to quit so I won't do it again".
Depression
Depression can play a big part in relapse when it comes to recovery from Kratom addiction. Although some users have existing mood disorders or depression, the PAWS during Kratom withdrawal hugely amplify these feelings/mindsets. Expect to experience some mild to moderate depressed feelings during PAWS and prepare your mind to acknowledge that these feelings are caused by the Kratom withdrawal. You WILL feel better. Once again exercise is a HUGE help to mitigate the depression experienced during withdrawal. It has been proven that
regular exercise is as effective than the most common anti-depressants.
Taper vs. Cold Turkey
While one method may work for some, it may not work for another. We are all different and unique in many ways, including the way our body reacts to (lack of) substances.
Tapering
Tapering has been tried many times by different people. Some found tapering helpful, others did not. The main advantages of tapering are:
- Little to no physical withdrawals symptoms.
- Not as big of a shock on the body.
- Doesn't affect your day-to-day life as drastically as cold turkey (if you can't take time off work or don't have a weekend free).
Disadvantages of tapering off Kratom are:
- Requires a lot of self control and discipline.
- Easy to make an impulse decision to take more than your schedule planned.
- Although it may not impact your day-to-day life as drastically as cold turkey, the impact will be longer and more drawn out.
Note: Another effective method used is to
taper with stem and vein kratom.
Cold Turkey
The cold turkey method seems to be the more preferable method as well as the most successful. The main advantages are:
- Getting it over and done with, no drawn out symptoms.
- Improvement is felt much sooner since the withdrawals are not drawn out.
- Day-to-day life is not affected for as long as it would be tapering.
Disadvantages of going cold turkey are:
- Physical withdrawal symptoms that are taxing on the body.
- The withdrawals are much worse over a short period of time compared to tapering.
Managing Your Withdrawals
There are a few tried and tested methods to dealing with various withdrawals symptoms. They are described below.
Exercise
The most effective way to make yourself feel better. It has been proven that
regular exercise is as effective than the most common anti-depressants. The effects are very profound, and can remain present for hours. Exercise releases a flood of endorphins, directly stimulating your opioid receptors the same way Kratom does, reducing both physical and psychological withdrawal symptoms. Regular exercise will hasten the recovery process by bringing your body's endorphin system back online. It can be difficult to get started, but if you force yourself, you should find that it gets easier after only a few minutes as your heart starts pumping and the endorphins start flowing. Heavy weightlifting is one of the most efficient methods, in terms of benefits vs. time spent, but prolonged cardiovascular activity (jogging, bicycling, etc.) is also effective. Intense yoga is another option.
Orgasm
When you stop taking Kratom, your sex drive may return with a vengeance. Take advantage of it :). Orgasm, like exercise, causes a release of endorphins.
Meditation
It can be difficult when you are uncomfortable and your mind is racing, but a few minutes of meditation can significantly improve the way you feel. Close your eyes, and let your thoughts flow without trying to control or resist them. Take slow deep breaths, focusing on each inhale and exhale. Try not to think about anything else, but if a thought arises, let it be. Visualize each inhalation as bringing healing energy into your body, and each exhalation as removing negativity. Continue until you feel better, or longer, and repeat the process anytime you feel overwhelmed. Check out
/meditation for great tips on meditation.
Supplements
Loperamide
Warning, kratom and loperamide.. We don't know if loperamide (in the recommended dosage for diarrhea (
https://www.drugs.com/dosage/loperamide.html)) combined with kratom has health risks (in particular heart issues at higher doses), or people could start to abuse it. It had been reported that even the recommended loperamide doses can cause a rebound of withdrawal symptoms after you stop using it . Therfore we don't recommend to use loperamide. Other warnings: At recommended doses, the half-life of loperamide is approximately 10 hours. However, with higher doses, even as little as 16 mg, longer half-lives have been observed (upwards of 41 hours). News videos: "
it's actually potentially even worse than using heroin...",
"Kratom and Loperamide is a dangerous combination".
Supplements
There are a number of drugs and supplements that can improve mood, motivation, and sleep quality. Most of those listed are naturally derived, and many can be easily obtained at such locations as GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, pharmacies, and "natural" grocery stores, as well as online at sites like
AllStarHealth,
Bodybuilding.com, and
Amazon.
- Black seed oil. some qk members reported that they used 3 x 2 teaspoons daily at the beginning.
- L-theanine: Found in green tea, this substance has a calming effect and improves cognition. Useful both during the day and to help with sleep.
- Ashwagandha: The "Indian ginseng," Ashwagandha is an adaptogen that improves overall well-being. Like L-theanine, can be used both day and night. "In anxiety and depression, ashwagandha has been demonstrated to be as effective as some tranquilizers and antidepressant drugs. Specifically, oral administration of ashwagandha for five days suggested anxiety-relieving effects similar to those achieved by the anti-anxiety drug lorazepam (Ativan®), and antidepressant effects similar to those of the prescription antidepressant drug imipramine (Tofranil®)": look here.
- Rhodiola rosea: Another adaptogen, this one has mild stimulating qualities (but without the jitters of caffeine). Best taken during the day. (Warning: Rhodiola has MAOI activity and could potentially interact with other meds/supplements. Be careful, do your research, and start with small amounts.)
- DLPA: A combination of the natural "L" form and the synthetic "D" form of the amino acid phenylalanine, DLPA has been shown to fight depression and reduce pain by boosting dopamine levels and preventing the breakdown of enkephalins (similar to endorphins).
- L-tyrosine: boosts dopamine.
- L-phenylalanine: Try L-tyrosine first. If the results are not satisfactory try L-phenylalanine.
- Valerian root: Sleep aid. Smells terrible but can be rather effective. Common in "sleepy" teas.
- 5-HTP: Precursor to serotonin. Improves mood and sleep. People who are taking antidepressant medications should not take 5-HTP, because in that case common side effects are : *Agitation or restlessness *Confusion *Rapid heart rate and high blood pressure *Dilated pupils *Loss of muscle coordination or twitching muscles *Heavy sweating *Diarrhea *Headache *Shivering *goosebumbs"
- Tryptophan: (propably superior to 5-HTP).
- SAM-e: Is a quick acting antidepressant.
- Chamomile and passion flower: These two herbs, widely available as teas, can help with anxiety and insomnia. At least one ex-Kratom addict has reported that, in does of 2-4 teabags, they can be very effective. WARNING: Passion flower is a MAO inhibitor, don't use it together with kratom.
- Melatonin: The body's sleep hormone, used for regulating the sleep/wake cycle. Tells the body that it's time to sleep. Taking too much (more than a milligram or two) can screw up the body's circadian rhythm and have the opposite of the intended effect. Good in combination with valerian root and 5-HTP. Some feel very groggy after taking melatonin.
- Kava: An herb that reduces anxiety, but can be hit-or-miss when it comes to sleep.
- Chocolate: Contains phenethylamine, which reduces anxiety and improves mood and cognition. Buy a generous amount of dark chocolate with a high cacao concentration, and eat as much of it as you want. The more, the better. Alternatively, phenethylamine is available as a supplement.
- Magnesium: Helps with sleep. Many people believe that Calcium needs to be taking with Magnesium for absorption, but this is not true. Calcium and Magnesium actually compete for the same transport system into the blood so it is better to take them at different times during the day. The only time this competition is eliminated is in the case where calcium and magnesium are bound to a single amino acid and are called calcium and magnesium amino acid chelates, as opposed to calcium carbonate/citrate or magnesium oxide/citrate. Minerals in the amino acid chelate form have double the absorption rate of calcium carbonate and magnesium oxide because they do not have to be altered in order to enter the bloodstream. Source.
- Cannabis: Given its legal status, not everybody is able or willing to obtain it, but cannabis can potentially aid with a wide spectrum of withdrawal symptoms. Indica-dominant strains are recommended for insomnia and anxiety, while Sativas are better suited for improving mood, motivation, and appetite. (However, it should be noted that Sativas can worsen anxiety in some cases.) Medical dispensaries, if you have access, are the best option due to the wide variety of strains available. If you have had problems with other drugs or drug substitution in the past, it is advised not to use Cannabis after quitting Kratom as it may lead to another substitution.
Warning:
It's best to avoid using antihistamines (diphenhydramine, dimenhydrinate, hydroxyzine etc.) such as those found in Benadryl, Dramamine, NyQuil, Unisom, and Tylenol PM. While they can produce drowsiness under normal conditions, they are well known for exacerbating Restless Leg Syndrome, which will make your insomnia worse, not better.
Prescription drugs
In addition, there are various prescription drugs that can be of assistance. The ones listed below are prescription-only. These are not necessarily recommended; do your research before considering them. Be especially careful if you are taking any psychiatric prescriptions, such as SSRIs, MAOIs, or Wellbutrin. The following information is not a substitute for medical advice. Always consult your doctor. [We do not recommend to use this medications together with Kratom].
- Gabapentin: Gabapentin is an epilepsy and nerve pain drug, which is also prescribed for the restless leg syndrome. The drug acts as a sedative. It also helps with sleep and gives you energy. Don't abuse it, gabapentin causes a withdrawal syndrome if you use it for too long (use it maximal 5-6 days). Drug experts say the effects of using gabapentin for long periods of time or in very high quantities, particularly among sensitive populations like pregnant women, are not well-known. Attention:"treatment with gabapentin is associated with a substantial increase in the risk of opioid-related death".
- Clonidine: Due to its lack of abuse potential, doctors will generally not hesitate to prescribe it for a patient undergoing withdrawals. Clonidine can "stop" an opioid withdrawal relatively effectively, which is (simplified) due to the following mode of action: Adrenaline docks onto two receptors when released: α1 and α2. Clonidine docks onto α2-adrenergic receptors and “blocks” them. Also lowering blood pressure, works against the "adrenaline rush". Clonidine has an idiosyncrasy, i.e. the first dose of the active ingredient triggers an effect opposite to the actual effect !. Clonidine doses must be slowly increased, starting at a low dose. It should also be noted that clonidine must not be discontinued immediately; the dose has to be slowly reduced, because otherwise there can be a blood pressure crisis - with an already destabilized blood pressure (due to withdrawal), extreme caution is required here and we strongly recommend that treatment with clonidine is only carried out under medical supervision. Existing depression can be exacerbated or a new depression can be triggered by using clonidine. Existing depression can be exacerbated or a new depression can be triggered by using clonidine.
- Modafinil/adrafinil (Provigil, Nuvigil): [Warning: Do not use Modafinil together with Kratom (it may cause seizures)] A unique, non-euphoric stimulant, used to treat narcolepsy, shift-work disorders, and by Air Force pilots as a replacement for amphetamine. This drug, at levels of 100-200mg per day, can relieve the malaise and lack of motivation associated with withdrawal. Should not be taken within 12 hours of bedtime. While Modafinil is under Schedule IV in the US, Adrafinil, which metabolizes to Modafinil in the liver, is unscheduled and can be easily purchased.
- Selegiline (L-deprenyl): A MAO-B inhibitor used to treat Parkinson's, this drug increases levels of dopamine in the brain and has been shown to increase lifespan in rats. Unlike traditional MAOIs, selegiline does not require dietary restrictions, and is generally considered quite safe at levels of 5-10mg. Do not take near bedtime. Unscheduled in the US. .
Warning:
Be mindful of the possibility of drug substitution. With addiction, drug substitution is a common problem when going through recovery. With all CNS depressant drugs (antidepressants, benzodiazepines, neuroleptics), it should be kept in mind that these drugs sedate in the long term and can trigger a so-called 'hangover', ie. they also lead to additional exhaustion during the day. In some cases, this can be perceived as a burden and can lead to losing sight of the desired goal or lowering the motivation to endure the withdrawal. Whether drug treatment makes the withdrawal easier or more difficult depends on personal factors and cannot be determined in general. Remember that your body can regenerate itself best and fastest if it is not exposed to other stresses.
Stem and Vein Kratom
Although total alkaloid levels are lower than in leaf, there is supposedly relatively more mitragynine present in S&V. The levels of mitraphylline, rhynchophylline (related to mitragynine) and corynantheidine are higher. In kratom communities on the internet it is sometimes reported that S&V can reduce tolerance to kratom, but this seems not to be the case. Anecdotal reports claim that S&V can be useful for mitigating withdrawal symptoms, and accelerating the brain's recovery from kratom addiction. There is a great guide on
using stem and vein kratom to taper off here.
Relapse
Relapse is a normal part of recovery. It has happened to every single one of us. Try not to beat yourself up about it or feel like you are worthless and useless. That doesn't help a thing. It is just a small bump in your road to recovery. All you can do is get back up, dust yourself off and get back to quitting as soon as you are ready. You will know when you are ready.

2023.05.29 10:18 rvps2001 Russia-Ukraine Daily Briefing
2023.05.29 10:04 evileyex99 I cut a longtime friend off over my boyfriend
I (M23) have a best friend I’ve known since high school, I’ll call her Alice (F23) (FYI: Alice has a record for lying about pointless shit all the time, either for sympathy or attention, which will be important later), and we started attending the same university in fall of 2022, which was really exciting. Around mid-September, I met a really introverted but sweet guy that I’ll call Tommy (M34), and yes, I know it’s a big age gap, but I’m an adult so whatever. Anyway, we hit it off, and after a few days of talking on campus, he asks me for drinks, and obviously I say yes.
The date goes great, and we make it official, and Alice really didn’t like that. She would tell me how she has a “bad feeling about Tommy” because he “comes off creepy”. For context: Tommy is just quiet and out of the way, I will admit, he has a really hard time with social queues, and doesn’t really know how to interact with people, but you can tell he genuinely tries. After about a couple weeks of dating, Tommy invites me for a weekend trip to his hometown (he comes from a small city that has beautiful scenery and lots to do/see).
When I tell Alice about my plans, she got really mad, and scolded me for pretty much “setting myself up to be [unalived]”, which we had a huge fight about. I went on the trip, and it was fantastic, and when we came back, Alice made a sarcastic remark that she’s “surprised to see me alive”, which stung, but I ignored it.
Here’s where she really started ticking me off.
After she got dumped by a one night stand, Alice called me (I was at Tommy’s place at the time), crying hysterically. So reluctantly, I tell her where I am (admittedly, it was really shitty of me to just invite her without asking Tommy first), and she shows up about an hour later. Even though Tommy was obviously not expecting a guest, he was super nice (albeit awkward) about it, offering Alice food (which she rudely declined), and even accommodated her to stay the night (it was around 1:00 a.m, and it was really cold).
She bugs me repeatedly about how she doesn’t feel comfortable sleeping alone (again… she has a track record for lying for attention), and demands I sleep in the same bed as her in the guest bedroom, instead of with my boyfriend. As annoyed as I was, to pacify her, I just agreed, and we all went to bed. Important side note: Tommy has two bathrooms, and one of them is under renovations, so I just use the other one.
Around 3:30 ish in the morning, she wakes me up frantically, like she’d seen a ghost. I thought she was having a nightmare or something, but imagine my surprise when she looks at me dead in the eyes and goes “Tommy has a wall of pictures of you in his bathroom, he saw me looking, and threatened to [k word] me.”
WHAT?! I already didn’t believe her (1. She hated Tommy from the start (I think because we stopped hanging out as much) and 2. She’s a pathological liar), but she looked legitimately scared, like the type of fear you can’t fake. So, I asked her to show me.
When we get to the bathroom, I open the door just to find paint supplies and half done tiles, and when I demand an explanation, she starts playing dumb. “But it was right here”, “I swear I’m not lying”, etc. But the greatest excuse she came up with was “he must’ve taken it down when I came to wake you up.”
I tell her that that’s not possible, and she gets offended that I don’t believe her. The commotion of us arguing woke Tommy up, and he came to see if we’re okay. Alice starts pointing at him accusingly, and yelling at him that he’s a creep, and has plans of potentially ending my life.
This is where I snap. I yelled at Alice to get out, because Tommy’s been nothing but kind to me, and all she’s done is try and ruin it. Alice gets mad and tells me “when they drag your torso out of the river on the news, don’t say I didn’t tell you”, and leaves.
It’s been months, and we’ve still not spoken, and Tommy and I’s relationship is just as amazing. I feel kind of guilty ending such a long friendship like that, but at the same time, enough is enough.

San Francisco in The Guardian Seems to have an overall positive take on future possibilities of San Francisco, but thin on details of how converting offices to residential space would happen. Biggest impediment is city government, which the article mentions.

2023.05.29 09:01 The_Transcendant On the wild rose: Alberta's last fifty years and its next few hours
| Tomorrow. Canada will see one of its wildest elections in recent memory, tomorrow. Even for an American dominated sub I’m surprised it’s fallen this far under the radar. In short, it’s very important, very divisive and very, very close. Alberta is a really unique case because politically speaking, it’s so far removed from the rest of the country. Alberta separatism, while still fringe, is finding more and more popular support over there. Conservative votes are so concentrated in Alberta and in the rest of the rural prairies that the CPC actually won the federal popular vote in both 2019 and 2021 despite losing badly to the Liberals in terms of seats, which are what actually matter. Nearly every one of their regional stereotypes hinges on how right wing they are. Alberta is built different. To show why this is I’m going to go over the political history of the province and what has lead up to now. ALBERTA LORE It is the people who govern, or at least we say. And it goes without saying who has governed Alberta for the past 80 years. Like the western United States and the other prairie provinces, Alberta started out as a stronghold of progressive populism, but in 1935 the right wing populist Social Credit party took power from the left-wing agrarians, and held it uninterrupted until 1971 when they lost to the Progressive Conservatives, who would govern for even longer. Alberta has only changed governments 5 times in its history. This kind of de facto one party system can only exist for a reason, and the reason was oil. The oil boom began at the tail end of the Socred days. The urbanization that oil caused is what brought the PC’s into power, and the insane amount of wealth that oil conjured is what kept them there eternally. And I do mean insane. During oil booms, literally anyone could find an oil rig job paying six figures; hamlets became small cities and small cities became metropolises of over a million people. Take Calgary, the biggest city in the province. It is more sprawling than a well planned city, yet it’s ranked the third most livable in the world, chiefly because of how much rainbow fucking monopoly money it sees. So Alberta had no qualms with becoming a petrostate - why would they? They became one of the richest places on earth. The PC’s were far from radical; they threw their billions at public works, and they weren’t particularly conservative socially. They never really made anyone mad. Sparing 1993 (when they still kept their 50% + 1), the PC’s never faced any real opposition from the left, right, or centre, top, or bottom. Remember, we are talking about decades. This is 1975, but this isn't anything special. They all looked like this in the early PC era. This did change, though. Think back to whatever the Tea Party was in the US; what it stood for, what ignited it, what kept it burning. As the PC leadership grew stale and moldy, straying from “true conservatism” by deficiting hard and lobbing vast sums of money back at the oil industry, the hard right went “fuck it” and left. In 2008, The Alberta Alliance, which had exactly one representative, merged with the Wildrose party (named for Alberta's designated flower), which had exactly zero, to create a real conservative alternative. They ultimately failed to build any real sort of momentum in the 2008 provincial election. Their leader and sole MLA, Paul Hinman, lost re-election and stepped down. In their 2009 leadership election, lobbyist Danielle Smith took his place. Now Alberta was deep into the Great Recession, and the party was genuinely optimistic now, because PC premier Ed Stelmach’s popularity was tanking among the right. In a Calgary by-election that year, Paul Hinman ran and won in a seat that had been held by the PC’s since 1969. This was a W that gave the Wildrose party the momentum and legitimacy that they desperately needed. Every 30 or 40 years, we get tired of the government that’s in power and we sweep them out and we look to a new alternative. I think we have an opportunity to catch one of those historic waves. - Danielle Smith, upon being named Wildrose Alliance leader. I straight up ripped this shit from wiki but it encapsulates it all better than anything else I could write. In 2011, the ever more unpopular Ed Stelmach resigned and was replaced by scandal-plagued Alison Redford. There was another election to come in 2012, and Wildrose was leading. Looking at every poll taken right up until election day, the Progressive Conservative hegemony seemed to be coming to an end. Then came the casting of the ballots, and the results were a fat fucking almost-nothingburger for Danielle Smith (who definitely wasn’t free of controversy herself). Her party was largely confined to the province’s southern rural areas - god-fearing, gun-toting and ram-ranching even by Alberta standards. The PC’s were down from 72 to 61 seats in the assembly while Wildrose, still the official opposition, was 10 points behind them in the PV and only won 17. Many of those seats came from the re-election of former PC MLAs who crossed the floor during Stelbach’s term. 2012. If polls were right, most of this would have been green and Danielle Smith would be in charge a decade earlier. In 2014, the PC dynasty became the longest lasting in Albertan history. Also in 2014, Alison Redford resigned from the premiership with an 18% approval rating, being succeeded by cabinet minister Jim Prentice. The walls were falling in for the party, but as fate would have it, they were for the Wildrose party, too. Ten of their 17 MLAs, including Danielle Smith, defected to the PC Party citing concerns with Danielle Smith and her leadership. In 2015, when Prentice’s poll numbers actually looked okay for the first time in a while, he called an election. In short, a momentous fuck up. Both the Progressive Conservatives and the Wildrose party (now led by Brian Jean) were stuck in an endless cycle of chimpanzeenian shit flinging, and they divided the dominant right wing vote almost perfectly in half. Neither of them would win. Neither would the Alberta Liberal Party, the only non-conservative party with any legitimacy. Nay, after the 2015 election the majority in the legislative assembly was held by Rachel Notley’s social-democratic Alberta New Democratic Party. The NDP They, by virtue of being left of centre in Alberta, had been a meme party until the day they weren’t. They swept the capital city of Edmonton and (with an insane amount of protest voting and vote splitting, as they only got 40%) picked up dozens of seats in Calgary and the rurals. Needless to say, a big deal this was. 2015. Without near-perfect Wildrose/PC vote splitting, most of those Calgary and northern seats would not be orange. The PC party, Alberta's forever governors, had been relegated to the humiliating time out corner of third place. The Wildrose party became the official oppositing to the ANDP's governing majority. Notley and her party got adjusted to the position as well as they could have; oil prices were collapsing and the time, so her government put an intense focus on public works and on desperately needed diversification of what was basically resembled a Gulf State economy. She governed as a competent centrist, shying away from anything that could be seen as anti-capitalist or environmentalist. Alberta's NDP government openly clashed with neighbouring British Columbia's NDP government over the Trans-mountain pipeline, which shipped oil from the sands and wells in Alberta across the Rockies to ports in greater Vancouver. In American terms, she was a Blue Dog. She understood what she needed to do to win in her province. Regardless of what she did, though, she was not in any position to win. In 2017, the Progressive Conservatives elected Calgary MLA Jason Kenney as they leader, who ran with the intent of uniting the two right wing parties. This had happened on the federal level in 2003, and it led to Calgary's Stephen Harper being Prime Minister for over a decade after a long period of Liberal rule. Kenney did exactly that, and won the leadership contest of the new United Conservative Party with a wide majority. This was all happening while Justin Trudeau's federal Liberal government, which had just recently buried Harper in a landslide, was suffering enormous backlash in western Canada, mostly due to policies like his carbon tax, but also due to being Fr*nch and secretly Fidel's son. The 2019 federal election was fought largely on the environment and Greta Thunberg, and the federal Conservatives won unprecedented margins in the prairies, nearing 90% of the vote in some rural Alberta and Saskatchewan seats. The 2019 Albertan general election happened months before "how dare you", but it was much the same. Notley put up as much of a fight as she could, but the UCP still swept and won the PV by over 20 points. 2019, a 20 point UCP landslide. If the federal NDP did this well Jagmeet would be PM. It seemed as though 2015-2019 was just an aberration, and the newly formed UCP would govern for another half century until the next Wildrose saga. Kenney was governing exactly how a leader of a PC-Wildrose merger party would be expected to govern, and he wasn't facing much opposition from the centre right or the far right. Then COVID hit. Compared to most other premiers in the country and most other countries on earth, Kenney imposed moderate restrictions: a public health emergency and a vaccine passport. He tried to promote staying home, wearing masks, and getting vaccinated. He did this, however, while travelling out of province for the holidays. Decidedly not a good look. The former Wildrose wing of the party was pissed, to say the least. Over the span of 2021, he faced a barrage of attacks from hard right rural MPs in his own party, and bled continuously more support to QAnon-adjacent Alberta independence splinter parties. By now, the NDP had a considerable lead in provincial polls. In September of that year, his own party agreed to hold a no-confidence vote against him in the following spring due to him refusal to resign or abolish all COVID restrictions. He won that no-confidence motion with 51% percent of the vote, but resigned anyway in disgrace. It was Over. WHERE WE ARE NOW Running to replace him were hard right Brian Jean, hard right Todd Loewen, hard right Travis Toews, and of course, hard right Danielle Smith, who pretty narrowly beat Toews. A display of where the UPC was already heading, any moderates were more or less irrelevant in the race. Danielle Smith, once the undisputed leader of Alberta's Wildrose far right, was now its premier. And for the most part, she spends her days comparing vaccinated people to nazis (she half assed an apology to be fair) and whining about the WEF. I can fairly confidently say that she's insane, at least by Canadian standards if not by those of America. (I can give more examples of goofy shit she's uttered but I want to sleep right now). Have I mentioned that Alberta has a slight conservative tilt? You could definitely tell if you looked at opinion polls, where the UCP now has a very slight edge over the NDP despite Rachel Notley clearly distancing herself from the left, feuding with the federal New Democratic Party. I honestly believe that there's a large percentage of people in Alberta, maybe even close to 50%, who will start violently convulsing if they're forced to check a ballot for a left-leaning party. People who genuinely, truly believe that Notley is a tyrant and a communist. This brings us to now. A dead heat election between the UCP and NDP, uncannily similar to the 2020 presidential. The polarization and Americanization of our politics is rearing its ugly head. It's tearing so many families apart. These kinds of elections, be it Notley vs. Smith, Trump vs. Biden, Hobbs vs. Lake, all have this kind of desperate vibe. I'm sure you can feel it. You notice the desperation in the air if you went to Alberta anytime in the past couple months. I know a few people in Alberta, and I can almost sense it emanating from them. I've heard quite a few anecdotes about lifelong conservatives with, like, Margaret Thatcher figurines in jars, who are voting for their local NDP candidates this time around because they look at the present UCP and see only an imported brand of lunacy. There's another side, I'm sure, but I won't pretend to see it. I have no idea how this will pan out, and I don't know if I want to know. I'm typing this around midnight because this shit is just wild. It should not be like this. But this is how it is, and only time will tell what happens next. submitted by The_Transcendant to AngryObservation [link] [comments] |
2023.05.29 08:54 Rekartinnovations RRR of waste management
| waste management Welcome, waste warriors, to another exciting blog post! Today, we delve into the world of waste management and explore the powerful concept of RRR: Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling. Waste is a global challenge, but by adopting these three strategies, we can make a significant positive impact on our environment and create a more sustainable future. So, let’s gear up and embark on this journey of waste management! Reducing: Less is More! Did you know that reducing waste is the first step towards a greener world? When we reduce, we consciously make an effort to consume less and avoid unnecessary waste. It’s like going on a diet, but for waste! By making small changes in our daily lives, such as carrying reusable bags, saying no to single-use plastics, and opting for eco-friendly packaging, we can minimize the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. Interesting Fact: The average American generates about 4.5 pounds of waste per day, but by practicing waste reduction techniques, each person has the potential to save up to 1,000 pounds of waste annually! Reusing: The Art of Giving Items a Second Life! Have you ever heard the phrase, “One person’s trash is another person’s treasure”? Well, that’s the essence of reusing! Instead of throwing things away, we can find creative ways to give them a new purpose and extend their lifespan. From donating clothes and furniture to repurposing containers and jars, reusing not only reduces waste but also saves valuable resources and energy that would have been used in manufacturing new products. Interesting Fact: Did you know that recycling one ton of paper can save around 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, and 7,000 gallons of water? Reusing items not only helps the environment but also conserves precious resources! Recycling: Closing the Loop and Transforming Waste Ah, recycling! It’s like magic but for waste. When we recycle, we collect materials such as paper, plastic, glass, and metal, and transform them into new products. By doing so, we reduce the need for raw materials, save energy, and prevent valuable resources from going to waste. Recycling is a powerful tool in waste management, but it requires active participation from individuals, businesses, and communities to create a sustainable recycling infrastructure. Interesting Fact: Recycling a single aluminum can saves enough energy to power a television for three hours! Imagine the energy we can save by recycling all those cans, bottles, and containers. Engage and Take Action: Now that we’ve explored the incredible RRR trio of waste management, it’s time for action! Here are a few simple steps you can take to become a waste management superhero: - Start with small changes: Carry a reusable water bottle, use cloth bags for shopping, and say no to single-use plastics.
- Repurpose and upcycle: Get creative and find new uses for items before considering them as waste. You’ll be amazed at what you can create!
- Educate and inspire: Spread the word about waste reduction, reuse, and recycling. Encourage your friends, family, and community to join the movement.
Conclusion: By embracing the principles of Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling, we can make a substantial impact on waste management and create a more sustainable future. Remember, every action, no matter how small, counts towards building a greener world. So, let’s join hands and become waste warriors because together, we can make a difference! Stay tuned for more exciting content on sustainability, waste management, and environmental conservation. Until next time, keep reducing, reusing, and recycling! submitted by Rekartinnovations to u/Rekartinnovations [link] [comments] |
2023.05.29 08:51 ScantlyChad [BATTLE] The Ottoman-Safavid War of 1517-1518
Early Spring, 1518
Persia
Deep in the Persian interior of Shah Ismail's empire, the Safavid army camp was returning to life with the dawn of a new campaigning season. Military operations had come to an expected halt with the coming of the 1517 winter, with levies marching back to their homes, nomadic warrior clans migrating to fairer fields, and military leadership (normally) taking the time to rest and revitalize. However,
the numerous setbacks of the prior year's campaign had not been kind to the health of Ismail, or to that of his realm.
When the Shah emerged from his winter quarters to head up the army for the next round of war, it immediately sparked alarm among his followers that Ismail looked worse now than he did just a few months ago. The winter's isolation had compounded his descent from the prophecy of a legendary poet-warrior to that of a humbled, bedraggled sot. He now carried himself with less care and confidence. His messy hair and beard remained untrimmed. Even now when he donned his armor, which was tailored to fit the once-great warrior, it now appeared to be made for a much different man much larger than him.
It was this Ismail that would emerge from the tent in the Spring of 1518. It was this Ismail that would sit and squint to the horizon, watching for contingents of his nomadic and levied army to march back to his main camp. It was this Ismail that would scowl as his sergeants noted the desertions among his ranks that had occurred over the winter, resulting in a smaller army that had been anticipated. And it was this Ismail that had delayed marching out with such a small army, until the awful realization came upon him and that he could delay no more, that this decimated army would be the one which he would lead.
This army would also be less coherent and effective than the previous armies fielded by the Shah. Though he dreaded to address such glaring issues, the truth of the matter was that the defeats of last year had broken down the prestige and power of the militant Safavid cause, and thus, with it, the strict adherence of the nomadic Qizilbash warriors. Long-standing clan rivalries which had previously been frozen in place by their shared cause of fighting for the
Mahdi were now once again returning as Ismail's reputation melted away. The Qilizbash of this year might be just as likely to engage in savagery against their own realm as they would to their enemies.
And finally, there came to that issue of military intelligence. Ismail's plans the year prior had been dictated by the belief that he had been fed working military intelligence from his spies within the Ottoman Empire. The failures of his army in their failed Spring offensive would reveal that such intelligence had been faulty, and purposefully so. Though this source of information would continue to feed him military intelligence of where and when the Ottoman Imperial Army had planned to strike, Ismail had come to the decision that he would be better off ignoring such intelligence this year. There's an old saying in Tabriz- and although such a saying is also known in Tehran, it is probably also well known amongst those in Tabriz as well- and this saying is as follows:
fool me once, shame on - shame on you. Fool me - you can't get fooled again. And with his own health and that of his army on such a positive footing, Ismail set off on campaign, looking to drive the invaders from his realm. While a small contingent under
Abdal Beg Talish went south, the majority of the army would be marching north from which to counter any enemy offensives out of Tabriz, in addition to another smaller contingent under
Durmish Khan Shamlu heading north in order to counter Georgian advances in Shirvan.
Tabriz
Though the invaders had also paused their campaigns over the winter, the occupied territories of Kurdistan and Armenia remained hubs of activity just as they had been in the campaigning seasons. A carefully maintained network of grain imports supported by caravans and guarded by Imperial and Georgian patrols helped to support the wintering armies on the frontlines. When these armies would muster themselves in the spring, they would find that this expensive supply network had paid off, and that they would not be suffering the same levels of desertion that would cripple their foes.
As the Georgian-Ottoman occupation forces of the city resumed their work in fortifying the city for an expected Safavid counterattack, a large Georgian contingent headed by King Giorgi would set off eastward, to besiege the city of Ardibil
that had evaded the permanent capture of the Georgian army so many years ago. This speed of this march would be hampered by fierce local resistance, though the Georgians were able to evade losses due to the large size of their army which afforded them to make a number of security measures aimed at countering ambushes and raids carried out by the locals. Bostanabad surrendered to the invaders upon seeing such a sizable force, and Duzduzan would fall to the invaders after a quick siege hurried through a daring assault on the walls commanded by the King. When the walls of Sarab were reached, the city was methodically surrounded, a siege camp was constructed, and the construction of sieges engines would be started by the royal engineers. As the Georgian army settled in for what they expected to be another quick siege, the Safavid army headed up by Shah Ismail marched northward to counter them before the fall of the city and the eventual fall of Ardibil along with it.
Though this Georgian army would hold the advantage of army size over the Safavid force, their lack of light scout cavalry would hurt them quite immensely, as they were unable to report and respond to the threat of Ismail's incoming army until he was just about to strike.
Though the Georgian army fought as ably as they could, the unexpected nature of the Safavid attack was damaging. Qizilbash cavalry charged from the hills and into the Georgian camp aided by repeated bombardments from Safavid archers, causing a great deal of casualties and chaos among the Georgian ranks. This army was only saved from complete rout and defeat when the brave King Giorgi and his knights rallied his scattered men into carrying out a counterattack, temporarily forcing Ismail's forces away from the field. Recognizing that Ardibil itself was a secondary objective not worth such heavy losses, a retreat to Tabriz was ordered, in which the disorganized Georgian army somehow
just managed to carry out as another round of Safavid attacks began on their supply and rear lines.
Shirvan
Like the Georgian army in the south, this army to the north would also see much in the way of early victories. Over the winter, Georgian agents had managed to convince Hasan Sultan, the exiled Khan of Shaki, into supporting their advance against Shah Ismail. Prince Demetre's army in this region swelled in size with the arrival of Hasan Sultan and his supporters.
But like the army to the south, this army would also be hampered in early spring by the arrival of Safavid forces in the region. Durmish Khan Shamlu and his men would square off with those of the Sultan and the Prince, and for many weeks, skirmishes would be fought in this region, with both attempting to outmaneuver the other in a pitched battle.
Northern Iraq
Fresh from their winter rest, the Ottoman Army began their 1518 campaign with a southward advance on the city of Mosul. Led by Grand Vizier Piri Mehmed Pasha, this army would see its numbers also bolstered by local allies, though allies were more a matter of symbolism than of actual military support, as the local Kurdish support for the Ottoman cause had translated more into pledges of fealty rather than going so far as to support with large numbers of Kurdish tribal soldiers as the Ottoman leaders would have hoped.
Though the city of Mosul refused to surrender, it fell after a short siege. The army advanced, and then Erbil fell in the same manner. Though Abdal Beg Talish's forces had, by this time, arrived in the region to support local resistance against the advancing Ottoman army, the massive size of the Ottoman army and its superior composition of both heavy and light cavalry allowed for it to easily counter the raids, ambushes, and skirmishes carried out by Safavid forces that had plagued the Georgian army.
With two key cities under their thumb and local resistance pacified, the Grand Vizier looked to the lands of the south that lay open to his armies. With such a massive force and such little resistance before him, how could the Ottoman advance be stopped?
Late Spring, 1518
Tabriz
The victory of Ismail at the Battle of Sarab had done wonders to restore his reputation among his forces. While he couldn't fully repair the tribal fractures that had started to emerge in his army structure, nor could he rally up reinforcements from the ranks of deserters, he could march on Tabriz and start the process of liberating his realm from enemy occupation. With the Spring season now in full swing, Ismail marched at the head of his revitalized army as they advanced forward towards Tabriz, on the tail of the retreating Georgian army.
Though perhaps if the Shah knew what laid before him, perhaps if he had not been so thoroughly deceived by military intelligence in the previous year and had been more willing to listen to it this year, he might not have marched forward with such misplaced confidence, and perhaps he would caution such brazen use of his army. But with the fresh taste of one victory, the Shah was eager for another. He was hell-bent on restoring his prophesized reputation with another great victory, and so he would be looking for any opportunity to engage his retreating opponent before him.
The Georgians had prepared well in the event that the Ismail return to Tabriz. Food and supplies had been carted into the city, construction teams worked constantly to repair the walls, letters were pre-written to Ottoman allies and Prince Demetre requesting relief, and the relief was provided to the citizens of Tabriz in order to secure their loyalty, at least temporarily, all done in the event of a coming siege.
The defeated Georgian army made their way into the safety of the walls of the city. Although they didn't prefer being stuck inside the city for the siege, the rushed nature of their rtreat and the sudden advance of the Sfavaid left the Georgian Kings no choice but to remain in the walls during the siege. Letters were sent north and south, and soon after the Safavid army arrived in the region, surrounded the city, and began to besiege. The roles were now reversed. The second siege of Tabriz had begun.
Shirvan
Over the course of the Spring, the armies of Prince Demetre and Hasan Sultan had managed to triumph over Durmish Khan Shamlu, with the skirmishes decided well in their favor. As Safavid forces began to retreat from the region, Prince Demtre was also forced to retreat as his armies marched south to relieve Tabriz. Hasan Sultan opted to remain in the region to countinue the fight for his homeland, though with the Georgian withdrawal the Safavids returned to the field and now they were the ones with the upper hand in the skirmishes over the region, erasing gains made by the invading forces over the past few weeks.
Iraq
It was at this point that Ottoman forces had now split into four. For an ordinary army, this would be a risky move, but for an army as large and as organized as the Ottoman army, it would
probably not be such a huge issue. The first of these groups would return to Tabriz in order to relieve the siege. The second would advance on Baghdad and begin a siege, while the third and fourth groups would secure flanks of the Ottoman advance through Iraq.
Safavid resistance to the Ottoman advance remained minimal, even with the forces of Abdal Beg Talish operating in the region. Recognizing both that the Ottoman army was headed for Baghdad and that they were nothing more a small buzz against the constant, unwavering drone of Imperial power, Abdal Beg Talish decided to cancel the strategy of harassments and chose to reinforce the city in order to attempt to stall the Ottomans with a protracted siege of Baghdad.
Abdal Beg Talish and his men beat the Ottomans to the city, but it was after this that what little Safavid power remained in the region fell apart. As the Ottomans approached the walls of Baghdad, they offered the Abdal a chance to surrender, which was refused.
However, as the Ottomans then settled into siege positions, Abdal remained at the walls. Perhaps he intended to inspire his men by leading from the front, but upon witnessing the Ottomans cast their massive siege guns before his very eyes, Abdal lost the stomach to fight, surrendered the city to the Grand Vizier, and in the chaos of it all, then fled eastward with a few followers to link up with Shah Ismail. Piri Mehmed Pasha elected not to pursue the yellow-bellied fool and instead ordered a two-day celebration for the army that now occupied the city of Baghdad. The Ottoman armies on the flanks continued to push southward, meeting almost no resistance from the locals who had no strong desire to support their oppressive Safavid overlords.
Summer, 1518
Tabriz
Nobody was safe from the blazing heat of the Tabrizi summer, defenders and besiegers alike.
For the past few months, the city had suffered under siege from Safavid siege, though this suffering was eased by the abundance of food and supply within the walls of the city. The shelling of Ismail's mortars did temporarily halt when he ordered his engineers to divert the Aji Chay away from the city in order to cut off their vital supply of water, though this effort was halted when the Georgians sallied out from their walls to ambush the engineers. The city's water supply was saved, though the Georgians did suffer moderate casualties in the process.
The siege continued on for a few miserable weeks with slow progress against the walls made by mortars and sappers, and losses on both sides compounded by heat exhaustion. This state of the siege would only be broken with news of incoming relief forces from the north and the south.
Ottoman-Georgian strength had now swelled to double that of the Safavids, but their numbers were spread out into three groups. Like at
Alesia, the besieging Safavid forces were starting to be surrounded by incoming relief forces, though the coordination of these scattered relief forces remained in question as communication was spotty at best as the Safavid forces proved to be a major hurdle for messages.
Looking to score another victory, Ismail ordered his troops to prepare for a quick attack on the scattered relief forces, whilst also preparing for any possible attack from the forces within Tabriz who might seek to sally out at this moment. By ordering such a rapid attack, he hoped to further scatter his foes before they could further communicate any coordinated attacks on his own army.
With little preparation, Ismail split his army into three and launched the attacks on his enemies. Though poorly coordinated, the rapid nature of his attacks caught his enemies off guard. The Georgian relief force under Prince Demetre could only weather the sudden attack for a short period of time before they were beaten from the field and their forces scattered. The Ottoman forces, which were much more numerous in size, were also forced to pull back, though it was the heroics of the Janissaries and their deployment of Tabur Cenci formation that saved the day. While a number of Azabs pulled back, the Janissaries held strong and the center could not be broken. The Ottoman cavalry fared well against their Safavid counterparts, and the army was able to hold, though not without significant losses. In the end, the mounting losses convinced the Ottoman commander to withdraw and regroup with his retreating forces, in order to save the fight for another day.
It was during this attack that the Georgian army within Tabriz under the Co-Kings also decided to seize the moment and ordered a counter attack on the Safavid forces remained stuck into the siege. The gates flew open as the army sallied forth to attack the Safavid siege camps, though the poor coordination of both armies meant high casualties suffered by both sides.
By now, the second siege of Tabriz had turned into a Battle of the Plains of Tabriz, and a very chaotic battle at that. Ismail's army had completely lost all semblance of coordination in his mad quest for a major victory, and now they were just as scattered about as his opponent. His attempts to regroup his tribal warriors under his own command had mixed success, resulting in a sizable section of his army withdrawing from the field to give chase to the retreating Georgian relief force while the rest turned to face the Georgian army that had sallied out. In this third and final attack they were also successful in forcing the retreat of the Georgian army back to the walls of Tabriz, but were unable to exploit this victory into any further gains in the siege.
In the Battle of the Tabrizi Plains, Ismail has scored a great victory, forcing three enemy armies from the field while the siege camp
just managed to hold on. But at what cost? While the Georgian relief force was in full retreat, the Ottoman force had pulled back to a more defensible position and the walls of Tabriz remained under enemy control, as the scattered nature of his forces prevented him from pursuing either of these. Worse yet, his own side had suffered very heavy losses in his daring offensive gambles, which would certainly harm his ability to wage war in the future. To make matters worse, his siege of the city would have to be put on pause as his men focused on clearing the dead from the field rather than on supplying the sappers and mortars responsible for the siege. To top it all off, a very sheepish-looking Abdal Beg Talish had arrived at the Safavid camp with just a hundred men of what was once a force of two thousand that had been sent to stop the Ottoman advance in the south. Why was
he here?
Iraq
Ottoman forces in the region had fully occupied Safavid-held Mesopotamia, all the way from Mosul to Basra. And then they went further.
Deciding that further war must be made against the Shia menace, the Ottoman armies then crossed into Musha'sha' territory and made war against these Shia militants as well, with little trouble. Though captured Musha'sha' leadership claimed to be sworn enemies of the Shah, their luck ran out when they were questioned on the manner of their true faith. The faithful and fanatic leadership Musha'sha' refused to apologize for their crimes against the tombs of the the Abbasid Caliphs and Sunni Imams in the region, and for this, they were killed.
With their victory complete in the region, the Ottoman forces marched northeast, further into Persia, though this progress was halted by incoming news at the Battle of the Plains of Tabriz. With this, they withdrew from their advance and started a rapid march northward in order to reinforce their army in the region and to make battle against the remnants of the forces of the Shah.
Syria
Although one would not expect Syria of all places to be disturbed by war at this time, this region has also found itself in a state of chaos. Two Emirs claimed to have received the acceptance of the Sultan Korkut for further Mamluk self-governance of the region, have ordered a withdrawal of the instruments and agents of Ottoman bureaucracy from the region. While their claims found support from a number of notable Mamluk nobles in the region, their challenges to Ottoman power were countered by other local Emirs, a minority of Mamluk notables, and, of course, the Ottoman bureaucrats, who made public statements against the two rebellious Emirs and their claims at representing the demands of the region.
Not to be deterred, the Emirs and their supporters responsible demanding further autonomy quickly mustered forces with the intent on pacifying any resistance to their claims. As a result of these forces being raised, other notables in the region have also raised their own forces with the goal of countering this power grab. An appeal for aid has also been sent to the capital to put down these rebellious Emirs.
And, in the midst of all this chaos, the bodies of Venetian merchants have been found on the streets of Beirut. it appears that they were robbed, stripped naked, and then killed. Local authorities are doing what they can to investigate such maters, given the circumstances.
Fall, 1518
Tabriz
The siege of Tabriz continued, with the Georgian forces bottled up inside the city and the Safavids able to just barely to make further progress. Supplies were now starting to dwindle, but the weakened state of the besiegers meant that communication was easier for those within the city. News of a complete Ottoman victory in Iraq had caused spirits to rise, but there also was the worry that the Ottoman army would not arrive in time to provide a secondary relief.
Still, there was some respite from the threat of sappers, mortar shells, and starvation. The true nature of the capture of Baghdad due to the cowardly actions had been revealed to Ismail, and so the besiegers and defenders alike were treated to the
sight of Abdal Beg Talish being dressed in women's clothing and ridden on a donkey through the camp and in front of the walls of the city. But despite the progress made by Ismail in recapturing his great city, it was transpiring that this siege would not be one to recapture it. The main Ottoman army filtered into the region and positioned themselves for an attack on Ismail's much smaller besieging army. It was only under the many protestations of his generals and his solders that Shah Ismail was convinced to take his two victories and not go searching for a third against this Ottoman army, for it was believed, perhaps even by Ismail himself, that he would not see a final success against the Ottoman army. Ismail ordered his scribes to record his retreat as reluctant, and with that, the siege of Tabriz was ended as the Safavid army slipped away before the Ottomans could strike. They once again fled further into Persia, evading pitched battle with the main Ottoman force.
The defenders of Tabriz cheered as the Safavid army fled the field and the Ottoman army replaced them. The Co-Kings and their army had survived.
Armenia and Shirvan
The Georgians under the Prince continued to fall back further and further into Armenia until they were chased no longer. This army then found shelter in Yerevan, where they settled in for the winter.
As for their pursuers, the Qizilbash cavalry who had refused to return to the field of battle and instead charged north in search of plunder and captives, this force had descended into nothing more than a mob of cavalry. It stopped its pursuit of the Georgians and instead set its sights on pilfering the local Christians in this country, perhaps out of revenge for siding with the Georgians, perhaps out of pure search for plunder, or perhaps simply out of the complete collapse of order that had taken root in the Qizilbash forces.
Even with the Shah's two great victories, he continued to suffer a breakdown in command over the nomadic cavalry. While he had slain many infidels and heretics in the field of battle, he had failed in liberating his lands. As the SHah retreated further into Persia, he suffered further desertions and issues of disloyalty.
In Shirvan, Hasan Sultan has suffered further losses and continues to fall back against the victorious forces of Durmish Khan Shamlu.
Syria
After a brief yet bloody campaign, the rebellious Emirs and Mamluks have managed to seize a sizable amount of land in Ottoman Syria and repeat their claims that they have been liberating the region from Ottoman bureaucracy to return to the old ways of Mamluk self-governance. Although the armies of these Emirs has halted their campaign for the winter, their army is rumored to be no less than ten thousand strong, capable of further advances on undefended Ottoman territory, though its troops are thinly spread. However, the brutal nature of their campaign has done them no favors in winning over the local
reaya or even the influential merchant class, which has seen its wealth explode under Ottoman rule. Chaos continues to reign over the region as the Ottoman army appears to be too distracted in the east to form a proper response to this madness.
Also, those Venetian merchants? Not even Venetian. Or merchants, as it turns out. Turns out they were agents of the Knights Hospitaller, who had come to the region in an attempt to hire assassins to kill the Sultan, but they arrived at just a time that the region fell into chaos, and as a result they were robbed and killed.
Something weird's going on over here.

2023.05.29 08:50 Far_Investigator_571 Shortage of competent medical professionals in Townsville
There have been a few close calls where I have nearly died because of the lacking competence in the local medical profession.
News articles in Townsville Bulletin recently highlighted these issues with the recent discharge of a patient who was unwell and later shot by the police.
IRL discussions, people who are Ill are constantly neglected with no outreach eg. Wound care nurses who would otherwise be deployed if we were residents of a larger city.
Complaints are usually internally investigated by the neglecting organisation with zero accountability. Ryans rule seems to be an internal joke.
It's got to a point where I have zero trust in healthcare professionals in Townsville and for those who have done their jobs correctly are often railroaded by those who went rogue.
I want to know what's going on in the medical community, how the culture became so poisonous that competent professionals would rather give Townsville a miss.

2023.05.29 08:44 autotldr Melbourne earthquake 2023: Victoria feels shake of 3.8 magnitude tremor in city’s north-west Melbourne
This is the best tl;dr I could make,
original reduced by 56%. (I'm a bot)
Parts of Melbourne have been shaken by a 3.8 magnitude earthquake that hit the city's north-west late at night, rattling homes and waking up thousands.
Seismology Research Centre chief scientist Adam Pascale said it was the highest magnitude earthquake with an epicentre in metropolitan Melbourne since 1902.
He said damage usually occurs when earthquakes are above four or five in magnitude but this event may have caused some cosmetic or structural issues as it was quite shallow and close to the city.
In the last five years, four other quakes of magnitude three or greater have been recorded in Victoria, including a 5.9 magnitude north of Rawson in 2021 which caused some localised damage.
Tonight's earthquake measured in at 3.8, compared to September 2021 when we experienced a magnitude 6.0 earthquake here in Victoria.
VICSES News May 28, 2023 On average, around 100 earthquakes of magnitude three or larger are recorded in Australia each year.
